M'sia Ipoh (3D2N) 2/9/2006 - 4/9/2006

Re: M'sia Ipoh (3D2N) 2/9/2006 - 4/9/2006

hmmm.... i went once for this sort of events.... quite fun if you dont mind the free and easy pace.... but for keen drivers or those used to the impeccable organisational skills of our bmw-sg convoy trips, you might not enjoy these events as much.

the last time i went, i was one of only 2 BMWs... and mine was a cabrio...got harassed by people, and man.... a lot of these participants cant drive for nuts.... the squeeze into your lane, cut you off....all because there is no enforcement of convoy discipline... its to each his own.

IMHO, i dont like it...

SMyuen tells us more. Why do you say no convoy discipline. You mean people dont stick to their pole position and starting line-up grids? kekekeke

What abt the speed limits?

Re: M'sia Ipoh (3D2N) 2/9/2006 - 4/9/2006

ok well here goes... but i must state that this is only my personal experience and I do not know if things have changed... but the last i heard, its still about the same...

first, i didnt join the convoy up cos of work... so i made my way up later... the organisers refused to release the road tulip to me, saying it was "confidential" and will only be given on the morning just before flag off.. i said i couldnt make it for the flag off... but they were kind to give me a simplified road directions.... (the actual tulip is far more detailed)

guess what.... the directions were correct only up to the last part... we got lost in our destination town cos the road directions were wrong!!

well, we pretty enjoyed the stay...it was ok lah... they had some "dinner and dance-like" kind of dinner party for all the participants... which was kind of strange since everyone were strangers!... so it was like..,.hmmm...

i got a rude shock when the return trip started....

no walkies for participants... they used marshal cars to man every checkpoint/turning point... so there was no comms basically.. you just follow whoever is in front and see what happens... to be fair, no one got really lost lah... but i was to used to the proper comms and convoy doctrine of bmw-sg...

it was supposed to be holiday trip.. but clowns chose to show off their driving skills... we nearly got squeezed off the road by a corolla.... a couple of unpleasant characters as well..

convoy leader was non existent... lead car just sped away... leaving the rest to find their own way.. they was no convoy discipline or any form of driving ethics....

and i got ticked off my the boss of the company cos i parked my car along the roadside.... duh? we were in malaysia some ulu town! and i wasnt obstructing traffic! .....best part is... after i shifted my car to park "properly", dozens of other cars parked in the same place i did in haphazard style.... so i presume he just didnt like the sight of a "young looking punk" in his flashy cabrio... hmmm...... oh well...

sorry, but any businessman who ticks off his customer should know he wouldnt get his customer back.......

anyone else has got their experiences to share?

keke

My first experience with WFF was in June. I joined the "Escape The City" event which brought us to club Med Cherating recently. The organiser was WFF and sponsored by PML.

It was good fun and most of the cars went at about 160kmh on some stretches of roads. I must say that the BMW Motorcycle had done a good job in marshalling. Without them, I think, some of the cars could have lost their way, esp in Kuantan.

In all, the whole drive was very much "free-for-all" and you choose your preference of driving. i.e You can choose to speed & meet again at the next stop-point or be remain with the main group who prefer to stick as one group and drives more or less at leisure pace. The latter is I believe "the convoy" which bro SM Yuen referred to, but I'm sure that wasn't intended to be a convoy, but more like travelling together and keeping each other within line-of-sight. That was at least my experience during the Escape the City. When we were at Kuantan heading to Cherating, the organiser arranged for the M'sia traffic police to escort us in a more real-like convoy manner - > the police at the first in the queue, sirens on, all headlights on, on-coming traffic push to roafside, lorries at the front were asked to give way. I guess with the pressence of police everyone refrains from overtaking. anyway, the speed was like 60kmh during the police-led convoy. That was real fun.... all the villagers came out to see what actually happened with all the noises and long queues of big 7s & 5s. hehehehe

You are right. I believe that they do not give out walkie-Talkies to all cars. Anyway, I've already paid up to go for this trip. Hope to see anyone who wish to come along. There is also a couple of BMW drivers who had joined, but I doi not know who they were. If there is any BMW sg event, I more than keen to join. ....mmm ...looks like I have now grown with the interest of going to M'sia after the june event.

Trogen - you are right, i guess its different approaches to driving.. :> i think PML events are still ok.. but i think you may enter some problems when its a public event - cos you get cars and drivers of all sorts... but have a good trip and remember pictures please!!!!

cheers

Trogen, you should have came up to us. There were about 3 cars from the BMW-sg group that was there. I was 1 of them. We were hoping to find others there, but didnt seem any labels on the others cars.

There is a group of us that will go for the malaysia drives.

hi,
Speaking about BMW-sg stickers, it's been 2 years since joining this forum but still haven't got my stickers yet. It's actually my fault as I have not been able to find time for the monthly gathering (u know lah... the typical singaporean men with the committment of driving the family to sunday classes and in-laws place).

BTW, are u guys joining the WFF event for the trip to Ipoh ?
