We say we want to slow down

Slow down does not mean lower life quailty. BTW only Norway gives 40 percent of pay for tax. But they are well taken care of. Lots of free health insurance, education , pension , free for giving birth etc. They are paid highly so even with 40 percent tax they are still living comfortably. We say that we pay little tax but we are tax in different things that some people don't know. Car tax and only drive for 10 years. Housing tax, ERP, road tax , insurance. Talk about road tax for BMW it's only few hundred dollars a year as well as insurance. How much are we paying for a housing that are only lease hold. We are actually paying more than 40 percent tax.

agree that low direct tax but high indirect tax. but we have a choice. other countries that apply high direct tax has no choice.

in spore it is possible for multi millionaires to pay lower tax by staying in resale hdb and dont drive. they keep their money in their pocket instead of paying 40% tax.

a $1.5M ferrari is super duper high indirect tax.

a $100M GCB is a super duper high indirect tax.

but GCB can appreciate ... still consider as future investment

the largest 2 ticket item are car and house

No such thing as a perfect system that is fair to everyone on the street. In my opinion, our system works - and I hope that the present government has the balls NOT to sway to populist demands and cave in by giving handouts to all and sundry every time someone cries and writes in to the Shitty Times.

In my opinion, the system we have in in place now gives me the drive to achieve. If I do well, I get rewarded. If I get rewarded, I can then choose the way I wish to spend that reward. It's a powerful motivator - and the reverse is true. If I don't save & keep an eye out for that rainy day, I know I can't expect help from the government - and why should I? The government is not at fault for me buying above my means or not taking care of my health or feasting on McDonalds 24/7 - and ending up with diabetes & complications of high blood pressure. For fcuk's sake, take some responsibility for your own actions, or live with the damn consequences.

The unemployed in Australia gets dole. Sometimes, the dole handout is more than what he'll get if he landed a job. Good for the socialists amongst us, but where's the incentive for that unemployed guy to get off his buttocks and get a job? I certainly wouldn't want 47.5% of my hard earned money feeding some bludger like that!

Sorry if that sounded harsh - but, the way I see it, once we start giving into populist measures, it's only a matter of time before EVERYONE wants a handout. And who's gonna be paying for that then?

a good time to repost what I posted sometime back when everyone was hooting PAP and saying WP's "charity" type policies should be the way...

Re: We say we want to slow down

Don't get me wrong. I am not preaching a dog eat dog world, where only the strongest (or the most cunning) survive. If there's anything the government should change, it should be opening up the opportunities for Singaporeans to find meaningful employment. For every sub-continent "foreign talent banker" that is hired by a similarly sub-continental "foreign talent boss", there MUST be a Singaporean equivalent that, should he be given that opportunity, can do just a good (if not better) job.

The government should seriously rethink about taking over anything and everything that makes money - either by muscling out the competition (e.g. NTUC fairprice putting paid to all the old grocery shops out there) or legislating them out (e.g. taxi licences - you can't own them anymore, you have to rent them). Let the not so smart, not so gifted, not so elite ones find their footing in Singapore, let them make their own way in life legitimately, honestly and with hard-work. Empower them, not disenfranchise them.

I could go on, but GE2016 is still a good 3 years away... and I really don't want the PAP-police to come dig through my hard-disk and find out that I have downloaded Kennaconda's titillating photos of ample-bosomed MILFs for my personal viewing pleasure....

So I better shut up and suck thumb now.

Re: We say we want to slow down

I don't know.

1) for those who's been complaining about not enough jobs, are they asking for the right jobs?
2) for those who's been complaining about not enough pay, are they upgrading their skills?
3) for those who's been complaining about not enough help from government, are they helping themselves first?
4) for those who's been complaining about not enough entitlement, have they contributed any first?
5) for those who's been complaining about not enough excellence in our public services, are they putting 101% when doing national services?

Seriously, it's easy just to look back and expect some big brother/ some help or raise our hands to get attention.

Re: We say we want to slow down

There is a simple way of explaining this phenomenon.

People don't wanna stay near Geylang, but wanna go Geylang.

People KPKB about sleaze of KTVs, but will bring customers there.

People complained about the casinoes, but every now and then, Chinese New Year or funeral, as long as there are more than 2 pax, they gamble.

Contradictions.

Re: We say we want to slow down

Gahmen can only talk about gahmen jobs.

The private sector is 101% dog eat dog.

Some people call it the scarcity mindset. Days of the abundance mindset are over.......

Be prepared to have an even faster after pace of life just to survive. At least twice the pace ......

Oh... Common guys...
We are already slowing down....
Just that we probably won't realise until it is too late.
What's our "real" real GDP growth?
