my spare key doesnt work...how? cannot lock or unlock...starting the car is ok though...read this online..wonder if it works?

Definitions: button 1 on the keys is the one closest to the metal part of the key (this is the door open button); button 2 is the middle button (the door close button).

1. Open the car doors using the remote function of your working key.

2. Get in and close (don't lock) all the doors.

3. Put the key in the ignition and switch momentarally to position 1 which is the first position when you turn the key clockwise. This is the accessory position. Don't stay in position 1 longer than 5 seconds; then turn the key back to the off position.

4. Remove the key.

5. On the key transmitter, press and hold button 2. Press and release button 1 three times within 10 seconds while still pressing button 2.

6. release button 2.

7. The system indicates re-programming by locking and immediately unlocking the door locks.

8. If you want to do more remotes, you must do each within 30 seconds of step 7 for the preceeding key. You just need to repeat steps 5 through 7 for each key after the first.

Re: Spare key for e46

Have you been only using the other key for a long time?

There is a rechargeable battery in the key fob that gets recharged whenever it's inserted into the ignition and the engine is running.

You can try using this spare key for the next couple of days and I think this should resolve your problem. You may want to alternate your keys every so often so that the key fob gets charged.

Hi bro, may I know what are the steps described above for? Is it to reset the keys, which means it affect the window tilting angle and driver seat position too?

I have opened the key and the batts are just normal lithium calculator batts.
CR2025 or something. i dont think it gets charged. at least not for my E46. :(

Re: Spare key for e46

u need to so some update on the scripts.

Re: Spare key for e46

How did you guys open the key?
bmw wanted to charge me 400bux to replace my key!

so the batt can be replaced for the key fob (non press start)

Re: Spare key for e46

you will need to slowly cut along the seams of the key. use a Xacto kife and carefully cut it.
BMW had conveniently sealed the key so that you can pay $400 to change a new key when a $2 battery does the trick.

Edit: of course you need some sort of glue to glue it back. cyano aka super glue works well :) but make sure you test it before gluing it back.. duh!

Re: Spare key for e46

If battery replacement fails, then might want to check this shop out Soxxi at 21 Toh Guan Rd East #01-11, Toh Guan Centre. Have never tried them but their web site seems to indicate they do most of the old style BMW keys. Should be cheaper than PML.

They say that they will change batteries for remote keys as well sell the batteries.
