Buying a 2nd Hand 3 Series

Definitely go for 323 as it's an IL-6 and 2.5L if you can afford it and i hear it's more reliable.

The 320 engine which is an inline-4 is ultra sensitive, and is quite well known for all sorts of engine leaks / water leaks / so wear and tear costs is quite high. Engine issues aside, you have to look at potential auto gearbox issues, etc.

There are alot of 320's in the market but most are in need of quite alot of maintenance to bring it up to running specs, so you have to choose carefully.

One dealer told me before when buying BMW, when given a choice, buy the unit that has a full servicing record (i.e. hard copy paper), compared to one that doesn't have.

Even that i suggest you bring your intended target (320/323) to a BMW specialist such as Munich Auto (AD), BVO, or R2D to get it assessed properly. STA / Vicom cannot tell you specific BMW problems to look out for as they are not specialist in this make.

Finally, i am driving a 320i and loves the car for the way it handles, drives, and the safety i feel in it. However, i have been there, done that, and spend quite alot to maintain it so this may not what everyone is looking for - esp most of us that have come from Japanese ownership previously.

Hope this helps

Thanks bro for the detail analysis.

Prefers a 323 too, but its limited to what i can choose from in the market (06' 07').

Thought wanna make do with a 320, heard can reflash to 323 specs..

Re: Buying a 2nd Hand 3 Series

Indeed, 323/325i are quite hard to find now, given BMW has phased out normally aspirated IL-6 from the latest release of F10/F30.

320i which is a IL-4 how to flash to 323i which is a detuned IL-6, 323i reflash to 325i maybe still possible since both are running 6-cyl engines? :ehhh:

IMO, i wouldn't flash any used BMW you buy esp 5-6 year old car, more stress on the engine/gearbox, you don't want to break it and spend more money fixing it after-wards.

That said, i am sure there're some good and well maintained 320i around, just look for the enthusiast BMW owner like from BMW-SG hehe

Well just go for sprint booster add on , I don't really see a need for more power if you are on normal daily driving . Well , you can always go to manual shift if u do require the 'kick' hahaha.

Hey bro, how does a sprint booster help in the performance?

The 'manual' shift from E90 is not dual clutch (please correct me if i'm wrong), unlike DSG..

The gear change sometimes work slower than auto mode..:|

Just more responsive that's all , won't add more bhp hahaha ,

Dual clutch ? Not too sure but you don't have to step on the clutch pedal for sure ...

Fc about 8 - 10

FC is down to driving style and whether on highways or city jams..
Bought mine Beemer from Turf City, turns out milage had been tampered with (reduced by 20K)
and spark plugs were not right, etc. Risk always there.
Pay a little more for assessing your car by one of our site sponsors before sealing the deal, that is a safe option to consider

Re: Buying a 2nd Hand 3 Series

Hi bro, sorry to hear about your experience at Turf City. Did you find out from CASE if you can sue them as this is considered tampering?

Also, i was told that buying from one of these car-marts etc from these small guys, that they can't reduce price much, also they will not do anything to improve the used car they take in. Sad fact is since they are dealing with smaller volumes as compares with the bigger boys, they will be tempered to resort to unscrupulous methods to sell their cars.

So you do have to take note whom you are buying from, and always get a independent BMW specialist workshop to assess your used Bimmer.

If you think buying from a bigger dealer is safer, think again.
One of the biggest I know, the owner used to be a loan shark
Now you know why so many of their sales people got the "rusty" look.

Or you can request for pml servicing records for the car , mine had full records till 50k and well , kinda sketchy because its 57k mileage for an 07 car ... but well the interior and outlook looks very well maintained

Got it and didn't regret , although I had to change the brake pads as it was nearly gone! Others were all in tip top condition !

Re: Buying a 2nd Hand 3 Series

I got mine from the most reputable dealer.....at Kg Arang. Only a few months later did I realised that my tools box was empty. And they claim to have what.... 72 pt check? Unless the tool box happened to be the 73rd point!!!

Sad to know that there are such irresponsible dealings going on even through the reputable company..

Well said, life goes on, no matter what.. :|

Re: Buying a 2nd Hand 3 Series

Actually all these depend on the previous owner, not the car dealer fault but only if they knew what they sold or lied about the car condition.

Re: Buying a 2nd Hand 3 Series

Hi all,
I'm brand new to this forum and would like to get some expert opinions on the following:
I'm currently driving a 6yr old Japanese make; always loved bmws and recently saw a 1991 pre owned 318i on sg carmart..it looks like it is in a very decent condition and of course very very stylish as well ( but then again, you never know, it's a 21 yrs old vehicle ) the owner has just renewed the Coe till 2019.. And has also told me that the engine and gearbox was recently overhauled in may, bushings and parts were replaced..am thinking of requesting for a sta check on the car..

I would love to get this car but just wanted to ask around for any watch outs? Should I or should I not? Is it worth the gamble to get such an old car? Will it choke up a huge some of maintenance and repair fees?

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!

Re: Buying a 2nd Hand 3 Series

Do they have the receipt to prove on the overhaul?
Dun think STA can help much...

I just got my ride too & dealer bought service warranty from a workshop.
Firstly, this ride need to evaluate by them, if they found problem, they won't allow you to purchase the service warranty unless the potential issue is solved, by them or any other workshop. If the evaluation is ok, you'll have to perform your regular servicing with them.

This way you can find out more about this ride before purchase.
Hope that helps
