Question for the Forumers

Clap clap clap, Wobbles. Trust me, this beats thinking of what tyres to change or which workshop to go or which wheel is cheap and good.....

The answer is a minimum of three times. Answer lies in drawing of decision trees. Label the cars 1 to 12.

First weigh, put 1-4 on one side of the scale and 5-8 on the other....

I am stuck with if 5-8 is heavier and if 3,6,9 is heavier vs 1,2,5 - why either 12,6 is fake? why was 3 and 5 eliminated from the equation. Can elaborate? Just curious.

Sludge, usually.

I find my hand written diagrams easier to understand leh... your question is answered in the 3 diagrams :)

If 5-8 heavier after the first weigh, you eliminate 9-12.

Second weigh, you weigh 1,2,5 against 3,6,9 knowing that 9 is real. If 3,6,9 is heavier....

~ 9 is real
~ 4, 7 and 8 are real too
~ 5 is real, cause now 5 is on the lighter side, but first round was on the heavier side.
~ similarly, 3 has to be real, cause 3 was on the lighter side on the first weigh, and now 3 is on the heavier side

After the second round of weighing, these are still inconclusive:

~ 1 & 2 could be a lighter fake
~ 6 could be a heavier fake

Re: Question for the Forumers

Here's an easy one:

You need to pay your worker for the next 7 days with a gold bar. The gold bar is divided into 7 equal but connected sections. You must give them a piece of gold at the end of every day.

You are allowed to break the gold bar into only 3 pieces, how do break it to pay your worker equally and daily?

Gold bar....must be yim jim with the worker...not an ounce more.....

block to be divided into 7 segments...but cut into 3 sections...2 segments / 2 segments / 2 segment / 1 segment....= 7 segments

Day one: pay with the 1 segment. Worker has one segment.

Day two: pay with 2 segments and request for the 1 segment back, worker now has two segments.

Day three: pay with the single segment again. worker now has three segments

Day four: pay with another 2 segment piece, and ask for the 1 segment piece back. Worker now has 4 segments.

Day five: pay with the single segment. They now have 5 segments.

Day 6: pay with the last ‘2 segment’ piece and ask for the single segment back. Worker now has 6 segments.

Day 7: pay with the single segment. They now have 7 segments.

On track, but you have cut the gold block into 4 pieces instead. Can only cut into three pieces.

But you are getting there....

ok....the block is 7 segments long....

you make cut at 2nd segment mark...cut 1 (2 segments long)

you make cut at 4th segment mark...cut 2 (2 segments long)

you make cut at 6th segment mark...cut 3....(2 segments long)

last 1 cm is the single segment....
3 cuts.... 4 pieces....

Re: Question for the Forumers

same question to you kenn....

a block of gold... 7 segments long... how to cut it by 2 cuts but still pay your worker equally 7 days 1 segment each.....

Cut it into 3 pieces, 1, 2 and 4 segments

Day 1 - Give 1 segment
Day 2 - Give 2 segment bar ask for 1 segment back. Worker has 2 segments.
Day 3 - Give 1 segment. Worker has three.
Day 4 - Give 4 segment ask for 1 + 2 back. Worker keep the 4 segment portion.
Day 5 - Give 1 segment. Worker has 5 segments.
Day 6 - Give 2 segment ask for 1 segment back. Worker has 6 segments.
Day 7 - Give the last segment

correct.... so clever!!!!

misread your original question....3 pieces NOT 3 cuts.....

so careless...booo boo mee....FAIL!!!! FML!!!!

Re: Question for the Forumers

There is a garage with a door (closed) and 3 AMG wagons inside. Outside the garage there are 3 switches, connected to the AMG's engines. You may manipulate the switches as you wish, but you can only open the garage door once to enter. Upon entrance, you need to immediately identify each switch with its AMG wagon. How?

Yes, Jason turned around and asked me on the same question.

Re: Question for the Forumers

There is another way of stacking up to cut the bar (think out of the box)

1) Cut into two pieces - 3 segment and 4 segment
2) Stack the 3 segment over the 4 segment, cut at the 2 segments intersection, which now you will have 3 pieces of 2 segments and 1piece of 1 segment.
3) Stack up 3 pieces of 2 segments over each other, and cut into half, which now you will have 6 pieces of 1 segments. 1 for each day!

Haha. Creative thinking.

Assumption that the engines are COLD....

Turn on switch "1" for few minutes. Then turn it off

Turn on switch "2"; Open the door to the garage look inside....

Whichever engine is fired up is linked to switch 2, then touch the other engine bonnets.

The HOT bonnet / engine (but now powered off) is linked to switch 1,

The COLD bonnet / engine is linked to switch 3.
