German Castrol and SAF-XO

Re: German Castrol and SAF-XO

If it's BMW branded oil, of course it's approved lol. Btw watch out if it's labelled LL-98 or LL-01?

The LL-98 is for older cars before 1998, and i have used it in my 320i for a few oil change w/o any issues.

LL-01 is the right one and the most bullet-proof if you are anal about making sure it's not just BMW approved oils, but also for 2001+ onwards BMW cars.

Not sure if you are asking me, but i am using GC 0w30 - which is the only type BMW approved for LL-01

Hey bro I was asking you and ts :) less than 100K use 0w30 should be fine right? :)

Re: German Castrol and SAF-XO

Personally - and it's just me trying the EO and looking at some stats ....

M1 0w40 > Amsoil 5w40 euro LL01 > Torco SR5 5w30 > LM 5w40 > Castrol Edge pro 5w30 > Helix 5w30

Re: German Castrol and SAF-XO

Today went autobacs, saw XRev 5w50 turbo EO.the specs is bmw ll04,so far any reviews ?

Re: German Castrol and SAF-XO

They are not on the BMW LL 04 and 01 approved list.

They did not publish their specs. They also used an old school concept of the choice of oil versus what BMW is prescribing.

IMHO - I won't pour anything that does not have published specs into the engine........

How can 5-50 be LL04?

LL01FE already 5-30.

Re: German Castrol and SAF-XO

What about Castro edge 5w40 API SM longlife-01 as compare to Castro edge 0w40 API SN longlife-01.. ?
I just got 5w40 as I thought its abt the same.... till I read this thread. ..
Currently using Castro 5w40 (made in EU) from NTUC. I think it shear at 3k km. Now sluggish. .
Not looking for long lasting eo but a better grade for the car. .

Wow. Then i must try m1. Is it smooth when reved? Some make the engine feel v rough when i take it to 6krpm, which is what i cant stand
Personally for those that i tried on e90 320-

Lm5w40 > pennzoil 5w40> millers 5w40> amsoil 5w40

Re: German Castrol and SAF-XO

The 5w40 is too thick in my opinion almost 14cst@100......

Re: German Castrol and SAF-XO

I just filled up on GC so it's too early to tell - but for now its GC > M1. GC is quieter than M1 on start up.

bro,can we use castrol syntech 5w 40 from mx trading for my 06 e90 320?

Re: German Castrol and SAF-XO

My thoughts are .... The specs on it looks thick. Almost 13% thicker over OEM specs at operating temp as well as when engine is cold.

IMHO - I think the engine needs the lubrication at cold start most. And when its thick, it's slow to flow where its needed.

Re: German Castrol and SAF-XO

by the way bro Red_Bean_Bun, what's your current mileage now on your car?

at least we have a rough idea :)

Re: German Castrol and SAF-XO

I am at 140k and using 0w-30 for awhile now so under 100k definitely.

Was on 5w-40 previously, the GC 0w-30 is much smoother all the way to 10k change interval.

Re: German Castrol and SAF-XO

Bro,
how the GC 0w30 in your ride now?

my current Pennzoil 5W40 has been in my engine for 7K Km, starting to feel its time to change EO.
Am thinking to pour in the GC 0W30 this time round, but my '07 e90 320 is now @146K km... should be fine ya.
my concern is that once this thinner oil goes in, will somehow seep thru the cracks and cause the engine to start 'eating' EO
