Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

I own a e60 525 n52 6cylinder 2.5L NA 210hp@6500rpm 250Nm@2750rpm 6speed.
I itch to buy a f10 528 n20 4cylinder 2L turbo 241hp@5000rpm 350Nm@1250rpm 8speed.

Why itchy:
Play new toy
Lower road tax
Lower petrol cost
More torque

So I go test drive 528.
My only concern was the drive feel which explains my current 6cyclinder.
I will ignore other comparisons such as interior, exterior, idrive, cos newer generally better.

My first rev: the engine dun sound BMW, slightly disappointed. Abit like those turbo charged taxis, very speedy, but sound like diesel van, ok maybe not that bad, but my raw thoughts.
On the road: very nimble, the mighty torque overtook the heavy chassis. Excellent for city driving.
On the way back: I thought a 5 series should not be like that, I asked for the 535 n55 6cyclinder 3L turbo 306hp@5800rpm 400Nm@1200rpm 8speed.

My first rev: still dun sound BMW, it's my first impression, dun flaunt me. Definitely sound less hollow than the 528, but the difference is max 15%.
On the road: not much diff, the 50Nm more din help much, the 350Nm on the 528 already did the job, but it felt more refined and creamy, again at the most 15%.
On the way back: the 535 was at the most 15% better than 528. I tot the 535 would seal the deal, it did not.

It was clear to me why the f10 did not silence me, not because of the 4 or 6 cylinder, it's the drive of a turbo engine versus the 6 cylinder NA. What was missing: elegance, refinement, spirited drive, silky smooth, creamy, classy, strawberry or whatever.

Yet as I am typing, the looks of the f10 grows on me, makes the e60 dated. Worry if COE hits 120k, I may not lup the $ for a f10. Itchy again.

535i > 528i is only 15% better? hmm, you have just help me make decision a lot easier

Re: Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

Actually to me, if want spirited drive, the 523i in sports mode is plenty good already la.....

You still have a few options for strawberries drive:

1. Could still have last few units of 523i in PML going for a song
2. Some units of 523i or 528i 6 cylinders still with PI. I remember seeing a white 528i at Toh Guan centre a month back.

Re: Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

if is sound u are disAppointed, invest more on after market exhaust.

Re: Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

drive with strawberries scented aircon, instead of blue white logo..you get pink white, limited edition strawberry pink F10 colour, when you press horn or accelerate , the car will fire out strawberries from the front and back.

is that strawberri-ed enough?

Your worry is everyone's worry and hence partly explains for the escalating coe.

Re: Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

Will the F10 6 cylinders eventually be phased out? Afraid that if i get the F10 523i, it will be "dated" soon.

Re: Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

yes, will be phased out. Replaced by 4 pot turbo. Stop next to taxi same sound but lose to taxi when drive off. No value added

Re: Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

it will be dated definitely, but it depends whether u are for 6 cyc anot, if you are for, u will be glad u get the last few 6 cyc NA for 5 series. If it doesnt matter to you, get the latest model will be best to secure better car value.

If drive 4 pot F10, MW will ask u to open bonnet during month end meetup and ask "where is the engine?".
:nehnehhh:

I think 4 pot will have that hideous ticking sound during idling like taxi.

Ok ma.. better FC, lower road tax, cheaper than 535. Just dunno about the reliability of the new engine and dunno will have the HPFP issues.

Road tax difference is $600/annum or $1.6/day.

Based on Ron 98, full tank (70L) = $153.3.
For 523 urban cycle, 70L = 614km or $0.25/km.
For 520 urban cycle, 70L = 843km or $0.18/km
Based on average distance of 1k km/mth, u need to pay $70 more or $2/day more.

The actual diff is not that much le.

Re: Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

no need to justify roadtax or fuel consumption deh
it is all about look (design), new (itchy) and most importantly power 1st on paper and 2nd can overtake sonata taxi on traffc light or not

road tax for 535i 2360/year
road tax for 2 litre, 1194/year.

that is 1166 saving per year.

Re: Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

+1 ... bmw, merc and audi already pushing out thier simi dynamic, simi efficiency in all their model from small to compact to big sedan. sooner or later, 6cyc engine might be only available in really high end high performance model. soon F1 car in 4pot turbo :D
