PART 1 - TAS-SG, The Overview

DSC04410.jpg:original

Had to pen my thoughts just as i got back from TAS-SG yesterday evening. For the first time ever, TAS has brought it's show overseas (Thailand's is Bangkok International Auto Salon) and i was fortunate to be invited for a short early preview of the show before the doors opened to the public so was able to get in some shots of the cars before the crowds swarmed in.

DSC04416.jpg:original

Consisting of one main hall, it isn't quite as big as the main show in Japan, nor are the cars parked as tightly together might i add. It can pretty much be covered in less than a day, but let's not jump to conclusions just yet.

I'm guessing for petrolheads, one of the main draws are the presence of the Japanese tuner houses which to give the organisers credit, getting them down was probably a hat-trick in itself given the limited market our little island has for them. Although i would have hoped for a more stellar showcase of cars, i won't complain. After all, we have to start somewhere right?

DSC04843.jpg:original

As the other members of the press got in as many shots as possible, i decided to just take in as much as i can while occasionally getting in a photo or two.

One thing i had wished for was for more merchandise from the overseas exhibitors. If you've been to the show in Japan, one of the things to take note of when visiting is to keep a tight watch over your wallet as there are just tonnes and tonnes of goodies to be bought! The only exhibitor which brought along lots of stuff to buy was Vertex, unfortunately, they forgot to bring along a car to showcase. I'm guessing their 2JZ powered BMW is probably busy in the D1 circuit to make this trip. Well, there's always next time.

DSC05305.jpg:original

You can buy a BMW keychain from them though. It looks pretty rad. RE Amemiya also brought along some goodies but their prices reflect their exclusivity.

DSC04417.jpg:original

DSC04436.jpg:original

DSC04463.jpg:original

From cars that made the long boat ride down, we swap over to take a look at those which made the trip from just across the border. It's pretty interesting to see how automotive styling has evolved over the years, from loud and bombastic aerokits to the current stance movement.

DSC04430.jpg:original

Some cars stranger than others, but i do love a couple of retro JDM rides that were present. Especially this brown KE70 Corolla, so clean. Just perfect.

DSC04548.jpg:original

DSC04839.jpg:original

This little carbon wrapped Civic also had my attention for the longest time. I will do a more detailed post of the more notable cars later.

DSC04922.jpg:original

DSC04929.jpg:original

DSC04920.jpg:original

DSC04892.jpg:original

DSC04895.jpg:original

Local retailers also took up some showspace to showcase their latest products, from wheels to carbon sofas!

DSC04835.jpg:original

Last minute prep work just before the official opening time.

DSC04580.jpg:original

DSC04886.jpg:original

Some cars were a little stranger than others.

DSC04522.jpg:original

Military wrapped Ferrari?

DSC04933.jpg:original

With car prices going the way they are, will we end up having to fulfill our automotive desires on a smaller scale?

DSC05885.jpg:original

As the main gates opened and people started coming in, it was obvious not everyone was here for the cars as the moshpit in front of the main stage started filling up AS SOON as the doors opened. I heard some AKB48 fans started Q-ing from 3am the morning before!

Overall, TAS-SG? It's pretty good for a local event. And for those who have never been to the main show in Japan, do give it a visit for a taste of what TAS is all about. It's pretty much a very very "lite", maybe 1/8th version of the main show. It's still fun and can be easily covered in a day or less, with regular performances happenig at various parts of the hall, there's something for everyone, from our regular petrolheads to the not so regular tiko-peks.

For those who have been to the show in Makuhari though, i hope that you'd visit just to garner more support for our local shows. Events like this don't pay for themselves and needs support from people to continue!

We've heard it too many times from people about why aren't there any nice automotive shows locally, here's one.

DSC04867.jpg:original

We love cars too! Give local shows your support or there might just not be any more in the future.

DSC05045.jpg:original

I did have one huge gripe with the crowd though. As expected, there's a crazy frenzy whenever the showgirls come out, just like Japan. But the similarities with Japan stops there. Over there, ppl at least still maintain a sense of civility and politeness even when the crowds surrounding the girls are twice as large, but yesterday, members of the media and myself got shoved, pushed and elbowed out of the way by ppl with gigantic lenses (seriously?). And when you do eventually get bumped INTO, these people shoot you a dirty as it you just caused them to miss a million dollar photo or a hot date with said model!!!

Re: Tokyo Auto Salon Singapore 2013 - Retro Revival

Part 2 - Retro Revival

DSC04430.jpg:original

If there is one thing that's happening all around the World in the automotive circles, it's the return of the retro movement. All over, people are starting to bring back cars from the past and revisiting them with a modern twist.
Cars which used to be part of their owners daily grind back in the late 70s through the 80s are coming back as the children who grew up with these cars are rekindling their sense of nostagia with these machines.

DSC04426.jpg:original

At the Auto Salon, there were 2 retro rides which kept me going back for more. I would even consider them my show favourites. One of them is this KE70 Corolla. Simple, clean, but yet full of little details which just ties everything together.

DSC04484.jpg:original

DSC04480.jpg:original

From the exposed rivets on the carbon wrapped arch flares, to the period correct tuned wheels. I LOVE IT.

DSC04490.jpg:original

DSC04492.jpg:original

DSC04477.jpg:original

DSC04799.jpg:original

Even the interior is nicely done in alcantara wrap.

DSC04494.jpg:original

I'd take a bet that most visitors to the show would probably give this "rolla a miss, but for me, such grassroot cars are what make our automotive world so interesting.

DSC04524.jpg:original

Another contender for the grassroots crown is this first generation Civic hatch. A stock hatch is most likely already a hard car to come across so big props to this owners for bringing this one up a notch.

