Aircooled Porsches....

Re: Aircooled Porsches....

Thanks! Latest mileage is 1200km. She was smoking a bit and was sent in to Andy for a tuning up. Am now restricted to 6k rpm and the pop corn machine popping is largely gone. Getting closer and closer to being able to run her at full chat.

Also, this finally came in the mail today and will be fitted in the next week or so....

Re: Aircooled Porsches....

Of course, the damn thing costs an absolute bomb. But dont you think it just totally completes the look of the car?

In-car radio specialists Becker have produced a ‘Classic’ Mexico radio that might look old-fashioned from the outside but is packed with modern hi-tech equipment. Behind the 1960s façade lies an ‘infotainment’ system that includes, navigation, telephone, radio and card reader.

The Becker Mexico has a high-quality look with its chrome bezel rings and fine horizontal lines set against piano black lacquer. The 13-colour display hiding behind the retro-look front shows all the required functions and when in ‘radio’ mode a bright red pointer indicates the station.

The working parts are carried over from the Becker ‘Cascade Pro’ model and as such include multi-language functions and a card reader that will take not only a telephone SIM card but also Compact Flash and SD cards for data and music files.

The integrated Bluetooth function will give hands-free calling while the navigation can either be planned at home or office on a PC and downloaded onto a Compact Flash card or made directly on the unit via its own 2GB card that holds navigation data for 34 countries.

Of course the Becker Mexico also plays music to a superlative standard of quality. It can take as a source a remote CD player, an iPod or direct from a Flash card. A graphic equaliser display is available.

The Becker Mexico will be available in Germany from July 2006, at a price of around EURO 1500. For further information please visit www.becker.de.

Re: Aircooled Porsches....

Actually slightly north of 1k sterling. And the damn supplier couldnt get my VAT back.

Please keep your fingers crossed for me that the thing actually works. Sat Nav will be useless cos there is no software for spore but the rest of the features should work fine..

Re: Aircooled Porsches....

I always thought the McIntosh units were also retro cool :) but it doesn't have the navigation features...

Too bad they don't have the old models with the VU meters :p

Re: Aircooled Porsches....

Wah liao, really cool. I seriously thought there was no such restorer in Singapore anymore. Had a couple of gos with Beeltes, Minis and Alfa series 105s but this detailed Porker absolutely takes it all. Why didn't you consider the red and white colour scheme? :)

Does this restorer have cars for sale too? as in cars consigned to him? Will he be willing to look at an example pre-purchase stage to determine the general health?

He does have cars for sale where you can take them on as projects. But beware. He is always optimistic in terms of time frame. Take his estamate and double it at the very least. He said 3 months for my project. It took 12. But after all the wait, it is worth it.

For the longest time he had a 3 litre turbo begging for someone to take on as a project. Happily (maybe not from your point of view), there was a happy customer who took it on some 3 months ago. That should be done within the next 2-3 months. Go visit him. He has that 930 project and his own ultra track focused long hood 911 that are both going to be completed soon in the garage right now.

Err... you got a Cayman and you need to drag your ass to work to pay for that unjustifiable 2 seater, or you are dragging your ass to work to buy a Cayman? At the very least you KNOW what you want.... great.

Re: Aircooled Porsches....

If I have a Cayman, I will be jumping out of bed each morning at 6am to get to work. Using the longest route, no less. :)

Hmm, let me re-read this post to get his name and contact. Let me look for a friend who is willing to start a project with me.

My experience was more extreme than what you think. If you had a car you really like to drive, at least for the first few months, you might not only drag your axs out of bed at 6am every day, but also:

Every Sunday at 6.00am to 8am
every alternate night from 10.30pm to 12am
every chance you have to go offsite you take it

and you'd scour google earth and swear at the Singapore government why they had to close out the entire west Singapore with all the great roads for live firing areas.

I think Boris might be doing it too .....

Actually I'm driving much slower now than with soft suspension cars. I drive my odyssey FASTER for LONGER periods (170km/h for 1.5 hours thereabouts, limited by my fear of the brakes being lousy, compared to short spurts of speed with the Cayman.)

The Cayman is NO GOOD on big motorways. In fact this car has NEVER been to the NS highway, and toto's suggestion to go to Desaru via the small roads sparked off all the stupid small trips via the backroads. Straightline Speed has become largely irrelevant, compared to mercs and 6-ers which I took them to 230-240 thereabouts, I don't feel the need to go fast anymore. I don't know why but I'm not alone: there are several forum postings in P-forums titled loosely: Why am I driving so darned slow in a fast car?

Yes, the Odyssey is truly comfortable for a long haul. Despite better pads and hoses, mine still does not stop well too. You need APs. Look for Espace.

End of OT. Back to the air-cools :)

It will be worth every cent. I had so much trouble finding a retro-looking iPod ready head unit (for 80s/ 90s cars). Ended up with a nice Alpine that has a relatively simple black finish (and switchable fascia lighting). Running the iPod through the 24-bit onboard DACs, the sound is pretty good, though. :)

Sorry if I missed something, but which E30 are you looking for? Or just any E30 for a project? :)
