E36 318IS with problems

Hi,

I just bought a 1992 E36 318IS recently and had it sent to a QC Inspection.
Car is still able to drive but I doubt it will last. Before it breaks down at PIE or ECP,
I think I better sent it for a major servicing. Any recommendations of workshops that does a good job without a cut throat price?

These are some of the results for QC Inspection:-
1) Coolant Leak at Engine
2) Camshaft Sensor Oil Leak
3) Abnormal Engine Noise
4) Water Leakage into Rear Boot
5) Battery Compartment Rusty
6) Gearbox Oil Leak
7) Gear Selector Needs Replacement
8) Engine Oil Leak
9) Power Steering Pump Leaking

Re: E36 318IS with problems

i'd recommend R2D ...

Re: E36 318IS with problems

You can go M&Q or R2D and the water leakage can be solve by

4) Water Leakage into Rear Boot = take out light and check got water inside r not. If yes, go buy gasket for tail light from Eng Soon to replace
5) Battery Compartment Rusty = due to water leakage from tail light

what kind of rating u want? haha
i think Boss and BVO are doing more of the newer models.
for older models like our E36, its best to go to find rodney of R2D or old school M&Q
don't go Zen auto...waiting time can faint ah...keke

M&Q since its just old school basic stuff, nothing too ex.
get a quote from there before starting.
M&Q yes. Mr Chia will take care of things.

recently changed the clutch pump with them.
including labor, only $70. (the clutch fluid my own.)

wouldn't go too wrong when the guy drives an E30. and most of the customers are old school BMW cars.
*at least that what i saw when i was there.

Re: E36 318IS with problems

All 4 workshops suggested so far are very familiar with the E36...just have to see which one you're the most comfortable with.

Re: E36 318IS with problems

Hi Guys,

Thanks for all the feedbacks.

I drove to R2D in the afternoon after I got my car and found out that they are closed. (Just found out they opened only at night)

I drove to M & Q at Tampines. When I arrived, I supposed is owner raised his voice just like I pissed him off at me when I come out of the car. I was shocked and a little angry at 1st but I just calmly talk nicely. He told me if I gonna wait, I gonna wait 2-3 hours and I just say ok.
In the end he was nice guy and advised me what to repair and what not to change. (I came to know about my car's history)

Re: E36 318IS with problems

The owner of M & Q had advised me to go back to his workshop after CNY and wants to be test drive the car and note down the car behavior.
I noticed that when my car comes to a stop, my RPM was around 950-1050RPM. Sometimes it also drops to 850-950 then struggled to go back to 1000RPM.
Is the RPM normal? My old ride was like around like 500 when it came to a stop.

So far, that was the 1st 1/4 tank I got it from my dealer. My friend told me that dealer sometimes like to buy petrol from car scrapers which contained mixed qualities/grade of petrol. So now I just finished the old 1/4 fuel and did a full tank pump of Caltex 98 grade petrol. So far haven't seen it often except when first start up of car in the morning.

Any people can advise me on this case?

+1000000!
I'll be better off driving a Chery QQ than live with all these problems. Bad news is these are the problems he knows right now. What about those he does not know yet?

Re: E36 318IS with problems

its varies with the individual...i for one would rather drive a lao pok bmw than the QQ.
don't mind spending a bit more money to reburbish it but to be fair (to my pocket), if the ride keep on having any major repairs, its best to move on to perhaps a E39 or E46.
spending a few ks every month to repair an old ride will eventually get to u and there comes a day where u yourself will debate whether to spend that few ks of repair money on something else more fruitful.

as for legendo, since he already got the car, no use crying over spilt milk.
best is to determine what needs to be rectified and how much and progress from there.
