My target at mid cycle is to stay debt free and spend not more than half monthly household income, and pay for luxury items or vacation using investment gains.

I think absolute income level is not an issue, it is what one does with it. My saving rate is highest when I was in NS.

It helps that I am not a fan of Boss and my wife is not a fan of Prada or Gucci. Goldlion shirt/pants and Esprit bag are enough to keep us happy.

The only item I splurge on so far is the bimmer which I would say is worth every cent
