Has anyone tried ordering from a USA dealer? Having stayed in the US for 8 years and having owned a few BMWs there, I know that you can spec out your own BMW and perhaps even build a right hand drive car?? They also have a european delivery programme where you can take delivery of the car in europe, drive it for a couple weeks and then have it delivered to the US. USA car prices are the lowest in the world. On top of that, USA dealers always give a discount. They have the MSRP (dealer recommended selling price) and the Invoice Price (what the car would cost them supposedly). If the volume is big enough, a dealer might even sell you the car at invoice just to meet their target sales volume. For eg, a 335i Coupe invoice price is only about USD39,240 which translates to OMV SGD54,936 with no options.

source: Edmunds.com - 2010 BMW 3 Series Car Pricing Guide

the total car price would then be 54,935 * 2.4 (incl all taxes, freight and insurance) and would come up to $131,846 on the SG roads.

I'm interested to come on board too for self importation.. pls add me to the list.

Don't even think about it. They don't entertain RHD enquiries. Its better you direct your focus and attention to UK or RHD countries.

How about directly from Germany?

I have tried that. They don't entertain RHD export for an individual. That is, only big distributors like PML will get their attention.

Re: Self Importation - Advice / Join me

Congrats Sunboy 77. I think you might have paved a visible path to do this for the rest of us. But i dont understand this caveat - " I will ask you to sign a disclaimer to confirm that we have advised you that the vehicle is not recommended for use outside the EU ". Does this means that the car will not come with the International Warrany of 2 years? Because according to the BMW Parklane website, export sales do come with Worldwide International warranty and support via the global BMW Dealer Network. Please enlighten us if you will.

Thank You.

SunnyBoy, here's my humble opinion. For your self-import, you want to be very careful on options. Remember every item you tick is taxed at 227%. So before you check, ask yourself if you need it, or if you can get them separately in Singapore.

I would reconsider the following:

V Spoke Style 188 8/8.5Jx17: Get them here?

Chrome Line exterior: Do them here?

Floor mats, velour: Dude, buy separately.

First Aid Kit & Triangle: Should be included FOC, if not buy separately.

Rear-view mirror, auto dimming: depends on price.

Elec Fr Seats + Driver Memory: I spec'ed my Boxster without, and never missed it.

Headlight wash: Don't need it in tropical climate

Rain sensor with auto. headlight activation: I find BMW auto sensor too aggressive. Never used it in my E90.

Xenon headlights: This is a very expensive option. Do you really need it? Normal ones are bright enough. Many forummers would disagree, but I find Xenon lights dangerous to fellow motorists. Can't tell you the number of times I have been blinded by cars (esp. SUV) with Xenon lights...

Cruise control with brake function: do you drive up to MY a lot? If not, your foot is fine.

Extended Interior Light Package: Unless you are hosting romantic parties at the back of your car, not sure if the light package will add anything to your enjoyment.

TV function: Again, an expensive option. You really need to watch TV in a car? If it is for your little kids, then get an aftermarket, detachable one and put it your seat headrest.

Navigation-system Professional: Again an expensive option. Personally, I will never buy built in navigation. One they are over priced. Two, they will never be as updated or advanced as standalone units. Three, updates alone will cost you price of a few new units. Four, you can't put it in another car!

BMW ConnectedDrive-Assist
BMW ConnectedDrive-Online
What are they? Are they like On-Star in US? If so, is the service available in Singapore? Don't think so.

Voice Control
Bluetooth phone prep + telematics
I personally have no need for the above, but you may...

DAB digital radio: dont' think there's is DAB station in Singapore... or any worth listening to

CD changer preparation: My CDs in my E90 CD changer hasn't been changed in over a year. Limited use especially with aux-in line for your ipod/phone.

M Sport suspension: do in SIngapore?

Headlining, Anthracite: do in Singapore?

On the other hand, you might want to consider upgrading the sound system in your car -- standard issues are very mediocre. For you can decide if you want the factory option, or you want to ICE it up in Singapore.

Re: Self Importation - Advice / Join me

i don't know anything about importing cars..but i recently found someone who works in UK who knows how to import cars in..heres what he said.

We are freight forwarders who concentrate on the job of moving the cars, principally by airfreight. The price varies according to size and weight so that a Gallardo is cheaper to airfreight than say a Bentley. And the cost of collection depends on distance from Manchester. But we can airfreight a Lamborghini from most parts of UK to arrival Singapore airport for around GBP 3500.00....some less, some more.
I don't source cars, but I have lots of contacts who do. And we do have good contacts within the Lamborghini franchisees in the UK who are enthusiastic about making a deal on export cars if someone wants the best cars. I can arrange customs clearance in Singapore, but you have to take care of payment of any duties/taxes and registration. If someone wants a specific car let me have the spec and I can put them in touch with some of my contacts.

Mike

not sure if that helps..but if anyone is interested..i can get u in contact with this guy..he imported a Maserati GTS and some other cars into sg before...alot of cars import to HK too.

Re: Self Importation - Advice / Join me

S$5k should give you top notch freight service into singapore plus port clearance if u use a reputable company here with experience in more expensive cars. no need to pay up to 3.5k pounds.

Re: Self Importation - Advice / Join me

Racebred do you mean 5k for Airfrieght? that sounds pretty good to me...

DriveAllDay.

Most of this is pretty good, sound advice..
Even applies for Singapore.
most of additional factory options tend to be overpriced, with minimal value add.
Some exceptions of course.

+1 for your import posts make for pretty good reading.
Back pocket stuff, that I might consider using someday...

Wow bro thanks so much for your detailed analysis!

Yup agreed that there are some things like the carmats and the M suspension I wanted to take out. But really frustrating that some of such options are standard items and cannot be removed... :(

By the way, I was kind of puzzled that Active Steering comes as an optional and not standard item. Is it important to have it?

Hi Sunnyboy

I have no experience with Active Steering, so can't comment. I am sure many forummers hear have that option and can advise you accordingly. From little I know, the experience is quite mixed.

Sea freight takes 3 weeks. Fast enough for me.

It should cost you

Re: Self Importation - Advice / Join me

Hi all

Interesting post.

I will just like to know at which point of this self importing journey can we apply for car financing from our local companies?

Do we pay in cash all the way till the car gets here?

Tks!
