PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

Hi fellow bro & sis,

Not sure if anyone had experienced this before.

I sent my car to Kg Arang this morning for 2nd oil service (mileage 49k) and also asked them to check inaccurate oil level sensor (I felt) and hard brake pedal in the morning. The CSA just called me and said they found sludge began to form in the engine oil that was causing the oil level sensor to be inaccurate! They drained out 6 litre of oil instead of 4.2 litre needed:whythis: It will take them 2 days to flush and clean the oil sump, rocker box and other components, etc. and no replacement car is available:furious: I asked for explaination for the sludge forming and he said it may be due to the frequent short distance driving pattern I have (not reaching optimum engine temperature):screwedu: :wtf:

Thought of sharing this lousy encounter with fellow forumers...

Re: PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

no, it is from poor quality engine oil and/or lack of servicing

2 days is bullshit unless they are physically removing them which i seriously doubt.

6 litres? did you top up with different brand oils? like a mineral mixed with synthetic?

No, I only top up with BMW oil bought from PML! Told him off that the oil is lousy or the service interval was wrong! Yes, 2 days is rediculous but he gave the excuse that it cannot be rushed as they need to clean each single parts bla bla bla...:(

Re: PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

so what they are saying is, PML oil is no good for start stop driving? So why do they sell it?

I bet the oil has never been changed. OR, something else is in the oil, like water. Have you seen it, was it white?

if they are cleaning everyhting, means they are removing the parts. big job to remove the sump. More likely they are putting an engine flush additive and running your car for a few hours, then draining and top up with fresh oil

engine temp and short driving has nothing at all to do with it. I only use my lawn mower a few times per year, the oil is brand new still. so how?

Re: PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

From the service booklet, the oil was changed once at 24k unless PML cheated on that. No I did not get to see the oil they drained. This will be in the record and I will insist them to change the oil at a shorter interval e.g. 15k from now next! My car is still covered under BSI till next May.

Re: PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

24k? no wonder. Run in oil is not as good, it probably started to die at 5k.

Re: PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

I did my oil change @ 25K mileage. hope I won't encounter what OYG bro encounter.

sorry to hear this bad feedback. OYG bro, just be patient. no point getting upset over this stuff. we all know how loosy PML service are, but those with BSI needs them.

hope you'll share with your updates 2 day later.

thanks for sharing.

Hi acupunch bro, thanks for the metal support! I will come back with an update once I get my car back. BTW, the hard brake pedal thingy was caused by a leaking check valve and they will replace it that should solve this problem.

Re: PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

a few have had that check valve issue, no biggie.

OYG, the car will be fine, no worries, im more annoyed at their answers than anything. You guys get fed bullshit

Hi phil, thanks and couldn't agree more about PML's bullshit!

Re: PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

In Singapore driving conditions, I will change oil every 7,500km. 24,000km is way too loooooong.

Re: PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

wow sludge like !!!! ouch..maybe contaminated or came into contact with water ! suggest change oil more frequently like half distance every 12k !

Re: PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

Hmmz 25K service interval is way too long, what oil they use can last so long? Or the engine design is so clean and running so cold that engine oil does not deteriate at all and last till 25K? I think its more for temperate countries. My E90 service intervals is 12K and I am not following it at all. I just did my oil change today at 9000km. (My virgin oil change) and the oil was so damn dirty man. I cant imagine using it for 25000km, sludge sure start to form one.......I think 10K is more reasonable and healthy for ur engine man.

Re: PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

for e90 330,i did oil change at 2000km and every 8000km.25000km is really bullshit unless you selling the car before 25,000km.

for e90 355,i did oil change again at 2000km with ows turbo racing oil.i am considering oil change at 6000km interval, cause the turbo engine is running hotter and the turbo are cooled by the engine oil.

yeah bro fully agreed on this. 25000km intervals are really bullshit, with our hot climate and driving conditions, really cannot leh, thats why for recent batches of E90s including mine, they have adjusted down to 12000km only. and I still think its way too high. gotta do mine every 5000 to 8000km. Its a habit la hehehehe :)

Re: PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

change every 10000km and stick to it. dont bother wat the computer tells u.

oil and oil filter is cheaper than long term engine wear n tear items.

Re: PML told me the engine oil began to become sludge!!!

I got my car back from PML on last Friday instead of Saturday they originally told me. They drained the oil, clean the sump and parts and flushed the engine with some kind of chemical or detergent and top up with new oil. The oil level sensor is working normally now (I hope and keep my fingers crossed). The engine sounds a lot sweeter now. They also replaced the check valve for the braking system and the brake pedal no is no longer hard in the morning:lol2: :lol2:

In any event, I will ignore the OBC and oil service interval message and will change oil at 10k's interval.

I also have the "Hard" brake pedal in the morning. My car only coming to 3 months old and have the check valve spoilt? alamak so lousy man.....:furious:

Hi accupunch bro, thanks for your concern! From this experience, strongly suggest to send the car to PML or outside workshop to check if anyone encountered frequent "low engine oil" prompt after several top-up within weeks. This is to make sure the oil is still in good state and not causing the oil level sensore to malfunction.
