E92 manual or steptronic?

Hi guys.

Looking for some opinions before I commit...

For e92 325 or 335, does it make sense getting the manual?

The reason I am considering the manual is that I like the involvement of a manual drive as compared to paddle shifters and furthermore, according to the specs, the manual version is significantly faster (esp for the 325).

I am under the impression that the BMW steptronic is still a far cry from the VW group DSG gearbox...

However, if I do get the manual, am worried about residual value of the car...are there ready buyers of manual versions of the e92 325 or 335? Any cruise control function for manual version like some conti cars?

Feedback appreciated!:)

Yes manual is more involving than the steptronic but the new transmission in the 335 is a marvel. A farcry from VW DSG gearbox in terms of shift speeds. This step on the 335 shifts in 100ms. DSG is slightly faster than that. But remember that the torque limit on the DSG is far less than the 335. The 335 step can take quite alot more torque than the DSG. DSG gearboxs tends to mis-shift when more torque is added and it has been confirmed in an array of forum user experiences. FTW, you should go manual if you are gonna do serious power mods. Otherwise, the 335 step should suffice. As an example, 1/4 mile drag timings and trap speed are dominated by the 335 steps. But u cant beat involvement like the manual. You gotta ask youself what you want.

Re: E92 manual or steptronic?

I am not as knowledgeable as Elmariachi, but just to highlight it in case u havent test drove the E92. Do you know there is no + and - on different paddles but both shifts gears up n down on same paddle. Even my wife loves playing with the paddles now. The best thing is assuming u are cruising in D mode(gear M6), and u decide to chase down a matachia. 2 quick tabs on the step paddle on the steering can quickly downshift to M4 like Elmariachi said and u can zoom away. The beauty is u can do all this with yr right hand alone leaving yr left hand to do whatever it should to the left passenger. Leaving the step untouched from there the car will go back to D after a while....brilliant right?

Most importantly whether manual or steptronic, colourwise just dont get black. Global warming these days.

Oh btw just noticed yr name is SithLord. Were you persuaded by Darth Vader(who also drives 335) to get one?

Re: E92 manual or steptronic?

I've tried the e46 M3 SMG paddle shifts and I find that too jerky. Haven't tried the current paddle shifts though...will check it out.

Errm...resale of manual e92? any problems there?

I have been reading a lot of posts here rgd black e92s being beng...what's with black? I know the trend now is towards white...BMW, porsches, Audi...etc...but I've always thought that beemers looked good in black. I have a white car now and it really is much more difficult to mantain than the previous black one.

Can someone explain this phenomenon (black beemer=beng) to me please? Just curious...

Re: E92 manual or steptronic?

isnt the 335 using ZF 6HP19? same trans as E60 520-530...

Its the software thats making the faster shifts right? Hardware same..

Oh so yet another prospective black e92 owner *clap clap clap*. So now we are slowly building a list of 325/335 star war characters, still lacking R2D2, C3PO, Chewbacca....

U also need to start looking for a set of Beng driving attire to complete the whole experience - crocodile brand singlet, black cotton shorts, bata slippers, a pack of marlboro and of cos a very beng sunglasses.

Wait, what your choice of seat colour?:(

haaa
what is the interior color u like? black is easy to maintain....

Re: E92 manual or steptronic?

Usually resale value is affected. Hardly people want manual for luxury marques.
It's just harder to sell. It's different stories in countries like UK or US where manual cars r v common.

Re: E92 manual or steptronic?

if I were in your position, to buy a E92 format car, I'd buy the M3 NO QUESTION NO DEBATE NO THINKING.

Please please please go buy an M3. It's so much more car just for 30% more ....

I could also say if my first name was "Sheikh" (ie I will be called Sheikh Beng), I'd buy M3 No questions. Maybe even buy 7 of them, one in each colour so drive a diff colour each day.

But the thing is 30% more = ??? extra $ :screwedu:

Re: E92 manual or steptronic?

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Let's see...

seat color will definitely be black. Light colors are out as too difficult to maintain.

Interior trim either brushed aluminum or (considering) piano black.
Black on black on black...later at night cannot find the car!

Triple M:
Thanks, kinda figured that out. Know anybody here with a manual e92?

Centurion:
Why not M3? Simple reason...$$$ don't justify...Can prob get significant hp gains from ECU reflash and some other minor mods for 335...should be easy as it's TC right?

Kentonna:
Why not Cayman S? Personal opinion...911 or nothing. And if it's a 911, has to be minimum Carrera 4S, add long list of options, etc, basically cannot afford yet...but working hard towards it!

hmmmm...interesting way of putting it...but can't dispute with the logic there:)

the cayman is lighter, higher revving, nimbler, same suspension everything because I bought the sport pack option. You can rev higher without having the same acceleration. Out of the track, that's a PLUS as it helps keep the license point free. And for most Porsches, consensus among editors (not buyers) is that the non-S is a better drive. I have driven both, and I find the 3.4, to its credit, TOO fast for me out of a track. Because I am not good enough for the S, I do not require its power.

I'm prefering the M3 to the 335 not for the power, but for the involvement. The 335 is halfway between a sports car and a luxobarge, I'd prefer something which made up the mind.

While Cayman is similar to the Cayman S save the power level, the 335 is not similar to the M3 at all, the ride, handling, power level, and involvement levels all differ.

Think that question is towards me.

But not a 911 for me unless the move the engine in front of the rear axle.

I have philosophical issues. :)
