X5 vs XC90

with family needs in priority, i need to replace one of the family cars with a 7 seater.

not keen on MPVs and thus narrow our choice to X5 (pre-own) and XC90 (new).

like to find out if anyone has any feedback on either, many thanks in advance!

Re: X5 vs XC90

Perhaps you should also consider an Audi Q7? Plenty of them for sale.

Just went and saw a 6 month old X5 alongside a 1 year old Q7 and I think I would go with the Q7

Re: X5 vs XC90

on the subject of MPV vs SUV, recently in Oz I took a SUV on rental.

This is not the first time with an SUV, but the first time with an SUV for a WEEK.

Me and my wife felt that it was really high, and even a little harder than gentle braking will bring about nausea in long term driving, but I guess you do get used to this. It rolled like a pig because of its height and suspension travel, felt a little unsteady in high speed driving, overall it was an unsatisfying experience.

Compared to the little Odyssey I have at home, my wife mentioned NO SUVs FOREVER.

Well, that really depends what SUV you were driving?

If it was a Kia or a Ssangyong or whatever they are called, I can believe it, but not a BMW, Audi, Merc, Volvo etc.

I had an RX300 before my beemer and the handling and road hold was fine, plus you get to see what's happening in front of you.

Re: X5 vs XC90

thanks guys

SB> it must b the same X5 im looking at =]

Cen> pardon my supficiality but really couldnt bring myself to get a MPV =[

Re: X5 vs XC90

Old X5 is 5 seater right? If there is a latest 7 seat X5 on the resale mkt, get it cos it's newer and XC90 i reckon will be replace in 2 yrs time.

As for resale value, it seem Volvo hold better at least for this model, no?

If it's a 7 seater you need, then the X5 will be left wanting or you plan to put people you hate in the last row :lol2:

Hence, we come to the XC90, it plays the part well and if you are not too concerned on driving dynamics, this is the do all, fit all for a family that needs a 7 seater w/o going the MPV route.

Alternatively, there's the Q7 and the Land Rover Discovery 3

Re: X5 vs XC90

agree with ben1, X5 is a 5+2 more than a 7 seater.
Then again XC90, although more comfortable than X5 for last row, is still wanting.
Q7 is huge, but many on the market.... wonder why? Heard that it's grossly underpowered.

For the drive, I haven't driven the current X5 but the old X5 handles like a dream... plus the new
X5 is a new model and residuals will hold.
XC90 about to be replaced and the exterior/interior looks a little dated, plus drive is not as dynamic.

IMHO, wait for X5 4.4TT (400+hp)... that will be the 7 seater from hell

Re: X5 vs XC90

thanks guys

SB> yeah, same one but still viewing them online.

ben1> thanks for the suggestion, will check out the Q7 but aesthetics of the LR doesnt appeal to me =]

DRV> X5 4.4TT is probably the ideal but outta budget =[

sigh, best compromise seems to be XC90

Re: X5 vs XC90

Joydivision,
Just wondering what your others cars are...

Another option are to get a Japanese MPV (spacious and much lower cost) and get something like a used Z4 to keep you all excited on nights / weekends...

Have you test drove the XC90... you like it?
If you're a chronic BMW driver I'm afraid the Volvo's are not quite in the same league in terms of handling and drivetrain. Nothing against Volvo, they are great cars and solidly built... I was looking at the C70 before 'cos for the price it's value for $$.

In fact I remember I test drove the new X5 before when it was launched... almost handles like a 5-series... no kidding. Like no other SUV/SAV I've driven before.

Re: X5 vs XC90

Saw the car online... the one from sgcarmart?

IMHO, what are you waiting for? Hee Hee...
Great savings... looks like the guy added quite a few extras. Yummy.

Now my wife wants it... ha ha ha. She always liked the X5 but it's just the 2 of us so it's overkill ++

DRV>

im driving a E60 while wifes driving a CLK. im no speedy gonzale and am happy with my ride but we need to think about the kids n parents which is why the SUV. no offence to MPV owners but cannot come to terms with its aesthetics n associated image. =[

yeah, the X5 on sgcarmart is quite a stunner isnt it?! gonna check it out over the weekend n maybe we 'll meet?! =]

value for $$ may not be a bad choice under this economic climate afterall

Re: X5 vs XC90

Cool, in that case even if you sell the E60 or CLK (suppose you do), you still have another nice car.
Would go for the SUV/SAV if you like the aesthetics and image... in that case IMHO the X5 trumps all.

Nah, just joking about the X5... I'm not going to check it out. Just got my car... convinced the wife that convertible is equally cool, and has all the space we usually need.

Test drive both the X5 and XC90 and you'll feel the difference.

Re: X5 vs XC90

thanks DRV, will certainly check them out this weekend.

who knows we might just stick to the existing cars if we cant settle on one that makes us truly happy!

if i can hv my way, your ride will cerrtainly take the place of a X5 anytime!

I went for another look at the used Q7 today and saw the X5 being driven off by its new owner. I think it went for $220k.

Re: X5 vs XC90

That's a steal IMHO.... very good price for a damn fine car

Re: X5 vs XC90

thinking seriously about the Q7 huh?!

the new owner of the X5 wasnt me unfortunately cos it was already sold when we visited the showroom on sat =[

Congrats to the new owner on a great car n a sweet deal! it didnt fit our requirement anyhow cos the rear was just too uncomfortable.

anyway, decided to hold off our purchase until we find something that will win over our hearts n minds!

Re: X5 vs XC90

I'm in San Francisco now spending 2 weeks with a Q7.

Impressions are:
1) 3rd row seats are useless. Too upright and no leg room

2) 3.6L engine is quite sluggish, but gear changes are supremely smooth. But it reaches 100MPH easily and cruises effortlessly at that speed.

3) I broke the rear air con vents on the 1st day I got it.

4) Built quality is very good, except the rear vents.

5) Full length dual sunroof is supreme.

6) Boot space is pathetic. Can't even fit 2 large suitcases without folding down the 3rd row seats.

7) Ride is very hard for a people carrier. Passengers complain every time it goes over some rough road.

8) Reverse camera with computer generated guide lines makes berthing this ship a breeze.

Me thinks not worth the money.

Re: X5 vs XC90

why buy a 7seater SUV when u can buy a 7seater MPV of Japanese make at probably half to a almost a third of the price...The thot of 4x4 coupled with high oil price is the major turn off....well, IMO only
