interesting thread.....I suppose if kids are past child-seat age then coupe/cab is definately possible, in fact it will be fun for the kids as well.

Say if you have 2 kids, age 2+ to 3 and the younger one still an infant requiring rear-facing car seat and needs to be attended to, it would be impossible to have the older kid in a forward facing car seat in the front passenger seat with front airbag, how do you guys manage? anyone have a way round this?

anyways, its good to know there are guys out there with family of 2 kids not going for MPV....:yummie:....i guess the alternatives are there its just whether one wants to take the conventional route or do some adapting....

I think it's not a good idea to put a kid in a forward facing car seat in the front passenger seat becos the fornt airbag when it activates can realy cause serious damage to a kid.

My kid loves being in my cabrio, but she is always seated at the back.

Actually, there is one way to get a kid into the back seat without sliding the front seat - just open the roof and then plunk the kid into the rear seat.

Thanks to government tax structure changes, with an 2+ year Odyssey going for S$60K 2nd hand, there may be no need to compromise. Get a full blown MPV and a full blown roadster if that's your fancy..

I agree that the Odyssey is a nice car. In fact, it is my favourite MPV.

But if like in the case of my family, most of the time, the husband drives the "selfish" coupe/cabrio/roadster car, while the wife drives the "family" car, do ask yourself and your wife whether your wife would like to drive/park a big car like a MPV/SUV? Some women struggle with a big car especially in parking.

Exactly bro.....thats what I meant when I said it would be IMPOSSIBLE to have the older kid in a forward facing car seat in the front passenger seat with front airbag....:)

Cool but I guess this only works on cabs during fine weather, coupes still gotta slide the seat forwards.

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

hahaha this thread is getting longer n more interesting. keep it rolling fellas, oh I mean hiadees:) ...more contributions please:smack:

Actually unless I do some renovation to my car pouch, I can currently only park one matachia under shelter:( . So that means a second car will have to be parked in the open outside my house:furious: . Had an 'argument' with the significant other over keeping/selling the E90:singsing: and I was convinced to keep it, mainly bcos I maintain it very well. If anything I wont get a second car so soon, not at least after end of this year, and I wont be getting a Jippun car either, roadster or whatever. Kinda of like the mini-cooper-s...turboed 230 BHP with John Cooper Works upgrade. My son isnt that young as some of yours, so he can inherit whatever car next time when he gets his driving licence or when I become sian of the selfish car. Actually an E93 would be nice or an E92 M3, but sometimes u just tell yrself what else u could do with that kind of money u spent on these cars:screwedu:

I love 2-door cars but in my view, you can only contemplate owning a 2-door coupe/cabriolet/roadster if it is a 2nd car or you do not need to carry much luggage around, say on driving trips to Malaysia or when you go to Changi airport to pick up your family members. Most 2-door cars have limited luggage space, especially the cabriolets/roadsters when their roofs are stowed away.

If one's child is less than 3 years old, then a 2-door coupe/cab is not practical because of the inconvinience of getting the child in and out of the car. In this case, a 4-door sedan is necessary. After the child is 4 years old and can get in and out mostly by himself/herself, then it is fine. Most adults can get in and out with no problems, unless they are quite old.

Another thing to note is that cabriolets and roadsters with soft tops have poorer noise insulation. When you travel at high speeds on the NS highway, it will certainly be less comfortable than a hardtop. Will your family members be able to tolerate it?

No doubt, a soft-top car is a lifestyle and a compromise car. However, the times when you can enjoy a cool evening drive under the stars and early morning dawn drive when the sun is just breaking out makes it worthwhile.

If you have the chance to own a roadster in your lifetime, do it as well. A 2-seater car driving experience is different and must be experienced at least once in your lifetime. It does not need to be an expensive roadster. There are many affordable and good roadsters to own as long as you don't need to own the latest models.

I currently own a 2-door/4-seater cabriolet and a 4-door sedan. I am contemplating swapping the 4-door sedan to another cabriolet. My heart says YES, but my head says NO.

Your post is one of the best on this thread. Since u have been driving a cabriolet ///M, I suppose thats your cheong car. Any complains or whatsoever about the cabrio?

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

I am lucky that my wife also loves driving and does not complain about my enthusiasm for cars. When it was time for me to part with my 2-seater Z3 (because my little daughter cannot come along for rides with us), my wife told me that I can change into anything I like as long as it is a opentop.

So, I decided to get the E46 M3 cab because, while the M3 cab is heavier than a coupe, it allows me to retain the best compromise of daily driveability, opentop driving, power and superb handling. Most of the time when I am in Singapore, I can't speed anyway and so I try to drive with the roof down whenever I can. When I do get to go on the NS, then I can really push the car to high speeds. I don't have to say much more about the good things in relation to the technical aspects of the M3.