Fully wrapped with real layers of CF, it might not sound as hardcore as swapping out body panels for panels made with the same exotic materials, but wrapping on such a scale with an authentic CF wrap is still without a doubt a very very expensive exercise.

DSC04881.jpg:original

DSC05317.jpg:original

DSC04883.jpg:original

Another KE70, but this time with a slant towards the Bosozoku side of things. Loving the early Mk.1 SSRs and with all the FET sponsorship decals, yes i checked, there's a Nardi inside!

DSC04417.jpg:original

DSC04419.jpg:original

DSC04425.jpg:original

A slightly more aggressive take on kyusha, this S130 sported a CF overfenders to cover a nice set of vintage TE37s.

DSC04804.jpg:original

DSC04810.jpg:original

Something non-JDM? An interesting take on the ever popular Beetle.

DSC04906.jpg:original

Last but certainly not least in this lineup of all things nostalgic, Tom's E34.

DSC05226.jpg:original

DSC04907.jpg:original

It might look pretty subtle sitting amongst more elaborate showcars but the magic of this car is what lies under the bonnet.

DSC05297.jpg:original

What's the catchphrase again? OH yes, "No replacement for displacement!" V12 Baby!!!

Re: Tokyo Auto Salon Singapore 2013 - Retro Revival

Mock, tks for the detailed write-up. Truly appreciate it!

Re: Tokyo Auto Salon Singapore 2013 - Overview

The KE70 Corolla's rims reminded me of the popular Toyota Starlet :)

Retro !!! Beautiful car..
Thanks for the update

Re: Tokyo Auto Salon Singapore 2013 - Overview

Very nice Retro.

So sad SG will never have this kind of culture for appreciation... double thanks to the mindset of the ruling Elites and COE.

Just like fans appreciate AKB but only one will think of AKM.

I never mention Robot

Part 3 - The JDM Connection I

DSC04656.jpg:original

You can't call an event like this the Tokyo Auto Salon without a fair share of Japanese tuning houses attending right? While some (to be honest, me included) might feel that there just were not enough of these heavyweights having a stronger presence at the show, i do applaud the considerable efforts of the organising team for being able to bring them over in the first place. I'm guessing a whole load of work was involved just to convince these shops to attend the show, so big props to them. Although i wish they brought down more cars or at least their flagships, i guess we have to start somewhere right?

DSC04659.jpg:original

DSC04664.jpg:original

Since this year's show in Makuhari was the year of the 86, let's start things off with a pair of 86's. The first one, courtesy of Top Secret, sports Kei Miura's Rocket Bunny kit but with interestingly smoothened off fenders. A slightly different look from the (if you can call it) regular Rocket Bunny 86s you see on the internets.

DSC04662.jpg:original

The only exposed rivets were on the front bumper.

DSC04661.jpg:original

DSC04681.jpg:original

The rear wing adds a slight change from when the car was presented earlier in the year.

DSC04670.jpg:original

Power wise, we have no idea. But according to sources, it's been boosted with a Greddy Turbo kit and knowing Smokey Nagata, it'll probably be back into the shop for more serious hardware before hits the wangan.

DSC04620.jpg:original

Another 86, but this time from the masters of style at DAMD. It's pretty clear where the inspiration's from on their demo 86.

DSC04864.jpg:original

DSC04628.jpg:original

DSC04410.jpg:original

All in, it's a pretty detailed take on remodelling the 86 after it's much bigger brother, the LFA, they even replicated the tiny opening on the bonnet. I think it's not bad at all, what about you?

DSC04612.jpg:original

One of the stars of the Auto Salon last year, RE Amemiya's Super NA 7. With a very wild reshaping of the FD's body, it's somewhat peculiar why it was given the NA treatment. But as with all Ame-san's creations, it ain't no slouch.

DSC04942.jpg:original

DSC04601.jpg:original

DSC04603.jpg:original

DSC04608.jpg:original

Big turbo power gives way to a screaming NA rotary unit and lightness instead. Some say, it's good for 300 horses.

DSC04589.jpg:original

DSC04583.jpg:original

DSC04653.jpg:original

DSC04650.jpg:original

Don't need much intro of these 2 track regulars. A pair of S2000s from Power House Amuse and Top Fuel. Though interesting, we sort of wish they brought out something more recent instead.

DSC04718.jpg:original

Another RX7, this time from Zesty Racing. Looking very similar to a certain very quick Suzuki Jikou Racing FD, we wonder if it's the same car.

DSC04554.jpg:original

Let's just say, i'm not a fan...

DSC04569.jpg:original

DSC04572.jpg:original

Another oddity, this Fiat 500 had all the looks of a vintage racer. But it's trump card isn't in it's appearance. It's what's under that fat rear hatch.

DSC04577.jpg:original

A peak at the spec sheet reveals a 1000cc Aprilia motorbike engine. Good for 190 horses at just over 12,000 rpm. Best part? Street legal.

DSC04999.jpg:original

DSC05306.jpg:original

A look at some of the goodies Vertex brought along to the show. Perhaps to make up for the lack of a showcar, their 2JZ powered BMW is probably currently busy on the D1 circuit, so we can't really blame them.

DSC04998.jpg:original

DSC05003.jpg:original

They had quite a number of cool stuff to buy as long as you are willing to part with your hard-earned!

Re: Tokyo Auto Salon Singapore 2013 - Overview

Thank yiu for the pictures. The Top Secret 86 looks yummy esp with the FM grinning at you.

Re: Tokyo Auto Salon Singapore 2013 - Overview

Don't you hate it when you're happily taking pictures of the car and then some chicks walks right up in front of your camera?
