That sounds serious, definitely need to monitor more closely from now onwards yeah.

Check the heel nut, heat exchanger, vanos solenoid areas for signs of black dirt accumulation. This black dirt is a sign on oil leak and dirt get stuck on the oil. My car had leaks at the heel nut and vanos solenoid. Under tray was basically an oil pond

The tray underneath is totally dry. Just had valve seals done and now monitoring. Unfortunately, car seems to vibrate ever so slightly now when at idle... Going for tune up again

Tune up is not the solution for the vibration. Solve the root cause for peace of mind

Dear all,

I am experiencing the same problem, however a loss of about 500 ml of EO after 800km. I have checked under carriage and there are no visible heavy leakage just probably a slight leakage on the fly wheel oil seal i reckon.

can i know if it is the valve seals problem. what are the symptons?

By the way, where do you guys get the parts? eng soon?

If i would like to go jb to fix the problem, is it better to bring my own parts or i can depend on the workshop in jb?

thanks guys.

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

The parts are cheap. It's the labor that is expensive

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

White Smoke emitting from the exhaust.

Leakage is internal into the valve seals, so u dun see it (I was told)

Valve seal set is cheap - less than $50 iirc. Bought mine from Eng Soon.
I would advise you to bring your own there, so dun need to wait for their delivery order to reach, if they re out of holding stock.

Valve seal replacement takes an average of 4 hours for N46 320. (more valves for 325 would take longer expectedly)
Be prepared to wait a full day, it seems there is only 2 mechanics specialising in this task.

Good luck!

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

I was told by a local workshop that the valve seals and valve gasket replacement will take at least 2-3 days as there's a lot of work and also to ensure proper checks are done (instead of open, replace and close back).

Can any bros who had done theirs share the actual time needed and the quality of work after which?

If done locally sounds about right. Should last u a few years before it returns.

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Seems like this is a perennial problem with the n46 engine. I've been living with the same issue for the last one year. No discernible leaks within the engine bay, and yet the engine oil low level light comes on every 2000km or so. Been servicing my car at a reputable workshop (one of our site sponsors), and couldn't seem to trace the source of the problem either. This led me to think that it's got to do with the old age of my car (9.5 years and soon to be due for scrapping... Good riddance)

Recently however, it dawned on me that it could have been an issue of faulty oil sensors all along, rather than a leak. i came to that conclusion when the low level oil light came on right after a regular servicing, when I knew the oil had been topped up to full. I took the risk to ignore that indication, and the light continued to come on the next few times I started up the car. This went on for about a week, before the sensor started functioning normally again (and telling me that my oil level was actually full....). And then just about a month later, the entire sensor went kaput (threw up a fault code that says the sensor needs replacement). Since I'm about to replace my ride any moment, I figured I'll just live with the faulty sensor and top up 1L of engine oil as a precaution every 2000km or so.

Not suggesting that all the n46 oil problems are alike, but if you have a long way to go before changing your ride and nothing else seems to work, might wish to consider replacing your oil sensor. Lots of similar discussions on the wonky electronic oil sensors in the U.S. Forums too... Makes me wish we have a bloody dipstick sigh.

All the best in resolving your problem though!

Nah. Just the valve seals bro. Screwed up design

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Just get a workshop to drain out and measure the oil and we will be able to know if it's losing oil.

Most of the time oil loss is for real. I was told BMW's oil sensor hardly fail.

Mine failed after top overhaul. Lol

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Hi... i oso having the e/g oil loss issue but im not sure is the e/g oil sensor faulty or oil valve seal. My e/g top up light comes up very intermittently. Sometimes indicate 3/4 full sometimes less than 1/2 n sometimes top up 1 litre. Someone can advise more?

Louis. I had both issues before. If u not certain drain the oil out to check

Change the oil sensor first before you do anything else, if your EO level is yoyoing.

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

Louis, same issue here. Warning popped up a week ago (after just 4k km since last EO servicing), so topped up 1L, after that, showed half level, today even show full (checked first thing in the morning after car warmed up). Hopefully no leakage, and just a wonky sensor.

Re: Case of My E90 (320i) Disappearing Oil - 1 liter every 2000++km!!

recently, my e90 pop out the 'engine oil low' icon upon engine start.. when i check the engine oil level, it says 3/4 full
the e90 has 4.5litre when full, so 3/4 full = 3.3litre
btw it has been 6months since my last oil change (~6k km)
i went to workshop for advise
the technician drained the engine oil into a empty 4litre bottle, only to discover more than 4litres was drained out
that means the error code that says need to top up engine oil is wrong, probably due to faulty sensor
however, when the technician did a full oil change, the error code did not appear again, so the sensor is not faulty...it does sensed that the engine oil was top up fully.... but when i check the engine oil level again , it still show 3/4 full... very weird

Hi,

I am new to this forum. I have faced the same problem as my 2008 320i prompt me to top up +1 less than 2 weeks from my last top up. May I know what will be the next oil change after servicing? normal Japanese car oil change will be at 10K km interval, how about 320i? Thanks