Any complaints about the cab? Well, its minor., It shakes and scuttles - my Lexus/Toyota Camry owner-friends who are not used to cabs always ask me about it (and they probably feel sorry for me) and it's noiser - from 160 kph upwards on the NS highway, I can't enjoy the music from the speakers. That's also why I never bothered to upgrade my ICE and buy the very nice GruppeM Titanium exhaust system with blueish burnt tip from Alex/Rapture. If it is already loud for a coupe, then I better don't make it worse for myself in a cab.

Another thing I like about the E46 M3 cab is that it is not as flashy as a Ferrari, Lamborghini, Porsche etc. Not that I got anything against these marques (I would love to own them one day), it is just that some people (e.g. bosses/employers who are non-car enthusiasts) may mind and therefore, I would rather keep a lower/humbler profile.

Did I mention that apparently there are only 8 E46 M3 cabs left in Singapore?

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

I am driving the 325i coupe as my only car. For CNY, when I had to ferry my parents/sis/wife for visitng, I had to borrow my brother-in-law's sedan. But it is a small inconvenience. I sold my Celica for a S40 T5 previously but ended by selling the T5 after 1.5 years for the 325 coz I have "lost that lovin' feeling" for sedans.

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

Interesting thread no doubt!

Although I don't own a bimmer (not yet anyway), I share similar concerns with many bros here. I currently drive a 350z and its great for my other half and me now. However, going fwd as my family expands, I'm thinking what I'm going to do with the car.

Personally, I love coupes and do I agree with Mixmaster that owning a roadster/coupe is something to experience at least once in your life time, preferably when you're still relatively young.

As such I'm wondering if a 2+2 coupe would be comfortable enough for a young family/baby seat? How old your kids can grow to b4 it becomes a pain? My parents & in-laws are rarely in Singapore, maybe 2-3x a year so for those times, we can suffer some inconvenience I suppose. (although they have made passing comments on my 2 seater..hehe)

I'm thinking of (a) get a 5 series which I guess will solve a lot of practical problems but it is not as exciting a drive? or (b) get a 2+2 (thinking of a e46 330 or e46 M3 if I can find one) (c) buy a cheap MPV like a 2nd hand Wish/Stream + a Z4 for myself

Of course the best option would be an M5 but I can't afford it! :-D

I think option (a) would be the cheapest from my back of the envelope calculations...should I use my head or use my heart here?

Cheers,
B

same rationale from head to toe...

bot a cabrio bec wanted to live a childhood dream... wife got hooked as well... along with my boy... n its oredi 2yrs liao... got accustomed to all the inconveniences (space constrain/ noise -gruppeM & SuperSprint:) )

now its worst... got addicted to power/handling/drive... n current cab getting old... n another kid came along...

so now... looks like i have to go the 2 cars path as well...

no doubt as the Odessey is cheap/good n serves all family's purposes n needs... but both my wife n i agree that non of us will enjoy the drive... so how? i have given her
something "nice" all these while... now she doesnt want anything less... knn :lol2:
so we decided to "try" (within the budget/practical) to get a sporty SUV/wagon...in the 2nd hand market only...

i would very much like to hear all ur views/comments on the choices

1. XC90 2.5T (hear a fellow forumer with a 325 got chiat by a suppED up version)
2. Forrester 2.0/2.5T ( heard it handles better than the airtrek)
3. Legacy 2.0/2.5T sportswagon (the new 2.5T version has 250bhp 0-100 6.5s)
4. Audi A4 1.8T avant / Passat variant

turbo cars has more Modding potential... hence the above choices...

as for the 2nd car.... anybody knows any of the 8 that wants to sell their M3 cab? :)

350Z is good man, unfortunately 2 seater.

One option is actually get a smallish hatchback like Honda Jazz or Peugeot 206 + a Coupe

theres a lot of marques tat offers proper 2+2 capacity for both coupe/cabs... i chose the bimmer... have never regretted so far... n my definition of 2+2 means 2 normal adults can fit comfortably behind...so as far to how old ur kid can grow... so long that neither u or ur kid(s) are super big/tall... ur ok. :lol2:

from all my experiences... the the heart always WINS ... so long the head is willing /able to compromise,,, :lol2: :lol2: :lol2:

good luck to us both...

Re: How many of you own one car only and its a 2-door BMW?

Hi guys, saw a 325 coupe and fell in love with it. I am driving a sedan for the last 7yrs and my next ride would be a coupe before the family grow bigger. The 325 coupe or the A5 would be my choice.

Sick and tired of 4 doors. Infact 80% of the time, it is only my wifey and me in the car. :( So I decided since buying a E92 or E60 also deprciate that much, might as well pay for a nice drive and ride. :laughlik:

Not completely true.

A 2-door car is one that you can own while you're still relatively young and also later on when your kids have flown the nest. My elder brother who is in his fifties changed from his BMW E39 to a Merc CLK because his kids have gone overseas for studies and mostly, he drives alone. I can foresee myself having a nice 2-door to drive around in my sunset years, but perhaps by then I won't need to have a powerful engine.
