1st: Reset Transmission. I understand there is some settings or timing thingy where it can be reset to default. This will result in a smoother gear shifting and minimise frequency of the hard brake come to total stop jerk.
2nd: Reprogram, I guess to update firmware or something like that. Seems to be better for awhile
But then if problems persists, get the workshop or PML to give the transmission the once over again. Not necessarily that the gearbox must be replaced. An ATF change might do the trick though.

Earlier today I went to a pro-BMW workshop, a sitesponser, with my problem, was told a $150 reprogramming should do the trick. The workshop told me it was a success, however during the journey home, the slight gentle jerks during breaking just before a complete halt return, seems like it has problems during down shifting of gear. The workshop told me to try for a few days. And break for a solid 15seconds at traffic lights??
On a side note,
Changed nology sparrk plugs for $160 w labour
BMC air filter for $130
PIAA wiper blades for $119 ( wipers were real hazard to driving in the rainy season now)
Also they said my top and bottom oil gaskets are leaking, quote me about $750 to replace
And some water hoses leaking too another 2-300$$$.
I guess thanks to delrosa81 I can officially be part of this 320i repair journal haha:woowooo::woowooo::woowooo:

GB in my E39 uplorry 2 mths ago. Still engage & got drive. It got slower & slower & ..........delrosa81;713434 said:Hmmm but I feel BMW slush boxes are never absolutely seamless. When it is brand new, the shifts are really seamless but once you use it for awhile, the gear shifting would get more pronounced. The jerk forward when U come to a complete stop might be an indication of a problem.
But the real problem for me came when I noticed the reverse gear would delay in engaging. I noticed that when I engaged reverse, the transmission would take at least 2 to 3 seconds before it engages reverse. When it comes to a day where the transmission does not engage then the transmission have "died".
My top and bottom gaskets was also replaced, the radiator hoses as well.
Welcome to the club!

Seems bmw auto transmission cannot last for very long.

Subject of GB lifespan has been subject of discussion for the longest time. There is no firm answer.E90-320i;714193 said:i think its 130,000 - 150,000 Km. But proper maintenance can prolong the life. I will be replacing gearbox oil and pan/filter every 40,000 Km, due to constant city traveling. If i am not mistaken even the Honda civic FD series gearbox requires the same sort of maintenance. So its not just BMW, its the modern high performance gearbox characteristics
