Radiator change - E90

Re: Radiator change - E90

apple to apple comparison, the disparity can be between 10% and 35% in my experience.

There will be some who r similar to PML's or MA's pricing but the job gets done right now with all stocks n parts available.

I know I've certainly paid the max. But given apple-to-apple comparison, from your experiences, how much (%) is the difference for parts and for labour?

I suggest u call up any Stockies and check the prices for the parts as stated in ur bill.
Call up any workshop and ask labour fees to change the parts.
These two phone calls will give u a good idea how much difference in price

Re: Radiator change - E90

Thanks bros for all your inputs! Certainly helps me understand the car repair market better. I guess you'll never really know what need to be changed until and unless the workshop mechanic make his detailed inspection. And different competent mechanics may still provide different assessments.
So my lesson learnt at the end of the day:
1. know which are the alternative honest, trustworthy workshops (who doesn't overdo or overcharge)
2. having a sense of the price differences between seemingly same parts/labour

Re: Radiator change - E90

A typical scenario - dunno what is to be changed, CHANGE ALL !!!

Get what I meant?

Re: Radiator change - E90

replaced the whol radiator system at PML last year for $3k+

Re: Radiator change - E90

hi Aaron,
can you pm me the address of this JB WS that you went and the mechanic to look for ? Many thanks in advance !!

Re: Radiator change - E90

BM weak point is their radiator. Best to change outside if pass warranty unless you have deep pocket and want to have PML warranty for the job. Price too far apart from inputs of various bro. But i would avoid JB as i have heard too many dis-satisfied stories.
My 5 cents.

Re: Radiator change - E90

I have a question.
As I am not tech savvy, in a situation like yours, how would I know what parts to purchase before heading down to JB?
Assuming I am buying the spare parts from eng soon?

Or do I drive in to JB to have them check it and drive out to buy the parts and return again to have it fix? That would be a logical thinking. No?

Re: Radiator change - E90

To know the difference is easy: just called up Eng Soon to ask how much is the part cost for your coolant pump electric and radiator, and compare it with your PML bill.

They are easily marked up to double over standard Eng Soon parts costs.

How much would a reputable BMW specialist workshop (say the site sponsors) charge for the same? 10%, 20% or 50% lower?

Re: Radiator change - E90

Need to learn more about your car, which can only be acquired over time esp for used car.

Like you said it, obvious choice is to go two trips to JB - first for diagnosis, come back get the parts, then go ahead to fix it.

Another option is bring your car to local workshops here first, compare prices, and what the mechanic advise you to change. If the price is low, its easier just to do it here in Singapore.

If the cost is high to you, then head north to get it done in JB to save some $. But you definitely will spend more time initially running around.

ur question is quite general man.....
assuming that u actually know what is wrong with ur car,
u should call up a few stockies and ask for a quote.
sometimes they maybe out of stock.
buy the parts and go to any workshop in SG or JB that u may prefer.
call up and ask for estimated quote to repair before going.
save u the most time and $
just do ur homework like I did

Re: Radiator change - E90

Aaron, u seem like "old bird" in workshop and parts sourcing. :) Would u mind PM me your usual stockists and workshops? Thanks in advance!

Re: Radiator change - E90

After experiencing the unfriendly pricing at PML recently, and feeling like a radish, I seek advice from my good friend (aka Google) to find out what is the cost of the parts on the (global) market.

Sharing my finding below:
1. PML parts cost = SGD1804.90 (before GST)
2. Went to a US stockist website (ECS) and order the exact same part#. Cost w/ shipping = SGD1366 (using USD/SGD=1.3)
So the difference is about SGD439 (~30%), which may still be justified since parts from PML come with 2 year warranty. Essentially paying for insurance premium. Also, I presume the US stockist pricing is lower than our local stockists.

However, the labour cost of SGD683 (before GST) is certainly higher than any other workshops. I'll guess about 30 - 50% higher?

Re: Radiator change - E90

Did you check with Moto-aire ?

Re: Radiator change - E90

Do a SEARCH here. The name will pop up.

Bought the stuff I need from Eng Soon, drove down to bmw specialist JB workshop. Shopped around. Eat cheap lunch. Pump cheap petrol. Head back SG.

Labour charged was RM 3xx. He even found a lock nut for me coz a SG tyre shop took it and forgot to put back into the slot behind and i only realised when i reached there! WTF. This is the reason why he took 6 hours, spent 2 hours trying to find the damn lock nut.

Total cost estimate SGD $1300? Didn't bother to calculate coz confirm cheaper then SG. Oh and btw the cost is for both the whole radiator and brakes assembly.
