Re: All about Z4 (E89/ E86/ E85) thread

Anyone did ECU software update on E89 lately? Heard that the latest update helps to improve gearing ratios and exhaust efficiency too. Just wondering for those with JB3/4...must that be totally removed before the update? Or you can have it on bypass mode?

the smell is v bad at the exhaust...and my FC is 6.0km/l

cars have some other issues too...i have the intermittent vibrations and thumping sound when idling, aircon not cold, transmission not smooth, i.e. got problem when trying to rev from 2k rpm to 3k rpm in normal mode.

many problems...

Ouch man, looks like you got to bring the roof down and drive hard... that way settles all your problems (albeit temporarily):
- no need aircon
- car not idling
- revs kept high

Haha. :)

On a more serious note, hope you find a good mech to settle these niggling problems.

PML reset my idling RPM (or something like that) and changed my spark plugs today, and the intermittent vibrations/thumping seem much better now - still there but not as rough as before and a lot more infrequent... will continue monitoring...

mine is also about 9.5km/l on 17inch stock rims.. so i guess rims does not affect consumption that much?

Might it be exhaust that is affecting the fuel consumption?

Re: All about Z4 (E89/ E86/ E85) thread

Hi guys,

Need some SOS advice on the E89. Lately, I can hear a not loud but clearly audible "clunk" sound from the undercarriage whenever I accelerate or decelerate. Appears to come from rear suspension so I took it back to AD. They took about a week to identify that the sound seems to come from the rear axle. Say need some special equipment from BMW Asia to do some assessment. After they got hold of this special equipment and did some tests, told me the sound is from the engaging and disengaging of the transmission shaft/axle and that it is an inherent sound for all E89s, including the new ones they use for test drive. Is this true? Because i don't remember hearing it when I 1st got the car. And if it is indeed some inherent problem with the E89, shouldn't the manaufacturer do something about it if it is a design flaw? I was told to go test drive my car and other E89 at AD but haven't got the time to do it due to work schedule. The car has been at AD for over a week now. Hope fellow owners/forumers here can help shed some light. Many thanks.

Is this happening all the time? Even on normal "D" mode and normal driving? Yours is a 35i?
I hear a gear jerk "kerng" sound when decelerate suddenly in "S" mode. I assume this is due to sudden downshift needed to bring the gear speed down in quick succession. For 7-speed DCT, you will still need to downshift from 7 to 6 to 5 to 4..etc. Did not hear anything from the rear axle. It will be audible indeed since E89 rear wheel sits pretty close to the driver. h

Re: All about Z4 (E89/ E86/ E85) thread

Ok my E85 roof motor is finally dying...today it barely managed to fold back up (after some serious straining noises). :helpp!:

Any bros here can recommend where is a good workshop to get this changed (heard its a b*tch to dismantled and re-attach and align the roof mechanism)?

Also read in other forums that the motor normally breaks cos it is rusty as the part is not properly sealed...anyone has experience with a workshop that knows how to get this done to prevent future motor failure?

Lastly, what's the likely damage for part + labour? Would it be worth ordering the roof motor from Eng Soon myself?

Tks for helping with the bunch of questions!

Mine is 23i and yes it's the "kerng" sound that is especially audible in Sport mode. It happens whenever I step on the accelerator or lift off. The technical guys at PML advised that it's due to change in load on the propeller shaft and has ordered a replacement shaft to address the issue. However, he said that the sound may return after some time as it's an inherent issue with the E89. Will be sending my car in when it arrives and keeping my fingers crossed.

Then there is also the incessant creaking sound from roof, the A pillar and top of the windscreen when I drive over uneven roads or humps or potholes. The PML guys has already fixed the roof one and I'm gonna ask them to do something about the A pillar and windscreen creaking. All the noises get on my nerves... It's like driving a Lao Pok Chia you know.. I think it's due to the cheap plastic material BMW use in these areas. Frankly I'm quite disappointed with the cabin quality even though the driving dynamics is great. My previous and current other supposedly "cheaper" convertible has no such noise watsoever. It's making me rethink of having another BMW after this.

Also, PML dented my car door, those 10 cents size dent when people open door in bo chup manner, when trying to fix all my problems... They say will fix it when I send my car in to replace the propeller shaft. That's the paranoid I have when sending in cars into workshop.. chances are something will be fixed and something else will be damaged.. haiz...:(
