Schools in Singapore

Re: Schools in Singapore

Very interesting ppl u all... I wanna meet you guys someday.. wonder how a 2 hour kopi session will turn out :p

I think there's something we're missing with our child... school/education is not everything. These days a degree doesn't even guarantee a job. Fuck, even with a degree some don't want the job (true story) and rather rot at home. Why? Because KNN paid so much for degree refuse to accept jobs under $3K/mth.

A lot of kids go through tertiary education and come out being lost. They went to school to study and get a paper, not to LEARN. There's a major difference between the studying and learning. They were just following instructions or following the crowd. When they finally start working they have no passion in their work and are clueless even till 30+ years old and often ask "what am I here for?" Sadly I think this makes up quite a majority of our current working population (those born in 70s and 80s).

Which parent realizes the importance of building a child's passion, mental diversity and well being and actually act on it?

We are becoming what I call Stephen Hawking era. All we do is sit down and let our brains (and mouth) work. Our hands and legs are just accessories to carry us around. Hopefully kids nowadays participate in sports and some other CCAs where they can develop their passion in other areas. A lot of these untaught skills (art, music, cooking, handicraft) may come in useful in their lives later. You may not realize it, but it is true.

Ask yourself:
- Can your kid cook? Cook != use microwave oven hor.
- Can your kid do housework? Iron clothes, clean the toilet?
- Can they fix the bulb? Let alone fix a car?
- Can they mend the broken chair?
- Can they plant their own crops given a garden? (True story: my uncle's maid from Timur grew a fucking pumpkin twice the size of my head from his tiny garden. I was shocked.)

True maybe an artist or musician does not earn much, but it does not mean they aren't happier or live a fuller life?

Note being top in school doesn't mean the child is mentally sound. If tomorrow he/she go skydiving from level 4 of school block, that's NOT mentally sound.

jasonmaxima, that's another area I think we are lacking here - language. We suck at writing or expressing ourselves because we neither focus on English or our mother tongue. A lot of us still write/speak broken English and the peer influence makes it worse.

Not that I am not proud of Singlish as a local culture, but sometimes we just need to write properly lor. Tiak tiak or piak piak not everywhere in the world understand.

Our next door neighbour (M'sia) chinese will easily beat us at mother tongue. Just slightly down south the angmors will do better at English. We're neither here nor there. Half fuck bucket.

I can cook (roast lamb), I can sew, I can unchoke a toilet bowl and sink....etc

I can change engine oil, transmission fluids, change suspension, change brake pads, bleed my brake system...changing tires is too easy peasy for me.

I can iron my work shirt and pants.

I am not a GPA 4.0 with A+ grades.... but I still look up to no names MWentioned and CB F13 driver who makes my legs.... Wobbles

Re: Schools in Singapore

Bringing up children is all about helping them to unleash the potential in them. As some of you have said, certification is not everything. However this is what the society, not all but mostly, look for when it comes to employment. I would say we try our best to nuture our kids and also in still proper values and life skills. Main thing is we must give them a certain amount of free space and time. Respect them as an individual. Give them plenty of love! Even if they do not become some big shot but at least they will not become a parasite in the society.

Wei wei, I'm proud to say that I can & do express myself well - and I don't necessarily need to put on a fake American/Ang Moh accent to do it.

And, if English fails to do the job, there's always the good old SAF-taught, tried & tested: KNNNNBCC.B DLLMC.H direct approach.... :lol2:

Are you a parent yourself?
Else, you should know what some are talking about.
It's about sharing in this open forum. One does not need to justify or prove that they practice what they post.
I'm taking points like Wobbles on what suits my situation.

Re: Schools in Singapore

I hate kids....period

Re: Schools in Singapore

Does the schools expect the children to know stuffs that are not taught in schools but only in enrichment classes?
Or are they trying to encourage young kids to self learn more things that are relevant to the topics learnt in school, encouraging them to do research and self study? (assuming found in google?)

Are those things found in the exams?

Re: Schools in Singapore

Re: Schools in Singapore

A friend of mine came back from Germany and said there, the primary school nearest to your house will write or call to remind you to register your child for elementary school and will harass you if you did not meet the deadline.

In Sg, parents queue up for 3 nights to register their kids who know nothing about the process and run around like its a playground and then when its announced that they did not get in, the parents and kid will wail and cry like someone died. I wonder whether the kid even knows why he/she is crying..
