Buying 2nd hand BMW

Re: Buying 2nd hand BMW

Hi all,

Am looking at changing to pre owned IS250 (08/09) or BMW 520i (08/09). Wondering if there is any advise on how can we determine if a BM does not have the much talked about engine oil / leakeage issue etc. Also it is Dec 08 registered and the current mileage is 78,000 km, what's your view on this?

Lastly, during the test drive, when going up multi story car park slope, I can feel some jerking on the steering wheel, is this pointing to a major issue?

Any advise from all much experienced beemers are strongly welcomed, thanks all.

Re: Buying 2nd hand BMW

Double check with mechanic, inform the sales person that the car got undercarriage noise. Better get it rectify.

Re: Buying 2nd hand BMW

based on my past experience, I will keep aside at least $10k for future repair cost cos other deflects may line up in queue. Along the way, It Bring More Worries but Ultimate Driving feel . Worth it!!!..

lol. in much better shape than me bro. im on pre-lci e90. in my 3 months of ownership, i've replaced 4 absorbers, 4 brake discs/pads, repaired all oil leaks and valve seals, overhauled gearbox solenoid, and changed out 4 tyres. total bill so far approx 6-7k..
although i must say, right after i repaired everything, i feel that the car is rly shiok to drive................... for a month. after that my backside abit itchy and start looking at sgcarmart for the inline-6 models already (too underpowered).
bimmers are really poisonous..

Haha saw this quote and thought it's funny. Wait till you try knocking into Hyundai tuson. That fellow is a tank! So far witness 2 accidents involving 3 cars.1st BMW 523i in front , tuson in middle and Honda accord rear. The 523 boot totally gone, tuson scratches only, the Honda accord bonnet damn jialat. 2nd. First taxi, tuson middle and rear BMW 7 series. Taxi rear also gone, tuson scratches from and back, 7 series bonnet went in half, leaking all over.lesson learned Never try banging a tuson haha. Never try banging anyone.

Re: Buying 2nd hand BMW

Believe avoid all SUVs as their mass heavier than cars, be it Tuson or other makes.

Yeah, avoid banging or tail-gating any SUV or bigger mass cars in front of you esp lane 1 on the highway.

I have just bought mine from a dealer. But my advice is to request to send to a comprehensive cx by a bimmer specialist at own cost or vicom comprehensive evaluation test. Must also insist on at least 6 months full warranty. Some only offer to cover just gears and engine. During issuing of warranty the workshop change atf, fan belt, shock absorber hub cap, did a servicing under the dealer cost.within a week after taking over, coolant warning light came out, replaced water pump and thermostat claimed under warranty . Hopefully anything needs to breakdown, happens within the 6 months warranty.

Otherwise buy from PPSL that comes with one yr warranty but usually higher price.

so much more higher... might as well take the extra money saved to spend on mods/ repairs

Re: Buying 2nd hand BMW

Yea . At least 20-30k higher . But guarantee genuine mileage and better after sales service for peace of mind .

Re: Buying 2nd hand BMW

hey guys,

was wondering if sgcarmart would offer a better deal over here? or there's hidden agenda from the dealers. if the vehicle has m0re than 2 or more owners, is it still a good car?

choosing 3 series over 5 series is a headache but seriously most of you guys would suggest to go with the feel when test driving?

Re: Buying 2nd hand BMW

I think another valid question will be, does e60 525i comes with spare tyre? My 2nd hand dealer claims that nowadays bmw does not comes with spare tyre. What to do if puncture on NSH? Thanks.

Nowadays BMW does not come with a spare tyre because they are OEM equipped with run flat tyres. Run flats even with a puncture, you can continue to drive at 80kmph for upto 80-100km.

Of course owners can opt to change them to conventional tyres.

Re: Buying 2nd hand BMW

Thanks for the advise, any idea how much does run flat tyres cost? Which brand / model is better?

05-06 build quality is not v gd. esp the interior. quite some noise evwrywhere. 07 onwards bmw changed them and the subsequent batches r better. u shld lay aside at least 4k to settle wear and tear.. valve seals/oil seals/gearbox solenoid/mountings/absorbers/brakes/radiator/alternator/aircon probably need some replacemwnt down the road.
advise is to get a high milege 06 523, 2-3owners. prev owners prob did alot of replacements for u alr. or just get a low milege 07 523 and do the rest in future slowly....

most importanrlt, testdrive more cars. u'll b surprised at how different the cars can feel, esp if prev owners took care of e ride.
