+1 ... bmw, merc and audi already pushing out thier simi dynamic, simi efficiency in all their model from small to compact to big sedan. sooner or later, 6cyc engine might be only available in really high end high performance model. soon F1 car in 4pot turbo :D
All this effort is being push forward by regulator. It is not manufacturers effort lah.

For F1 to go back to 4 pot turbo is like going back to the 80s. No new effort.

Will the F10 6 cylinders eventually be phased out? Afraid that if i get the F10 523i, it will be "dated" soon.

ya true. surely dated. just hang around n wait for the bmw Z99.

Re: Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

yup pushed by regulator
anyway, faster + better + cheaper ma - swee say says one
and it should be better, betterer and betterest
but is 528i cheaper than 523i? :D

dun buy any car from PI if the car is not in yet. wait till u cry.

4 cylinder on 5 series F10 very hard for people to accept. Perhaps on a 3 series F30 328i... perception and acceptance will be much higher.

Why leh?

2L FI block in F10 528 giving better or worse power delivery vs IL6 NA E60 520?

Re: Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

If you still have the chance to test drive the F10 523, you might be pleasantly surprised by the distinctive smoothness of the 6 cyc NA when mated with the 8 spd.

On top of that, I thought that the new Gb is more efficient than the older 6 spd, as the initial acceleration from standstill (not 0-100) was noticeably better compared to my previous E89 S23i which was 200kg lighter but using the 6spd.

On the other hand, the 535 does sound like a diesel sedan. I'm comparing this with my bro's CLS 350 CDI. Plenty of torque, but engine note is too raw for my liking.

I'd say that all turbocharged engines should be mated with DCT/DSGs in order to harness their low end torque, and to keep the RPM down for added refinement. Perhaps this explains why the 335 DCT drives better.

this one i agree. only above 4k rpm does the engine note comes alive

Re: Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

imho... 535d is my top choice... too bad that option is not available.

i am a sucker for torque... and the engine note in BMWs are much more muted compare to other TC cars... i miss the turbo whistle on my ex ride... give u a rush :)

in the end it's a different cup of tea i guess... I will never buy a 523... no kick.. floor the accelerator.. rpm needle shoots up.. but car barely comes alive... don flame me...

I agree. Though the N20 is more than capable of hurtling down a road (apparently, torque is even greater than the outgoing N52B25 it's replacing!), the idea of having nose-bleeds from paying more than a 1/4 of a million bucks for a 4-potter is a big turn off!

I wonder what (if any) base engine is BMW gonna slap in the 6 series @ a later date? Now happy happy, use the V8 & the N55 - but, what engine to fit for the entry level base model a year or two down the line?

As 6 will not be a mass market product, i don't think it will go down to the level of 4 pot.

Re: Test-driven:528 f10 vs 525 e60

There is F10 with NA 3L 6 IL N52B30AK, will it be a strawberry drive?
Also is there powerbox or juicebox or sprintbooster for this engine mated with the 8 speed gb?

Just that historically, many people that bought the 5 series expected refinement. 4 potters doesn't offer that.... even those with twin scroll turbo with big torque numbers.
