While I know BMW already has quite good insulation, this ultimately wear out over time so I am just curious whether anyone has done additional sound insulation recently, such as 3M Thinsulate or Dynamat etc...

Yes when I played with ICE, dynamat or recently
If u fear the weight increase, start with single layer on front doors first, drive see can accept , then double layer front door, then floor bed etc.....
Call Soundwerkz at 64758588 look for Kelvin.
He may end up telling u "BMW no need put la"

Yah, heat and moisture and hardening of the compound (wool or dunno what)...

Re: Sound Insulation

ohhhh ... was thinking it never degrades

Re: Sound Insulation

Last time I tia the E60 doors, I saw the insulation is very thin only and flimsy liao after 4yrs. Tats why ur doors will now close with a louder or hollower clunk sound instead of when new its a thud sound

owner tua jiak.... gently close door = regular people slamming door....

Re: Sound Insulation

i ownself redid my old E36 doors with sound-damping mat and acoustic foam.
doors close sibei solid thud but heavy.
try to do the wheel arch ones, that will be more prominent with higher mileage

just to share...

i tried something else on my old e36 ride... autofoam... filled up all the hollow bits in the chassis (floor, firewall, abc pillars, boot, etc.) that would create "sound resonance" or something like that... very light material...

but if you are heavy into ice, well, what the fellow sifus have feedback so far will work wonders... but this stuff is quite heavy and depending on how hard core you are... heard one of the most effective systems are from a brand called stp (a variety of materials to suit your requirements AND budget).

i installed sound deadening material on my jap mpv ride's roof and when it rains, it does not sound like a milo tin anymore...

"to each his own" i guess...

silly question
do wheel arch insulation "work" to reduce road noise?

Yes, no 1 is front door, then no 2 is wheel arch
But if your car is born noisy dun waste money
If newer bmws, not essential

Will help a bit but not totally.
If really want quiet ride, gotta get a Lexus. The sound proofing is very good, not the IS though

Re: Sound Insulation

noted.
for road noise, i guess spend money on good tyres will be better :D
