The engine mounts have been changed. These noise came about only recently.
I'm on 98 grade petrol all along (it gives me better fuel mileage).

Chewbaka, have you sent to PML for checks?

For my case, PML attributed it to aging... my mileage is 128K. Said something like "engine old", "cannot handle the load well" so "will have these noise", and to really solve it, do an engine overhaul. Wahlau!! :yikess:

I have sent in once already. Sending in again next tues. if its not the engine mounts, it could be the aircon. Cos whenever my aircon is not on, the vibration isn't that bad.

Re: Rattling noise

When people said stock is best, that definitely doesn't apply to bmws in my opinion. That's why should mod if you get a bimmer so the chances of having such problems will be lesser... Go change coilover, BBK etc and all those irritating noises etc will be gone! I am not joking cos I encountered it.

Bro, my 2006 e90 also has creaks. What i am worried about are the hard knocks sometimes when i go over potholes, Very ouch. But sometimes the suspension quite sturdy and there isnt the knocks. You guys get that also? is this a sign of my suspension dying?
Bro,

I had this similar issue with my e90 2006...noise(like knocking an empty container) going over uneven roads (those heavy duty tiled roads) very prone to hear....absorbers are solid no leaks...the culprit was the absorber mountings...got it changed, and the noise has been eliminated :). But now i have this stupid sound, occasionally come on and goes from engine area,....TAK, TAK, TAK... sounds like a broken belt hitting against something in the engine bay....(but just got my belt/tensioner/idler bearing changed)....workshop can't really troubleshoot as sound is not there when i am at the workshop....real pain. Still unsolved…it's a X-FILES episode.

Also having the vibration issue (Mountings have been replaced, engine mounting and transmission Mounting). Vibrates when A/C is turned off in the morning....and these days even with the A/C on, you can feel and hear the vibration when driving in the morning. Goes away after engine warms up. Was told that this is common with E90....workshop advised me to increase the RPM. Currently RPM at 900rpm with a/c and gear engaged; 800RPM with A/C on on neutral and above 600RPM with A/C turned off. Vibration is gone....but feel that this should not be the way.....seems like a easy way out.....and burning more petrol......Give and take scenario i suppose.....at the end of the day, it seems that you can't have it all.....actually you can....buy new car..... :( but then again COE too high..... then have to keep the car lor.

Cheers.

Re: Rattling noise

I also face the same issue, rattling noise when I start to drive once releasing brake pedal. When accelerate, the sound is gone.
PML told me the sound is frm my exhaust pipe and advice me to do a run in to see if the sound will go away.
Can I ask if anyone experience any tuck tuck sound after driving and have parked ur car?
Thank u

Re: Rattling noise

Anybody knoes if 520i E60 4 pot cylinder engine comes with balance shaft by default or it is a upgradable option? Managed to googled that the new F10 520i comes with double balance shaft to eliminate to cancel out inherent engine cylinder vibrations and hence noise reduction as well. I called up my PML service consultant and he refered to his technicians.. apparently they do not even know what is a balance shaft. -___- . Balance shaft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Re: Rattling noise

Apparently pre-facelifted models 318i and 320i comes with balance shaft installed. But I cannot find any information about E60 520i and PML cannot even answer me if 520i has got balance shaft. Service consultant actually commented, " I never hear before what is a balance shaft... I think you got the name wrong, it should be the strut bar":huhhuh:

Anyone encountered these problems before?

1. The engine vibrates strongly during the initial movement of the car with the wheels turned. This happens during parking, whereby you move the car only after turning the wheels in stationary position in order to get into/out of the parking lots. The vibration goes off once the wheels are gradually straightened.

2. Engine vibration noise (sounded like pounding type) when the car comes to a stop (i.e "D" gear with brakes on). The noise is also present when the gear is in "R" position, but the noise goes off when the gear is set to "P" or "N". Noise will also go away when the air-con is switched off.

3. Intermittent clicking noise within the dashboard (front passenger side) when the car passes through uneven roads, angled humps, etc. The noise sounded like a plastic part has gone loose.

What could be the cause of the above problems?

I posted the similar problem i faced with my 320i in another thread. Copy and paste here...
My car is experiencing similar noise when at idle, steering turning left/right, reversing and parking. RPM is normal. Noise happens whether A/C is turned on/off.

PML say it's due to engine mounting.

MA say it's due to belt/tensioner/idler bearings.

Anyone found any solution and pls let me know the cost to repair. Thanks. I just do not want to run around PML/MA/outside workshop unless someone has found a solution. Many thanks.

Re: Rattling noise

Hi MohanKLS,

Have you fixed that rattling noise from within the dashboard area? Hope to get some info from you as I'm experiencing the same.... Thanks

Re: Rattling noise

Hi Montblanc,

Yup i kida managed to rectify the noise.

Basically, it was coming from the centre light area (where you can switch on the reading lights etc) instead of either the driver and/or passenger sides wihxh were the initials 'accused' parties..

Is yours a convertible? mine was a converitble so apparently, it is 'normal' for the centre area to be sort of loosened up after the top panel slams shut whenever you put the roof down & up again.

So what i got the folks at PML to do was to insulate that area to the max...& voila.. it was fixed "))

Hope this helps dude...

Cheers

Re: Rattling noise

I've my fair share of rattles. This is how it was resolved:

1) window rattles (tik, tik, tik): apply teflon tape around window frame all round to insulate glass panel against the frame.

2) passenger seat: happens when seat is empty but goes away when a tall person sits on it. I attribute it to the seat belt slot holder rubbing against the leather seat at some angle. I simply pull a felt sleeve jacket, which I bought from a handphone accessories shop, over the holder to insulate. You can also use a cotton sock.

3) engine bay rattling (tsk, tsk, tsk): This is attributed to a broken tensioner bolt causing a pulley to wobble. Replaced screw and readjusted belt and sound was gone.

4) Taxi sound: Sounds like the diesel engine tsk tsk tsk but louder. A local workshop said it is due to the alternator bearing becoming worn after 4 years. Replacement cost $$$ so shall wait and see.
