please tell me it is not a gear box problem

hey guys,

ok so here's the situation that im facing with my e90 now.

When the car is travelling at a low speed of maybe 30-40km/h, just before it engages into the next gear (not sure from 1st to 2nd gear or 2nd to 3rd gear) the rpm drops followed by a jerk and then picks up on the next gear again.

I have been told that most e90s face gear box problem when it hits around 110k on mileage and im on 105k now. Im not sure if my mind is playing tricks on me but it seems like the car is losing power as well. like some form of resistance when driving. Just changed the battery so you think it has somehow contributed to any of these problems?

If anyone has been faced with a similar situation or has any inputs, please share. It will be much appreciated.

Thanks!

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

symptoms seems to be gearbox issue from what i've read from other postings.

what grade petrol are you using? i've been using 95 for quite some time and car feels sluggish until i switched over to 98.

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

If you feel a jerk forward when you come to a stop, that's probably it!

It is difficult to ascertain whether your gearbox is having a problem, but just to check, have you did a change of ATF before?

Also, it would be best you could send it to a bmw specialist workshop to have them give your gearbox the once over to see whether there is any issue. I sent mine to BVO, Ah Wee to check just recently as I encounter jerks during gear changes and I only had to change my ATF and now is smooth like butter again. BUT my gearbox was replaced under warranty in 2010 at approx. 80,000km.

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

sorry, unfamiliar with that word.

Mind sharing what it is and what it does? also the cost of changing it.

thanks.

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

If you never encounter the gear box "red rambutan" sign, it's still ok.

Can try an ATF fluid change and reprogramming.

But the symptoms is typical for e90 gearbox

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

delrosa,

guess what. all these problems only surfaced after i send the car to ah wee at BVO and had a few things changed. no offense to ah wee lovers. he's a nice chap. im only hoping this is conincidence.

Havent changed atf.

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

Time to change the solenoid

Yes. Change the soleniod

Listen, you cannot simply change the solenoid. You have to open the gear box and that technically means gearbox overhaul!

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

Hi all,

Sorry TS for hijacking your thread, newbie can't start its own thread..

Is it true that E90 will definitely have gear box issues when it hit approx. 100k mileage..??

Thought of getting my first conti make, E90 08' 323, any advise?

Thanks.

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

Bro, I won't say "definitely" but a high chance you will encounter it.

I would suggest when you test drive the car, make sure you "look out" for jerks when the gears change. Drive it longer because when I test drove my car, I didn't experience the jerk but when I collected the car and drove longer, or when the car warmed up, the jerk was obvious. Even now, when the car is parked for a while and I drive it, there is not much jerk. But after a while, the jerk can be felt.

So please be aware of this when you test drive. Or factor that into your price nego.

Thanks bro redline for your advise.

So did you change your gear box, how deep would it burn our pockets to get it repaired?

Thanks.

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

It doesn't involve changing the gearbox but replacing 7 solenoids in the valve body. That will cost about $2K.

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

Thanks again for the valuable info.

Was staying away from Audi & VW due to their infamous DSG issue, especially the 7DSG..

Seems like we can't escape GB issues on conti cars..

Most probably will bring it to BVO to check out the car before confirming.

Hope to drive a conti ride soon, cheers.

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

Yes, bring it to one of the site sponsors workshop to advise. If the dealer don't allow, then walk away. Be safe than sorry after your purchase.

I'm speaking from recent experience.

But don't let it deter you from getting a conti car if you like it. Crossing over from a Jap car, the ride is totally different. And the engine... well what can i say ;)

BTW, what tipped me over to BMW instead of VW or Audi is the high paper value....

Cheers!!!

Try changing the ATF fluid first

Is that right? I thought BMW has the lowest.
