Need advice on f10 523i - gearbox problem?

Okay so I bought a 6-yr old 58k mileage f10 523i a month ago

When I test-drove, I felt that the car was abit sluggish especially during initial pick-up (first gear, second gear ish)

When accelerating from 0km/h, not only is it abit sluggish but sometimes the car delay to accelerate and then suddenly accelerate alot, causing jerky reaction

However once pick up speed to about 40km/h and above, ride is smooth

On speed 30km/h or slower, especially when im not pressing on the accelerator pedal, sometimes the car seem to "drag" (slowing down) and sometimes in slightly jerky manner

Does these description could potentially mean the gearbox is faulty or might break down soon? I'm actually quite worried

The reason I proceed to purchase the car because
1. I thought the sluggish throttle was an in-built safety feature and
2. I thought the previous owner might have drove the car in a jerky way, thus the in-built "memory" system make the ride jerky. I thought after driving myself for awhile, it should adjust to my driving style (After driving about 2000+km, results are not conclusive but i do get used to it)
3. The car had sprint booster which when I left on green-mode all the time, increase throttle response so the ride was less sluggish and more responsive. Although Sprint booster can make the ride more jerky but with proper control, everything is good
4. I sent for AAS inspection, diagnostic + test-drive inspection at R2D Workshop and they didn't say anything about gearbox issue

After I purchased the car, I am comfortable with the ride more or less. But recently a workshop test-drive my vehicle and suggest that the jerky movement is not normal.. he suggest me to send to PML to check the gearbox as it's still under dealer' warranty

I contacted PML but from the looks of it I think they charge $180-200 to do a very basic test.. I'm not sure if I want to waste that money for nothing

So what do you guys think I should do?

My options are:
A) Just continue driving, risking gearbox failure in the future and if it is after 6-mth, I cannot claim from dealer
B) Send for PML, with 1-day downtime and $180-200 for them to inspect, not knowing if they are even doing a thorough inspections

Any experiences bro and advice would be great. Thanks!
 
I would suggest you change out the Auto Transmission Fluid for a start. PML will tell you ZF gearbox don’t need ATF replacement but my experience tells me otherwise. Even more so since your car is already 6yo & 58k mileage. Won’t cost you and a leg. And while you’re at it, ask the mechanic to check your Ignition coils and spark plugs.
 
I forgot to mention. When I purchased it the first thing I did was send to a bmw specialist workshop and they replaced the following parts for me

Servicing
Gear oil 8 btl & atf oil filter
Spark plug x6
Brake fluid
Air con filter
Air con recovery
4 Wheel alignment
Front & Rear Shock Absorber + Bump Stops Replacement + top mounts
Air filter

Basically the function is for gear engagement. If your is ZF tranny it will be cheaper to replace the faulty solenoids.
 
Definitely not normal. Take out the sprint booster. If it’s still not smooth, try a throttle body reset. If it’s still not smooth, will suggest going PML or any other BMW workshop to check. Could be transmission software update, ignition coils or solenoids, in this order.

You can try this at no cost.

I stumbled upon a solution to the above, I tried it and the accelerator is much smoother now.

Procedure:

1) hit start button to turn on power - don't start the engine
2) then step on the accelerator down to the floor for 5 sec
3) hit the start button to turn off power
4) then remove foot from accelerator
5) wait for 2 minutes
6) start the engine like normal and try it out

Got replaced at PML at subsidized rate (outside warranty). jerking at slowing down before stopping. that is the tell tale sign. Happened to another Bro at this Forum as well. similar age and mileage.

So PML replaced your gearbox? What was the cost?
 
After warranty, just after 3 years, but at low mileage, they paid 70% I paid 30%. Actually from BMW Germany. That said, they replaced Mechatronics first then whole GB when it did not work. Mine done at Alexandra road. Same percentage as the other Bro at Kampung Arang brch. Hope this helps.
 
Hi bros, thanks for all your helpful replies. I had been too busy with work to work on this problem, hence only can reply now

I have tried to 'reset' the throttle software by doing this

It does solve the 'wierd jerky movement' when starting the engine, and makes the engine much smoother in general. But after a few days, the issue comes back again! This make me believe it is a software issue, not hardware issue!

To summarize, the issue I am facing with my f10 523i engine is:
-weird jerky movement only at engine start, for 10-20 sec,at low speed (<20km/h)
-hesitation (feeling like auto braking) at low speed (<20km/hr)
-general sluggishness when changing gear, but especially at low speed

I did a lot of research online and it seems that this is a known issue with F10 - Smth to do with throttle adaptivenes feature. The issue I face is actually similar as described in this forum thread:

It appears that the likely solution is SIB 12 09 12 or SIB 12 09 11
*UPDATE: After checking, it seems that
1. Only apply to N55 Engine, but mine is N52
2. SG apparently dont provide this patch


I also have one other question: As a completely noob here.. I 'm wondering how exactly do I install "SIB 12 09 12"? If I simply do a Software Update to the latest one, will it automatically include the required patch?

I ask this cause I emailed most of the bmw specialist workshop asking about "SIB 12 09 12" or "SIB 12 09 11", and none of them seem to know what I'm talking about. They only suggest me to do "software update" (this general term, which I doubt include the SIB I am looking for). The quotation I got was $360, for 2 hours.

Any bro can comment? I think I gave up hope of finding a solution

Wow, I was considering the 520i or the 523i and read the issues raised above.

Is the 520i/523i not that much more reliable than the 320i/ E90? I had some nightmares with my E90..

I went to Tony of Codewerkz, apparently the best I could find in terms of BMW software expert

Even he could not fix the tip-in delay

However by maxing the DME settings via a high-level adataption, at least the acceleration is slightly better

I would say right now I'm used to the driving. It's definitely not linear or perfect, and there's still tip-in, but by pressing down the pedal harder and adapting to the car, I guess I can live with it...

I strongly suggest that you test-drive the car before buying. Even for 520 vs 523, test drive both to see what u prefer. Cuz 520 is 4-cylinder but it has turbo, 523 has no turbo
