No lah. I drove to Sim Lim with the lower dash off and wires dangling and no PDC...

I must say, you will be surprised at how much engine noise that little piece of trim absorbs...

well, we don't really have that much choices in Singapore. If we were in the states we probably could get a Pioneer or ALpine HU that works well and fits in the the Dash compartment. Maybe you want to check mp3car.com | your source for mobile computing solutions to see if they have done any installations on the Z4 anot.

Re: GPS Round 2

thanks jaskin! will check it out.

Re: GPS Round 2

Yup thank goodness for the friendly people at Malsingmaps.
i know its a stupid question but for the malsingmaps maps could you use the voice routing feature?

The unit comes with 2 mounting options:

1) Windscreen suction thingy
2) Dash board mount with doublesided tape.

Of coure you can have custom mounts fabricated at ICE shops to move the unit further down to the front of the dash if you want. But functionally, nothing beats the factory mounting options. You get the best signal reception and best view when you mount it on top of the dash.

Re: GPS Round 2

cool buy, bro... Does your 610 comes with bluetooth for connection to the phone? How is the speaker and mic ?

I kaypoh answer first. Nivi 310, 360, 610, 660 will all come with bluetooth connection and will double up as a carkit. The screen will also double up as a number pad and you can dial using the touchscreen. It can also allow for voice dialling and sms (these last 2 features are phone dependent). You can read up more at Garmin website. The speaker and mic quality is top notch and the firmware is from Parrot (I believe) which makes very good bluetooth handsfree kits of their own.:)

Re: GPS Round 2

I realised one of my friend got it.. However, when I call via bluetooth, it doesn't show the user name and phone.... Guess my Treo 750v doesn't support as it is using v1.1...sigh

Hi ! Adam.

Excellent write up

May I know why you prefer to mount the GPS using Windscreen mount instead of Desk mount? Do you face any vibration problem?

If you used desk mount, will it damage the deskboard?

After reading so much about GPS now very tempted to buy one :yummie:

I always enjoyed reading your posting with lot of pictures :)

Next time we meet, please bring me for a ride. O.K.

Thanks bro.

I prefer the windscreen mount becos I don't wanna stick anything on my dashboard. If you use the dash mount, the base plate is just doublesided taped onto your dash. I can only imagine that the doublesided tape will become loose after some time. If the tape is so strong that it can last many years, when you take it out, it's bound to damage your dashboard. I might be wrong, but I'd rather not take the risk.

Functionally, I would prefer the dash mount as you can position the GPS unit to be closer to you. But it's still very useable, so I don't mind. Vibration wise, there should be not much difference between the 2. So far, in my 1 year experience of using windscreen mounted GPS, the vibrations have been negligible. My C320 definitely vibrates more than my Nuvi, proving the Nuvi mount to be better designed. When I say vibration, I mean the type that you can't really see, but hear that the joints are rattling just slightly. The Nuvi one got no sound at all so far. Also, the range of adjustment of the Nuvi is much better than the C series mount.

Feel free to ask me anyting else...

Ben,

In my case, I opted for the dash mount as it brings the Nuvi physically closer to me and also I am paranoid that if I rely on the suction mount against the windscreen, the suction will give way someday and I risk losing control of the car trying to grab hold of the falling baby.

I am less concerned abt the double-sided scotch tape from the dash mount leaving a mark as I will juz leave the mount there if need be and tell the next buyer of my car that it is GPS-mount ready keke.

Different strokes for different folks I guess.

P/s: CBS, very nice write-up as usual. We need more of u in this forum keke.:)

Re: GPS Round 2

Hi ! bro.

Thanks for your reply :)

I remember you bought this Nuvi 610 at S$1090 including Singapore/Malaysia Map.

Will the price be cheaper if I opt for without map? Since I can download from
GPS Maps of Malaysia & Singapore

What is your advice? Buy with map or without map?

I have been reading the GPS thread for past 2 days and now very confused

Re: GPS Round 2

Yes definitely cheaper without the map. Around $200 if I'm not mistaken.

Many people use it with mapsingmaps. It's definitely workable. I prefer the way the original Garmin maps does the search. But malsingmaps is definitely much more updated and detailed.

Having said that, I have both, and I never like to use malsingmaps in Singapore on both my C320 or my Nuvi simply becos of the way malsingmaps does the search.

So it really depends on you.

Re: GPS Round 2

Ben, get the Garmin maps. The malsing maps though very updated have their limitations. You cannot search landed ppty and sometimes when searching for HDB blk numbers, you do not get a search result. The malsing maps can complement but cannot replace the Garmin maps as yet.

Re: GPS Round 2

Hi ! Andy.

Thanks for the GPS demo during Feb 07 meet-up :)

I remember your set-up is very neat and nice.

My main concern is how to mount the GPS if I decided to purchase. I do not want this GPS to fly around if I suddenly jammed my brake. It can be very dangerous and may get hurt if hit by it :yikess:

Cheers !
