Hello ppl! As silly as it sounds from the title, yes, the idea of turbo-charging an E46 318i 4cly 8v with a stock 118hp. However after 13 years, the few horses died. Engine overhauled to give it a new life, thicker gasket to lower compression, turbo coming it's way.

This is what is offered:

1. New K04 turbo (Use in Vw and Audi, but bigger I think, their stock should be k03), internal wastegate.
2. Custom turbo manifold.
3. Custom downpipe.
4. FMIC + custom pipings.
5. Chip tuning.
6. The installer says no need to strengthen engine, cos running low boost 5-8psi (0.5bar). Stock injectors, stock fuel pump, stock everything.
7. Expected output: 170hp.

Cost: $2000nett

Sounds ok?

Feedbacks please....

Re: Turbo-charging E46 M43TUB19

Damn cheap. Hope you find a reliable ws, otherwise cheap now expensive later. Turbo comes with many headaches, heartaches and other aches. This leak that leak everywhere also leak.

Re: Turbo-charging E46 M43TUB19

This turbo shop is quite famous, they done many custom turbo cars. Initially they quoted about $10k!!! (Includes engine rebuild, strengthen, injectors, pumps, bla bla bla....) But after telling them my target is 0.5bar, the price immediately dropped to $2k... They thought I wanted 300hp!!! haha...

turbo from which country?
Not sure leh, but many audi and vw get from them for upgrades..... And runs great!

BTW, I realised I posted in the wrong Section! haha.... pai seh...

You know... Sometimes it's just backside itchy.... most likely will fall back to stock after 1-2 years when problems arises and inspections etc... but still, backside very itchy... $2k for 1-2 yrs of thrill.... I think worth the shot... I drove rex and TDI before, seen many leaks! haha! yeah, lots of headaches, but lots of "fun" troubleshooting...

TD04 is a village bicycle but FTW!

Re: Turbo-charging E46 M43TUB19

Personally I'd say go for it. It's a lot of fun in 2years for 2000$, a good deal for the power gain

Re: Turbo-charging E46 M43TUB19

Agree with Jackmok.
Backside itchy to up turbo for my wrx 2L last time, changed lower block to 2.5 somemore, dmg $7k for ~1.2bar.

Then, initially, only minor hiccups here and there. For a period of about 1 year, no major problems. After, nightmare starts, belt, coolant, simi sai etc etc one by one start to give way.

Still don't learn lesson, supercharged my previous ride.
Same thing.... Ha ha

When car not made for turbo, or whatever "bo", it is tempting but nightmares will follow, worse than horror movies.

2K @ 0.5 bar, sounds too good to be true...
If turns out well, please update us.

Cheers

Re: Turbo-charging E46 M43TUB19

BMW's engines, please check history before doing hardcore mods like these. Have seen tons of E46s staying in garage's ICU for weeks in the haydays mid 2000s. Many bros will tell you to do more research.

Check with BVO for problems sighted.

Re: Turbo-charging E46 M43TUB19

K04 is very common in VW group cars mod
Light pressure turbo charging your M43 block definitely sound good.
But $2000 for this mod sounds too cheap to be true
TS, are the parts new or used?
I suggest you get other ws opinion on this issue.

Re: Turbo-charging E46 M43TUB19

u can turbo anything, 0.5 bar, or 5-6 psi is a safe zone. most impt is the tuner , whether he can tune. What engine management u using? Theres very few choices in the market for BMWs.

Re: Turbo-charging E46 M43TUB19

Too good to be true.
Technically, too cheap to be possible...

Here's why...

This is what is offered:

1. New K04 turbo (Use in Vw and Audi, but bigger I think, their stock should be k03), internal wastegate. A brand new OE K04 Turbo is at SGD$1k. And that's an under-estimate
2. Custom turbo manifold. An aftermarket manifold usually costs within the USD$500 region
3. Custom downpipe. Even if Malaysia Boleh makes one, it'll cost around SGD$300
4. FMIC + custom pipings. Honestly, i dont have to go on right?
5. Chip tuning.
6. The installer says no need to strengthen engine, cos running low boost 5-8psi (0.5bar). Stock injectors, stock fuel pump, stock everything.

Re: Turbo-charging E46 M43TUB19

Not forgetting, LABOR CHARGES?

Most workshops charge around SGD$500 to SGD$800 for a turbo swap. And that's with regards to a turbo car. Meaning Turbo REPLACEMENT/SWAP.

Your car will be an N/A conversion to Turbo project. Which means more time, effort and work required.

How is it possible! No offence, but this workshop non-profit organisation arh? Charity?

Re: Turbo-charging E46 M43TUB19

Wooo.... Thanks for all the feedbacks!

Yup I agree with most of you that there might be lots of nightmares... therefore I WILL proceed with caution...

As for the $2k! I just clarified with ws. That excludes k04 turbo. He say he can get an aftermarket one at about $500-$600. As for ECU, he will chip my ECU, no piggy back, no standalone, no remap. The aftermarket chip has an upgraded fueling and injection setting specifically for my engine, and can be further tune. Chip I am got from Germany, brandless, but recommended, I paid myself, further tuning will be done here locally.

But hor.... in order to solve my itchiness, I tell myself $2k for the ws, other hidden charges is transparent to me!!!:errmm:

Can someone stop me!!!
