Hi James,

When does the "jerk" usually occur?, during pick-up or stopping?

Sikander, what's the issues with your car? You have to amplify for us to help you.

Benlopan,

For me, the jerk occurs before the car comes to a full stop, i.e. dropping gear down from 2 to 1. The jerk will cause the car to lurch forward.

Re: One issue after another...

I have tis issue too but is intermitten. It does not happen all the time.

What do you think is the "cause"?

Re: One issue after another...

I had this problem few months back, out of about 10 stops, will experience 1 to 2 jerks during downswift of gear from 2 to 1 just before stopping. I did a ATF change at R2D. Follow by a about 80km of driving headed North the following day at speed of about averagely 140km/hr. Then realise the jerk is totally gone, not even once till todate.
There is a thread somewhere which many contribute to this issue, like change soleniod valves, don't know what megatronics la, reset adaptation la, reflash software la and the worst, change whole gear box :wtf:. So, try the cheapest method of all, change ATF which is the cheapest, however many say it does not help but it works for my case.

Hi expert bros in this forum, not sure if any of you experienced this issue. Here goes, I changed engine oil for my e60 at ard 75k. Then at ard 78k, engine oil low warning came up and I promptly topped up with 1L BMW castrol from PML. Now with mileage at ard 80k, the same warning chimes again. Is this top up interval normal? My ride was registered in 2007. Appreciate all advice.

Cheers,
Ben

Re: One issue after another...

absolutely doesn't sounds right to top up oil every 2k-3k milleage
bring in to workshop to check. i'm afraid the gasket/seal/etc is leaking

For me, it was more often than intermittent. Out of 10 stops, 7 jerks.. usually before the car stops, u can "Feel" the power the car is gathering when lowering gear from 2 to 1. For me, after 4 attempts by (Khangs Auto), they isolated to 2 of my solenoids. Got it changed and all is good now. Gear shift is super smooth, both up and down gears. My mileage is now 83k. They bad thing is I used 1.5 mths to sort out the problem....

It happened to me before but mine is under warranty. Story: after top up, indicator showed low. Top up another litre. Still showed low. Top up another litter. Still showed low. Total top up 3 litre liao. So I panic! Went to pml Alexandra. Attended by a small built chap (shall not disclose his name), he checked and say maybe sensor spoil and want me to leave my car for 3 days. I gave him 4 days but problem still persist. Went back another week with evidence of oil leak. He checked, conclude I making a fuss. I banged table. Spoke to another SA. He checked n promised solution. Again needed me toleave car for 3 days. I gave him 4 days. After that he say changed gasket, sensor, oil seal etc. Now no problem liao.

Hi James,

So what are solenoids and the damage like?

A transmission control unit or TCU is a device that controls modern electronic automatic transmissions. A TCU generally uses sensors from the vehicle as well as data provided by the Engine Control Unit to calculate how and when to change gears in the vehicle for optimum performance, fuel economy and shift quality.

There are a few types of Solenoids in the gearbox, e.g. (1) Shift solenoids - automatic transmissions have electrical solenoids which are activated to change gears. (2) Pressure Control Solenoids - Newer automatic transmission designs often use many pressure control solenoids, and sometimes allow the shift solenoids themselves to provide precise pressure control during shifts by ramping the solenoid on and off. The shift pressure affects the shift quality (too high a pressure will result in rough shifting; too low a pressure will cause the clutches to overheat) and shift speed. (3) Torque converter clutch solenoids - Once fully locked, the torque converter no longer applies torque multiplication and will spin at the same speed as the engine. This provides a major increase in fuel economy.

Based on arguments, its should be the Pressure Control Solenoids and Shift Solenoids having the issues. The damage is about $3k and take hell alot of time cause (1) Isolate which solenoidare having issues (2) Wait for shipment (3) Replace and test.

Hoped I did help answer your question.

James

Thanks bro wt, I fear as much too. Any bros encountered this issue and how was prognosis and the resolution? Any way that outside workshop can diagnose the root cause without total access to the ecu as PML does? All help is much appreciated.

Ben

Due to the high temperature, it was mentioned that for every 5km to 8km, about 1 liter of Engine oil will "evaporate" or burnt.. If yours is so rampant, there should be leakage somewhere. Another option I heard is to use thicker engine oil instead of the usuall fully synthetic 5W 40, some recommended 5W 50.

Hi Ben,
Yes my previous e46 needs toP up every 1-2k km. Ur 2-3k km top is definitely unusual, and like what wt_know said, just bring to any workshop and they can diagnose for u. I seriously doubt total access to ECU is required; even if needed, the workshop should be able to handle it with their equipment. I'm no expert so I won't know what actually is wrong, but most cases it's some gasket or piping leakage due to old age.
I did mine at R2D in Bt Batok. Other workshops include J4C, Boss and BVO at Sin Ming. All contacts available in Sponsors' page. Good luck and do feedback to us after everything is settled so we can all learn from it. Cheers.
