I have been thinking about this for a while. it is possible to have the oil leak alittle through the exhaust / intake V/v?

i am not sure of this, and correct me if i am wrong, but i believe the n46b20 engine is a cam timing is computer controlled. is it possible that the timing is off or the sensor is damaged, thus causing a leak once in a while?
so nothing leaks within the engine bay but throwing it out of your exhausts once in a while.

hows your plugs? the only way to really tell is probably a top overhaul.
hi bro,
Thanks for your advice.
Yes, it's possible to leak a little through the exhaust, but I think Rod has exclude this possibility. but nonetheless, I'll recheck again soon, seems to have some black colour stuff at my pipe recently....

My engine is N42, does the cam timing works the same way as N46?

My plugs quite new, did at R2D.

Re: Oil Leak expeneice from 320i

Ah Good, Guru has that part covered. Just that yesterday was idoling watching TV and I had some grand illusions of what happens in an engine that could gobble up oil.
I have a few occasions of sudden small puffs of black smoke. but could not detect if it was from my car or the neighbouring pickup truck, and then i dreamt of this theory .. lol.. hehe..

Sigh. Don't want to say this.
But reading this makes me want to rant a bit.
Bear with me.

PML service center can be bunch of self-serving a*holes.
1st hand frustrating experience...
Several times, over the almost 9 years of ownership.
The service managers are pathetic in their client management.
It's all about lip-service. And goodness what actually goes on in the workshop.

E.g. Historical incident. Once after servicing.
Airbag warning light comes on.
We return the car to them right away.
PML immediately blames us - the owner: for vacuuming the car, saying it tripped the sensor.

By chance, there's a little card in the back seat from PML.
Stating they vacuumed the car post servicing as a "courtesy".

Seeing hard evidence.
They quickly switch their stance.
And blame something else for the Airbag warning.
Eventually try to settle for waiver of labour - charging us for parts.

We were exasperated to say the least.
Poor client accountability - self interest is primary concern.
Sometimes Piss-poor knowledge of their own cars.

Seriously, you would think that they would have some respect in the job they did.
But it appears they perform at the lowest common denominator.
To be fair, I'm sure there might be some good exceptions.
But I'm afraid my/my family's experience hasn't been quite so pleasant.

Please bring your car to R2D (Bukit Batok St 23) or BVO (Sin Ming opp. Ubin Seafood)
Find Rod or Ah Wee for a 2nd opinion.
Hi all i just wanted to share my very frustratiung experience with all bros. If you check the history of this thread you will note i first had major oil leak on 23 Jan 09. PML charged me SGD2,700/- to fix what they said was a gasket leak.

In between then and now (Dec 09) barely 11 mnths later i also had a failure of aircon compressor (another SGD1,700).

Now I again see very low oil levels and i got the BMW service mechanic (24 hr) to inspect vehicle. They say there is a leak and I sent the car to PML saying this should be covered by repair warranty. PML's reply was that this was a new leak. More money. I reluctantly agreed, i had no choice. It took them 1.5 days to do the job and when i collected the car i noted they also did alot of other work.

I did not question them. Afterall this was PML, i thought, and they would not rip us off like some outside mechanic. I checked the oil level BEFORE i drove the car back and it showed at least 75% oil level. So I was quite happy. Less then 20 mins into the drive i checked again and the oil level had dropped by 50% back to approx 25% level. It was still ok to drive but the oil level was very low.

I called the 24hr BM service mechnic again and he said there was oil leak. In fact he showed me the SAME LEAK that was identified by the 1st mecahnic. THE PML PEOPLE DID NOT EVEN FIX THE ORIGINAL LEAK. Now I wonder what the fuck were they doing to the car for 1.5 days? What were they charging me for? WTF man!!! I was damm pissed off

I talked to the CSO and he insisted the leak was fixed. I told him his owm PML mechanic confirmed leak was still present. They reluctantly agreed to come pick up the car. Supposed to come at 10.30am, did not come at all. I called again and finally their man came at 5PM to get car. It took another 1 day to repair.

