Re: Schools in Singapore
Very interesting ppl u all... I wanna meet you guys someday.. wonder how a 2 hour kopi session will turn out
I think there's something we're missing with our child... school/education is not everything. These days a degree doesn't even guarantee a job. Fuck, even with a degree some don't want the job (true story) and rather rot at home. Why? Because KNN paid so much for degree refuse to accept jobs under $3K/mth.
A lot of kids go through tertiary education and come out being lost. They went to school to study and get a paper, not to LEARN. There's a major difference between the studying and learning. They were just following instructions or following the crowd. When they finally start working they have no passion in their work and are clueless even till 30+ years old and often ask "what am I here for?" Sadly I think this makes up quite a majority of our current working population (those born in 70s and 80s).
Which parent realizes the importance of building a child's passion, mental diversity and well being and actually act on it?
We are becoming what I call Stephen Hawking era. All we do is sit down and let our brains (and mouth) work. Our hands and legs are just accessories to carry us around. Hopefully kids nowadays participate in sports and some other CCAs where they can develop their passion in other areas. A lot of these untaught skills (art, music, cooking, handicraft) may come in useful in their lives later. You may not realize it, but it is true.
Ask yourself:
- Can your kid cook? Cook != use microwave oven hor.
- Can your kid do housework? Iron clothes, clean the toilet?
- Can they fix the bulb? Let alone fix a car?
- Can they mend the broken chair?
- Can they plant their own crops given a garden? (True story: my uncle's maid from Timur grew a fucking pumpkin twice the size of my head from his tiny garden. I was shocked.)
True maybe an artist or musician does not earn much, but it does not mean they aren't happier or live a fuller life?
Note being top in school doesn't mean the child is mentally sound. If tomorrow he/she go skydiving from level 4 of school block, that's NOT mentally sound.
