Sound On Start Up on my 523iLCI

My almost one month old 523LCI occasionally has one fairly audible "clank" sound right after i press the Start button. Even with the door close, i can kinda hear it, let alone with the door open.

Has anyone encountered this problem? A bit disconcerting but i haven't had time to bring it to BMW for a check.

Would be grateful for some ideas to this sound.

I've got a LCI over here, but dont think I've the sound u described.

I'm driving the 523iLCI model too. I have this "sound" too. Sometimes it is quite loud and this is this "jerk" too. Call up PML and they say it is a drive mechanism test everytime when push the start button. It can be loud during cold start in the morning. I just couldnot understand the logic of such. It is like someone knock you from behind, quite disturbing though.

Does any one of you have such experience and what should we do about it?

Please advise

I have a LCI and heard that as well. I think if I'm not wrong, the sound only comes if you release the brake pedal too fast after pressing the start button. Anyway will monitor and see.

hi i drive a 523lci. I do hear the sound however i do not feel the car jerk.

I don't have either the sound or the jerk. But a couple of owners raised this at the 5 Series Customers' Night last month. PML didn't have a ready answer, and said they would follow up with them separately.

You guys might wanna ask PML about this the next time you bring your cars in. They are definitely aware of this issue now. ;)

Bro,

It was just a briefing session organised by PML to tell 5 Series owners more about the features of their cars - performance/safety features, how to operate the iDrive etc. Pretty basic actually, so you didn't miss much.

I saw the event at PML BMW website and registered for it.

Noticed it the very first day when I picked up the car. I believe it is the drive engaging. Will report it and see what PML says on first service. However this does not happen every time. Guess need a more controlled evaluation of this issue now that I see other people have a similar problem :)

My friend is driving a 525Lci and i heard his noise is not when we start the engine but it is when we stop the engine?? It really beats me. Mine 523 is still having this issue whenever i start the engine.

as mentioned that you are sending your ride in for oil change? Can we do it outside?

i did mine 2 BVO at 2000km .It takes only like 20 minutes, but fix an appointment first. i will do the 1st service at 10000km at PML in order to keep warranty intact.

I have the same problem as you guys.

Today, I went for my first service and the CSA told me that it is due to the engine "expansion". PML has feedback this problem to BMW but no solution.

I wonder engine can expan?

If PML have identified this issue as a problem, we would need them to provide all of us an answer rather than giving us all the cock and bull story, first about drive train, gearbox engagment test sound, now about engine expansion and have no idea what next.

Anyway, due for my next servicing, will engage them into this problem of us.

Just sent in my car for oil change, they inform me that there will be a re call for the LCI model in Sep08. They will upgrade the gear box software.

Any update on the issue ? Was there a software upgrade when u do servicing ? my car sound is quite loud at times and there is a jerk....

My fren has just done a software upgrade & clog noise with slight jerk when off ignition was gone.Hope this info helps
