Thanks TS. Sometimes 2 opinion really is required. self note - must ask for 2nd opinion.

A couple years ago my E60 520 had a gearbox failure! PML diagnosis showed that the control box is gone! I had the choice of changing only the control box for about $4500 or more than $9000 for the whole box. I opted for the whole box as the gear unit may only last for another 50k km (mileage of my car then was about 100k km). I discovered later that there are workshops in town that could do a flashing of the entire gearbox for about $500 that could extend the box for another 30-50k km. I did it later for my E90 320 and the box works beautifully for more than a year till I sold it.

Dear all,

This post is especially for those who have gear box jerking problem and are at a lost at what to do.

For those whom are deciding to buy a pre-owned BMW and yet you have hear of scary tales of the expensive gear box repair, this post is to assure you that having to maintain a BMW is not so bad and I do recommend you to go ahead with the purchase of a BMW and join our big family.

Problem:
My BMW jerked forward when coming to a complete stop.
It’s not a very bad jerk but I do not enjoy it.
This is also known as common problem for E90 and I would deem this under fair wear and tear of the gear box solenoid.

Solution:
Simply replace the solenoid and with a reprogramming of the gear box.
My gear box works perfectly fine immediately after replacing the solenoids.

Function of solenoids:
Simply for the gear change from 1 to 6 and the 7th solenoid is for reverse.

Value for money recommendation:
Our BMW has a 40,000 KM gear oil change interval together with the oil pan which is actually the in-build gear oil filter. So I recommend to do the solenoid replacement together with the gear oil change as part of the servicing.

Items needed:
Please see pics below.

Oil pan with build in oil filter

Gear oil * 7 bottles

Replacement solenoid to solve the jerking problem.

Conclusion:
Our gear box is still great and should last us for a long time. The solenoid in the gear box might not last as long but this does not mean our gear box is damaged unless proven otherwise that the gear box is really damaged and needs to overhaul. I hope this sharing helps to assure a lot of our bros and sis here for our BMW.

Just to check, after getting the WS contacts from bros here, I call some of them to compare prices.

One SG WS recommended quotes me $2.8k to change the whole valve body with solenoid and 7x ZF-lifeguard ATF but this is only for quotation sake, actual work required still have to depend on the inspection outcome. Lead time is one full day to do everything, that's if assuming change whole valve body.

I also call one of the AD to check and they advise me NOT to change ATF as they said the stock ATF has unlimited lifespan (within 10 yrs COE period I suspect?) so no need to change but if I really wanna change, the costs is $800 for 8L. As for the solenoid alone, the cost is $250. Again the actual work required depends on the inspection outcome so the above is just for quotation comparison sake.

I'm more keen to let AD do it (if just changing the solenoid can solve my car-jerk-when-coming-to-almost-stop problem) coz:

1. The WS is near my place (and I'm a lousy drive esp driving to new place, feel stress lol).
2. WS has 2 yrs warranty for solenoid after replacement.
3. Is it true that we don't have to change the stock ATF but I see many bros posting changing them instead (7L x $23?)?
4. If just based on changing solenoid alone, how's AD's $250 price compare with outside WS which changes only solenoid (ie just re-programming gearbox after changing solenoid, no change in ATF or other part of the valve body). Mine is a 7yo E60 with 80k mileage. I just replaced my oil pan last month (still under AD warranty when I changed it in 2012) so I presume no point changing the whole valve body esp if changing solenoid alone can solve my car jerk problem?

Lastly, just to side track abit, what is the usual cost to change front brake pad? Around $250-300? (AD quote $350 but if doing everything I dun mind but if only brake pad alone and outside WS is much cheaper, of coz go outside WS) Anything I shld take note when changing front brake pad? Is brand/model is important? Is AD stock better or same as outside WS stock?

Ya. I truly agree that the workshop recommended by Arron @permas jaya is great. Labour Price is good and best of all the mechs r friendly n knowledgeable that explains the flooding of bimmers fr jb n Singapore.2nd time there n i didnt have riggit to makan n Francis the boss just pass me $100rm to use 1st.so nice. Hah

For what's its worth, I had this jerking problem too, to the point that the engine felt like it was going to die when low speed and coming to a complete stop at the lights.
Did a diagnostic check and did not throw up any error codes.
So changed spark plugs n did a throttle body cleaning.
Will monitor and see if this solves the problem.

Just change the solenoids will solve the problem.

If it's a slight jerk while coming to a stop and starting off - a cheaper alternative would be to recode the transmission then see how.

how much u got the parts of gear oil, solenoid & oil pan. u didn't mention to change valve plate?

i did it within SGD $1000 +/-
you should expect market rate from $1800 - $3K ++

How does valve body look like?

I agree with u,
I am positive that my valve body is still in good condition thus able to last a good period.
In any case the valve body breaks down, I simply just replace the valve body and additional 7L of gear oil, reuse the oil pan.

I doing my GB overhaual. Scary to know @ 130kmh GB sign appeared.

I had this once before. Before I did my solenoids.
The error logo was gear box over heat
After that I tried NS highway again and nothing's happens

the programming should be done right after the solenoid is changed
