Why shouldn't it be the Govt doing something? It is THEIR JOB and they are getting paid friggin good money for it.
If i go to an expensive restaurant and i get serve mediocre food, isn't it within my rights to demand something better or to "complain"? Your view now is that the only solution to this problem is to open my own restaurant instead of getting the head chef to do something about his food which we paid good money for. Not everyone knows how to run a restaurant or cook like a master, but we will sure know it when we get served rotten food.

Some say sgppl only like to make noise on the internets. But where else can Sgreans share their views? on the local papers? on the local news?

I think this restaurant is running well although service needs to be improved. But as citizens (different from patrons because you should have a sense of belonging), we can and should voice our opinions but bashing is another thing. Blaming and pointing fingers aren't any better. Be objective and look at problems for what they are. Weather is bad today, blame FT first. Bus breakdown, blame FT first. Long queue at char kway teow store, blame FT first. Honestly, does this do anyone, any good? We all want Singapore to be a better place and all of us have a duty to make it better.

Please note, I'm not pro govt but I'm pro unity and anti FT bashing.

For those who can afford 2 or more properties to lease to FTs, yes, they have benefited from them whom helped to pay for mortgage or generated extra passive income.
For those who only make ends meet, I cannot see how they have benefited but rather being marginalized.

The economy is not as micro as this.

if our society can do better...then FTs r not needed. fook them indeed. if our population can do manual labour or drive buses...then fook the FTs totally.

im not too much for FT. n i dun think the govt really care two hoot about how singaporeans feel....but my problem is that rather than do better..we choose to go about bashing FTs at every opportunity. no wonder!

Yes we'll definately need them like maids etc. But I just hope we can be more micro, filter, selective on who comes in and do what, how to integrate them.

When theres a "war", people fight differently, its impossible to control how they fight, some rally on streets, some smash windows, some smash their own kind's car. lol really bo bian.

So, points back to the top of the triangle, the gov, needs to do something and be far-sighted, dont be greedy.

Thing is, this is the monster created by the current govt. policies and their handling of immigration issues. We can argue all we want, but this will be the general sentiment on the ground. Unless things change.

Singapore, May 14, 2012 (AFP) - A wealthy Chinese expatriate who crashed his million-dollar Ferrari into a taxi killing himself and two others has sparked outrage in Singapore, where anti-immigrant sentiment is on the rise.

Websites were swamped Monday with postings attacking Chinese and other foreigners in the city-state after it was reported that a 52-year-old local cabbie had died of his injuries following Saturday's pre-dawn accident.

The crash instantly killed the 31-year-old Ferrari driver, Ma Chi, while the taxi passenger, a 41-year-old Japanese woman, died in hospital two hours later, a police spokeswoman told AFP.

Police gave no other details but local media said the Ferrari driver was a financial adviser from Sichuan who was applying for permanent residency and already living in a Singapore penthouse with his family.

Disgruntled locals seized on the incident as another reason to attack the government's immigration policies and the presence of more than a million foreign workers and professionals in the crowded city-state.

Foreigners are blamed for pushing up living costs, straining public transport and stealing jobs, with mainland Chinese bearing the brunt of attacks.

The Straits Times newspaper said the Ferrari was a limited-edition model that Ma had bought for Sg$1.8 million ($1.43 million) for his 30th birthday last year.

Pictures from a video of the accident published in local newspapers showed Ma's car apparently ramming the taxi after he allegedly ran a red light following a night out with friends.

Hundreds of indignant comments were posted online.

"I hate to drag nationality into this tragedy but the stupidity of a single (Chinese) possibly drunkard driver has caused such catastrophic damage to so many people," Tan Wee Meng posted on Facebook.

Singapore's population grew from 4.4 million in 2006 to 5.2 million in 2011, largely the result of a higher intake of immigrants as well as guest workers and professionals.

The accident came two months after a Malaysian cleaner at Singapore's Changi Airport was killed after he was hit by a taxi hijacked by a Chinese guest worker.

The government's more open immigration policy was a hot issue during the general elections in May 2011 in which the ruling People's Action Party garnered an all-time low of 60 percent of the vote.

I agree that they have gone too far and they could prob have done better. But would I have done better by making sure every one in Singapore is responsible for reproducing to replace themselves and to ensure the economy moves, I cannot be too sure.

The problem is that we're a small country and we're reliant on other economies in many aspects. What I'm saying is general sentiment on the ground can be manipulated but if we remain objective and not just blame everyone for everything, then I'm sure problems become easier to tackle. The blaming culture in Singapore is getting out of hand. How many times have you seen people getting out of an accident and start blaming the other party? It's always someone else's fault but never ours.

We have both been jobless and desperate before and I have learnt from very painful experience that the economy does affect me, whether I like it or not. In order to protect my job, I need to think big picture. And FT bashing will not do us any good at all.

Singapore is really too small of a country , nothing to talk about ....

one accident go in front page of news paper , got talked around the net and now debated in the government...

Re: Two killed, 3 injured in Rochor Road accident

Government already admitted some time back that they need to strengthen their AML policies. Yes Singapore is a money laundering paradise.

Re: Two killed, 3 injured in Rochor Road accident

a colleague of mine who came from Australia bght a house here, he was suprised how easy it was for him to bring in cash with no questions. He is from NZ, when he moved to australia, he had lots of explaining to do on the origin of his money.

Re: Two killed, 3 injured in Rochor Road accident

When I was studying overseas, I felt like a second-class citizen. My friends who have migrated, some have lamented on a second class citizen treatment. But some could assimilate.

I have never expected Singapore to "reciprocate" these resentments to foreigners. Sure, perhaps the government is to be blamed.

But the next time you go to BVO, recognise that other than Ah Wee, the rest of the mechanics are FTs. And SWC too. And Leong Seng. And Boss.

And when you run a restaurant, ask yourself if costs/labour pool is a bigger concern on P&L or nationalistic issues. The chefs were all from Malaysia for decades !!!

Re: Two killed, 3 injured in Rochor Road accident

Maybe another way to look at it is this - it's not the foreigners' fault that Government policies led to too many foreigners coming in too fast. You can't blame them for taking the opportunity to have a better life here in Singapore. Of course, there are bad hats amongst them, but there are also bad hats amongst Singaporeans. Being generally hostile towards foreigners isn't the way to solve the problems caused by our own Government, because we'll just face other (potentially more serious) problems if foreigners start to shun Singapore.

Re: Two killed, 3 injured in Rochor Road accident

And certainly, this incident - where lives are lost - should not be used as a platform to champion anti-FT policies......

Re: Two killed, 3 injured in Rochor Road accident

Everyone need everyone in many ways to strike a balance..such as in construction area we see most are foreigners.
