E36 318IS with problems

Re: E36 318IS with problems

Thanks all bros for feedbacks,

sszone; I agreed with you. When I bought the old 1992 E36 318IS, I never thought of even looking at the price of a QQ.(QQ is labelled as 1 of the 3 problematic car in China). I think I would rather have a problematic BMW than a QQ.
Anyway, we all know when buying a old car, we have to be prepared to spent to refurbish it. As for me I bought this car at less than 13k so I couldn't expect it to be in good condition.

But firstly, I got to solve the mechanical problems, then followed by the cosmetic conditions, then finally my ICE~!

Gondolz; I never use SAFRA card, I just have to drive by Caltex, 5 mins away from my home.

After travelling with 100KM of Caltex98, I still have no signs of engine RPM dropping below 750 then climbing back up while stopping on the red-light. This happens only once when I stopped at the red light and switched on the air-con,the RPM dropped suddenly and goes back up. I wondered if it is related to the battery or spark plugs or what Mockngbrd had suggested the dirty AFM + hoses
Still, I will monitor again and give a update.

Errr.. What's a caburator spray? And where's the MAF?
I am terrible with Automobiles... I just know how to turn the key to start engine and of course the all we need to know to pass a driving license.

Re: E36 318IS with problems

in this case, just tell the workshop you experienced 'erratic' rpm. could it be MAF sensor dirty and suggest to clean it up
stand aside and see how the mechanic works. you can pick up a few things here and there

MAF = mass air flow sensor that measure volume and density of air entering the engine
if you are interested to find out more, search in youtube "bmw e36 maf" and you see many videos

Re: E36 318IS with problems

not MAF, the 4 pots use AFM. But yea, carb cleaner.
also check ur hoses for leaks or holes. Check if all ur spark plugs are ok. Give the car a good service

The Chery QQ example was just an example but my point is you are going to be sucked dry fixing all these problems. There are 9 known problems and many more unknown ones. These unknown ones will surprise you when you least expect them so you had better have deep pockets. Even my 4-year old car surprised me with a valvetronic motor failure recently. For a car close to 20 years, nevermind if it is a BMW or Merc, you know there are things that can never be completely fixed.

If you really love the car, be it the shape or simply the badge, I would suggest an engine overhaul and a rebuild. Good luck.

Re: E36 318IS with problems

Older BMW has less electronics/complexity and more easier to maintain...The owner must spent a lot of time scouting for good cond used parts from propel and spent time in workshop...

But I would have chosen a better specimen even if its slightly more expensive for obvious reasons. Imho E36 Cabrio will be nice car to refurbish and keep.

This may be true but the wirings and mechanical parts would have deteriorated over time. Shorting of circuits is not uncommon in old cars.

Re: E36 318IS with problems

i think i can clear some of the E36 doubts.

My E36 318iS 19yrs old, to me is just a simple car & little electronics. Reliable if you maintain it well. Never fail to start since I got it 9yrs ago.

JUst regular wear & tear to take note. Replace engine oil every 5000km with 10W-50. Clean filter. Take note on fan belts, casket rubber seal & check fuse box for any abnormalities like melted fuse. The car rpm fluctuates is common but it will go away after warm up or rev of engine. The air flow sensor is of older technology but it will not damage the car. U can try hold the rpm at 5000rpm for 1minute, everything will be ok.

Conclusion;
Same engine 430,000km , still powerful, FC 9km/litre
i rev my car redline daily & it still kicking.
Just got $170 & 8 points. i da man!

Wow 430k km done and engine still kicking...Time for overhaul or slap in the Supersprint! Btw in germany any Mercedes owner who clock a million km will get big reward from Mercedes Benz...this is what the cab driver told me and the chap has more than a million km on his E200.

1 million think cannot hit even thou COE till 2019.

touch wood... so far all the cylinders still looking good.

Re: E36 318IS with problems

What iScoupe says is true...as long as you maintain it well, know what to look out for, you can get a reliable ride from the E36. That being said, it is expensive to maintain.

I know someone restoring a 50s Beetle in JB. Doing everthing under the sun except the engine for only 9K+ SGD. You can look into that route.
