Need advice - 16" to 18" rim

Measured at tyre shop, stock 16" rim + RFT is about 22.5kg

If I change to 18" rim + non RFT @ about 24kg, will pick-up and overtaking be significantly affected?

I guess performance will be compromised but question is whether it will be very noticeable.

Thks

Re: Need advice - 16" to 18" rim

hey josca,

in this set-up your overall weight increase is but 6 kg. It is negligible (not even the weight of a child) for most car. so it will not really affect the performance...let alone significantly. In fact you will get better grip and handling from the increase in tyre width.

maybe if u get forged rims then overall reduction in weight will be more substaintial. some 19" rims weigh about 9kg only. just my 2 cents...

i m looking around for rims too...good luck...

Thks, you are right that light weight forge rim will better esp if you are going for 19".

Add a child's weight in the cabin is insignificant. However, I was told that adding 6 kg unsprung weight to the wheels plus wider tire of the 18" may slow a 320i. That's why I hoping to get feedback/advice from those who drive 320i and have upgraded from 16" to 18"

I really like yr car. Looks cool. Almost wanted to buy a E92 320i from PI, but finally settled for E90 320i highline last week. Collecting my car from PML this week.

Re: Need advice - 16" to 18" rim

Ok guys, I collected my car yesterday and changed from stock 16" to 18" set up today.

I am pleasantly surprised that pick-up is not affected and seems to be slightly better. My car came with Style 155 and 225/50/16 BS 050 RFT.

The ride is also not hard. In fact, my 17" set up in JDM Accord felt harder. I think E90 has much better suspension.

Bottomline is that this car, BMW 320i can handle 18" set up. The car looks nicer or more complete now :)

Hope this info is useful to those who are thinking of changing the stock set up.

I guess performance will be compromised but question is whether it will be very noticeable.

Not only that, road noise and vibrations (especially on roads that are not smooth) will be magnified by a lot more.

However, what you'd get is better turn-in.

Hi Josca,
I'm a new owner of a 320i too. How's the drive so far with the new rims? I'm lookin for new rims as well but dunno what's good. How much did they cost?

Re: Need advice - 16" to 18" rim

sorry to hijack but nice rims there. looks great.

e90 can go up to 20". performance wise, sure suffer a bit la, but a lot of ppl running 19" still cup corner like nobody's business. lol.

I am enjoying my ride. Main reason for getting this rim is because I like the design. This is replica BMW M193 rim. I can't tell the difference from the original. This rim is heavy, but original is probably also not light.

Got it from Poh Heng, Jtan. Rim is about 1/3 the cost of original. PM you the full cost + trade-in.

Re: Need advice - 16" to 18" rim

Those are beautiful M193 rep rims! Congrats on the purchase! Now please lower the car :)

Re: Need advice - 16" to 18" rim
