there probably always have been some amount of death by unnatural means in Singapore. (maybe not as much. only if the authorities release the numbers then we will know for sure.)

last time not so connected, people dun talk about it and know about it in public.
now, facebook, twitter, google+... one person say this. the next thing 10, 100, 1000, 10000 people know about it.

The main stream papers would have to report it, otherwise they would deem to be covering it up.

its like their way of showing their displeasure.
