Citing an oversupply of pilots and slow growth, Singapore Airlines (SIA) will be letting 76 pilots go before the expiry of their fixed-term contracts by June 30 this year.

SIA said in a statement today that pilots had previously been let go only when their contracts expired.

The Airline added that it will provide assistance to help the released pilots pursue employment opportunities within the SIA Group and with other airlines.

Previously implemented measures to address the surplus of pilots include voluntary no-pay leave and the suspension of the cadet pilot recruitment program.

More details are available in the press release below:

SIA to release pilots on fixed-term contracts

Singapore Airlines has taken the difficult decision to advance the planned release of 76 pilots who are employed on fixed-term contracts. The Airline had previously been releasing pilots only upon expiry of their contracts.

The pilots are expected to be released by June 30, 2013. The Airline will assist them to pursue employment opportunities within the SIA Group and with other airlines.

Singapore Airlines currently has a surplus of pilots to its operational requirements, as the global financial crisis of 2009-10 had resulted in excess capacity and slower-than-expected growth.

The Airline had earlier implemented other measures to address the surplus, such as voluntary no pay leave and the suspension of cadet pilot recruitment.

Pilots employed on fixed-term contracts make up about 4 per cent of Singapore Airlines' total pilots' workforce.

Wah. SIA ask the pilots to go fly kites. Power.

Well for a start.

What happens if a bus breaks down on the road? The bus driver will likely tell his/her pax to alight the bus and wait for the next one.

Imagine u as a pax in the aircraft and the aircraft breaks down in flight. Do u expect the pilot to ask u to alight and wait for the next aircraft that passes by?

These pilots are trained professionals that are not Ur typical local bus drivers. These pilots are trained and thru many years of training and flight experiences to handle situations that non pilots will not be able to handle in that situation.

If you think that u by owning a fast car can handle a jet, think again.

just my two cents.

Re: SIA to let 76 pilots go......................

If aircraft breaks down in flight all die. Nothing to do with the pilot.

Heard its on auto pilot from one end to the other followed by the ILS kicking in for landing.

Captain is there to announce the weather in broken english and disrupt your movies ......

Nothing like the stress bus drivers have plying the crowded Singapore roads ......

SIA losing the edge as premium airlines......Competitor is catching up....so much body hugging boobs showing kebaya can do...

Re: SIA to let 76 pilots go......................

As big a cynic and as wry a skeptic as I am, calling pilots 'higher paid bus drivers' is, IMHO, a tad unfair; akin to calling lawyers 'someone that gets paid to do a lot of talking' and teachers 'someone that just does a lot of reading aloud from text books' and doctors as 'someone that just acts cool with a stethoscope hung around his neck' and mini$tars as 'someone that just gets paid a lot to come up with short-sighted bad policies' - OK, so the last bit is true....

Each and every profession, IMHO, be it from a 'lowly' bus driver aka bus captain aka service leader aka illegal PRC stop-work instigator to a higher paid 'flying-bus driver' aka pilot carries with it its own challenges and demands, and should command - or at the very least - elicit - the appropriate respect (if not so much for the vocation, then at least for the person serving that role) as it inherently deserves.

Heck, this may apply even to the world's oldest profession - I never say ask Kenntona :) :lol2:

I used to have great respect for Kennanconda for his professionalism in this trade until I realize that his tongue is only used for talking. He is no difference from many politician.

most of the flights you could see the plane descending on a straight path its nose pointing towards wind direction,
this is due to very strong cross winds and requires skill to land as the pilot will need to "kick"
the rudder and use ailerons to maintain the correct drift
I very doubtful the planes on the clips are crazy drunk pilots
