weight savings should be one of the main reasons. also it should be cheaper to make plastic parts compared to metal. Moreover with our hot climate, rubber seals will harden and crack faster. Also, the transmission/gearbox is not made by BMW but actually sourced from other manufacturers. One article i read kinda mentioned that "lifetime" ATF does not mean never need to be changed but is more of referring to the lifetime of the transmission/gearbox or how long the transmission can last.