In the interim i reviewed their service log and noted they changed and charged for lots of stuff that was not related to the problem. They claim to replace a "Gearg Box Sleeve" that was damaged (SGD289). I assumed this referred to the leather covering encasing the gear but i know they did not change this. They also charged for fixing steering wheel "oil leak". (SGD400 over). Then they charged me SGD120 for polish when there is a SGD100 promotion for this.

Upon getting the car back (and the guy was over 2 hrs later delivering), i was partially pacified as i noted oil leak appeared fixed. I closely monitored the oil levels which stayed above 75% level for 2 days so i think it was ok. BUT THERE IS NOW A STRANGE SOUND FROM FORWARD WHEELS WHEN THE CAR GOES OVER SPEED BUMPS. This was not there before.

I am bringing the car back again to them to complain.....i am sooooo disappointed with the kind of servivce. Its clear this was a 1/2 past 6 job just because i drive a miserly 320i and not a 740.....

This is the last time i take my car to PML and the last time i will participate in any of their events. I am one frustrated and diappointed customer. My next car will definitely not be a BMW. My dad's 5 year old TOYOTA PICNIC is so much fewer problems by comparision.

Any advise from the brothers will also be much much appreciated. Thanks

Re: Oil Leak expeneice from 320i

luckily i did not pay for my air con compressor replacment and worn out pulleys as it is only 18 months old. but problem still exist, aka primary complain of noise from aircon when i start car early in the morning. my guess is they are sometimes clueless as to what is the actual problem and thus, juz fix watever they tink is not right.

Re: Oil Leak expeneice from 320i

dun think the car is under warranty. no way u need to pay if its under warranty unless self inflicted.

terrible to hear your trials.
but don't let it deter you from bmw ownership.
plenty of happy bmw owners.
they just find the right workshop to take care of their car's issues.

if you read my initial posting.
i'm surprised you even went back to PML
After they strung you along so many times.

If it's under warranty, you shouldn't be paying anything for these issues.

If it's not under warranty.
You should be seeking other reliable workshops to get your issues sorted.

No, they don't pay me to advertise for them.
But all good things should be shared.

I'd personally vouch for Rod @ R2D cos he's trouble shot alot of my car's issues.
And more often than not solved it.
It helps that he drives an E46 & knows it inside out.

Other workshops. I'll let the others chime in.

Re: Oil Leak expeneice from 320i

I'll vouch for Rod as well. I started going to him after my warranty expired. He takes good care of my E90 320i and he really knows his stuff.

Re: Oil Leak expeneice from 320i

New car owner here, so car still under warranty by PML. How do I know whether PML will cover the failure under warranty? *touch wood* if I have a part failure, I go down to PML to have it assess, if died died not under warranty, so I just drive off (if still can) or tow off to outside workshop instead? wont iot be obvious to PML that I have done work outside and affect future warranty claim, and still hv to pay PML for assessment report? Or the other way round, go outside shop first?

Thanxs

if under warranty then send in to PML to asses. normally things like compressor, should be under warranty. if they don't want to honor, then no choice go outside lor... then any part under that that you repaired outside can be voided of its warranty.
yah lor, need to pay for the assessment report.

Basically it boils down to how much value the warranty is worth to you. it a heads i win, tails you lose situation.

I second this.... i have left rod with something in my car to fix to think about ..he thinks rationally where problems can arise, and theorise the possibilities, not like some workshop anywhow just "gasak butak"

not sure then better dont mix.... for all you know they use mineral oil...
just for your next servicing do it outside if it is no more under warranty, then you know what oil you are using.

Re: Oil Leak expeneice from 320i

oil gasket leak at the exhaust manifold is a common fault of the N46 block.

Same thing happened to my previous ride
