Engine coolant water topup

Re: Engine coolant water topup

I remember many years ago, my father had a datsun,
radiator totally dried up
Open the cap ( cheap cap with a small spring) and poured half a pail
of water( tap water, no distilled water)
15 secs later the water shot up sky high 5 metres as water and steam
Spectacular

bro, i also just retify my coolant engine problem ,change the hose and water pump.now every morning check coolant , so far so good.still maintaining

bro.. how much u paid for?
recently my radiator show empty and smoke came out.. wtf,..
now in workshop.

Re: Engine coolant water topup

Encountered this weird issue of warning message on low coolant level even though coolant is at max level. Sent in to PML and they replaced the coolant expansion tank. Not quite sure if a cracked tank would result in such error message since the level of coolant remained at max. Then again, I am not an expert.

Re: Engine coolant water topup

Hope you got it all fixed.

BMW engine overheat will cause alot of other problems leading to expensive repairs so cooling system is one of the most important maintenance not to overlook.

Re: Engine coolant water topup

Could be the sensor fault in the old expansion tank, do you still get the warning after changing to new expansion tank? If not, then problem solved.

If not, then you have to ask them to check if the cooling system is bleed properly, that may lead to a faulty low coolant warning as well.

Thanks bro, that is helpful. Will keep a lookout for it.

Re: Engine coolant water topup

Would like to share my experience on the cooling system .. driving a 2007 E90.
This event between 130000 to 140000 KM (now) marks .. about half year period .. already cost more than $1500... painful.
- radiator leaked - changed
- expansion tank leaked - changed
- Rear end cover (Cylinder head) cover leaked - changed
- suspect faulty thermostat - changed
- what the heck .. all the hoses - changed
- new coolant
- fan and water pump... no fault code yet. Workshop said can still works normal.

Now here is my concern, hope Bro's here can advise .. the fan always run at high speed ..

Bought an ELM OBDII BT adaptor and downloaded Torque Pro to my Andriod phone. The following was observed the last 1 week.
- normal operating temp of coolant is about 105 to 108 deg C
- in slow traffic or jam or traffic light .. could go up to 110 degC
- very often it went above 111 deg C .. and the fan kicks in at max speed. Sound like a Tank now
- temperature drop to about 90 deg C +/- 2 or 3 deg C

Now the concern .. the fan still continue to run at max speed , as long as the engine is running and temp will stay about 90.

Is this normal ?? time to change Fan or Water Pump ?? Is the coolant temp profile normal ?
Continue spend $$$ like this .... will have to take the other BMW (Bus>>MRT>>>Walk)

Thanks ...

Re: Engine coolant water topup

Hi bro,

From what i observed, all the older BMW e.g. 5yo or above e90 / e60 will sound louder than when they are new.

Can't compare to the new F10/F30 which can be dead silent even when you see one beside you on the road.

Sounds like your present workshop is changing parts to see what works. Best is bring it into a competent workshop like R2D to check it out the real problem.

Could be the fan since that's the only thing you haven't changed. Mine is quite loud as well, but my fan is at running at high speed all the time, maybe

Re: Engine coolant water topup

Get a second opinion. Have it checked it at r2d .....

Maybe its just a thermostat issue .....

Re: Engine coolant water topup

Sometimes the water pump is not propelling the coolant fast enuf. there is a impeller inside which we cannot see. the water pump should be replaced at around every 80k. I have seen quite a few fail wout leaks. is ur car a 320?
if the fan sounds loud maybe replacing the coolant sensor at the engine block will help.

Re: Engine coolant water topup

Advice needed from experience bro.

My e90 radiator floating level indicator just broke. Can any workshop get it fixed or do I have to change the whole coolant expansion tank?

Does the OBC on coolant level still works without the floating level indicator (floating stick)? Which workshop is recommended to have it fixed.

Thanks!

Re: Engine coolant water topup

Where did the floating stick go ?

Hopefully it did not drop inside the tank ?

Was sucking out some coolant with a syringe because overfilled and accidentally broke it.
Stick still with me but unable to figure out if it can be connected back. Maybe it is broken from what I read online when doing some search. Any advice what is my appropriate next steps to get it fix?

Re: Engine coolant water topup

You are the powerest liao!!!! Like that also can!
anyway, i guess u gotta buy the part from eng soon and get a workshop to replace.

Not sure bout your e90. Realoem list my PFL E90 320 with this part
Level switch, coolant 1 17137553919 $17.42
