HID conversion for E39

Hi Marco, u may wanna check with Arsenal62 who has modded his lites.

Marco, need no worry about the error code before I add on the Hella ballast and H7 xenon on my end 2001 E39 I was prepare to get the cold scan module (Hella brand) to eliminate the check low beam error code if appeared and is going to cost two hundred plus of dollar. You are right about the internet info but is for older model if I'm not wrong because I did observe the execuitve model standard xenon light without using the cold scan module. After I installed the HID and everything worked fine with no check low beam error code. Try to get the ballast brand - Hella if you want to upgrade to HID. You will need to fab 2 x H7 bulb holder for the bulb using delrin (I still have the drawing and some spare delrin rod if you need it) and modified your existing H7 bulb holder to couple it , 2 x bracket to mount the ballast and secure onto the headlamp which look like original (or you can cable tie the ballast with room available) All in cost me less than SGD600 and I am happy with it. Checked with Wilson, he had seen it when I install the pulley at BVO and he didn't really notice it till I told him is from aftermarket installation.

My ballast & bulb get it from German Auto - look for Bob and he's helpful.
Happy mod.

Thanks Arsenal62 for your very very valuable input. The kit I'm looking at is from Autobacs called Xelux. Feedback from several posts here on BMW.SG and some other sites appears to suggest that it's compatible with the bimmer setup. Would it be ok for me to perhaps touch base with you (if you don't mind) on how you got your ride all wired up with the Hella kit.

BTW, also pretty keen on the underdrive pulleys as well but have kinda hung it up for the moment as I've just recently changed my serpertine (if that's what you call them) belt.

Hi T6 & Arsenal62, pardon my not coming back for this past week, been out of town and only just got back.

Arsenal62> Where are your ballast and ignitor placed in your engine compartment? I was told by the chaps at autobacs that these are mounted behind the bumper.....any truth in that? Would really appreciate it if I could take a peek as to how you ran your wires and mountings.

Thanks in advance :wavey:

marko-polo,

The ballast is mount onto the bracket (self -fab) and attached direct to rear of the headlamp moulding, almost identical to the original E39 xenon headlamp of mounting the ballast.

Try to meet this Sat 1500 hrs - 1600 hrs if possible at BVO.

Yup Marko, a bunch of us e39 owners will be meeting at the coffeeshop opposite BVO this Sat (27 Nov) from 2pm to 4 pm to chit chat. Hope to see ya.

Haha, this is actually an ad-hoc meeting as some E39 bros can't make it for tomorrow's mthly forum meet. Some gotto work, some got family commitments. We will know after this afternoon's meet if the guys wanna meet regularly.

T6/ Arsenal62

Got my HID fixed @ autobacs over the weekend........lights look great and no "error" code. Only grouse....wiring is in a mess and guess I'll have to fabicate a holder like the one you have installed over the cluster assembly. Any chance you have a JPEG photo I could refer to?

Damage S$480, other E39-ners, a worthwhile consideration.

Wah, I must go see your lites liao. The only headache is wif the fabrication. U must check out Nick's (Arsenal 62) fabrication... damn nice, juz like the OEM one. Nick has the drawings for the fabrication. Hopefully, he has the lobang on where he got his done.

T6, no problem man, next time there's a meet-up I'll let you in on my messy engine bay. Will give Nick a buz, really need help to sort the mess out.

Share a joke, just came back from the basement car park - was trying to adjust the beam - think I broke something cause teh entire headlight cluster assembly became real loose.....maybe time for me to get those clear lenses now that the amber ones are broke.
