please tell me it is not a gear box problem

Bimmers feel solid and drive like a "tank", yet the factory used some many plastic / rubber gasket parts that they know from the start , the parts will not last 10 years? Hmm... only reason i can think of is perhaps for weight savings :huhhuh:

weight savings should be one of the main reasons. also it should be cheaper to make plastic parts compared to metal. Moreover with our hot climate, rubber seals will harden and crack faster. Also, the transmission/gearbox is not made by BMW but actually sourced from other manufacturers. One article i read kinda mentioned that "lifetime" ATF does not mean never need to be changed but is more of referring to the lifetime of the transmission/gearbox or how long the transmission can last.

i think bmw's previous omv were way higher than VW and AUDI or even mercs. just the e90 320i was around 40-44k omv. mercs and audis were 35-38k range i think

My 06 320i OMV is $41.9k+

Did you hear it from people who coincidentally have issues? There are lemons in every make. My DSG served me well although my manifold cracked and guessed what, VW changed everything, no questions asked.

I believe you visit VAGSG too, tons of comments on the 7 DSG.

Would have gotten myself the new Jetta if not for all those kind soul from VAGSG.

Just my 2 cents.

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

On my E90 323i, when the gearbox started getting lumpy/jerky, I brought it back to the agent (under warranty still) and they "re-programmed" the gearbox. Was better after that. Could be one possibility, but I would presume changing the ATF fluid could also help.

My gearbox mileage was only about 50+k km though...

when you mentioned agent, are you referring to PML or another workshop? cos SA at PML did not want to do it for me and I ended up doing it myself.

gear shifts is much smoother without the jerks after resetting the transmission adaptation values.

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

actually it is not correct to use 100k milage
Most cars after 100k will start giving problems and needs
changing of parts
It very much depends on how well the car has been taken care of
by previous owners
Amount of wear & tear, upgrading, driving habits, etc.
Best bet is send to STA for an assessment before you confirm
the sale.
Good luck ( that is also very important)

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

when u scrap your car, the body could be exported and is worth
another S$2k to S$3k

Yup, thats the reason why i'm eyeing a beemer, it's paper value for 06'-08' is one of the highest for standard makes.

If got to scrap the car, at least dun lugi so much. VW jetta at less than $28k while Passat is in the range of $30k nia..

Thanks bro.

I most likely will send the car to STA or one of the forum sponsor workshop to check it out before confirming.

Almost paid a down for a 06' 323, went to test drive the car. Initial drive was fine, sales men suggest i gun the throttle (most likely he regretted asking me to do so) & when i reach high RPMs, there were some 'click, click' sounds which looks like its coming from the engine bay. Not convince, make a U turn & try again, same sound appears again at high RPMs nia. On the way back to dealer shop, realise the car start to judder, initially was mild for about twice. Sales man took back the car & when reversing back to the lot, the whole car feels like vibrating (dunno how to put it) for about 2-3 secs.

Dealer said will send to workshop for inspection & get back. I haven't heard anything after 2 days..

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

Bro, no use sending your car to Vicom or STA.

They do not have indepth knowledge nor the expertise to diagnose bmw specific problems.

Best to bring to bmw specialists like r2d or bvo. They can diagnose and tell you whether it's a good buy or what needs to be fixed.

[/COLOR]Ya, thats what i thought so too.

Most probably will send to specialist workshop, they can help test drive the car too..

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

Remember to call them in advance to book for used car evaluation, then get the dealer drive it over.

Best if you get there before the dealer does.

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

Hi all,

Can anyone advise on this yellow exclamation mark inside a circular gear. I get this every time I press the start button without depressing the brake in the morning. This symbol will go off by itself within 30 seconds.

I will then proceed to start the car and the car will operate with no abnormalities noted.

Can anyone have this same symptom?

Thanks!

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

Get a code reader and get the code ID ... the 3 numbers from the Baby1M's diagram. Easier to know what's going on after that.

Re: please tell me it is not a gear box problem

Thanks all for the advice, the weird part is the car is operating perfectly even when i start the engin with the caution still on. It will goes off 30sec later.

Depressing the brake is a safety feature. So the car is giving you a caution, not an error code per se. Why not just press the brake when starting?

I did try to start and press the brake together, the car will start normally but the caution light will still be displayed and goes off subsequently.

The reason I always press the start button without pressing the brake is because I do not wish to start the car.

As the caution always goes away before I start the car, do you guys think it's related to transmmision? The duration of this caution light varies from 2 to 30 sec normally. Today I waited up to a minute before it goes away. Anyone encounter the same symptom?
