Mr Goh in 2003's SIA pilot strike, "No group of employees in Singapore should act without regard for the impact on others, or hold the company and fellow workers hostage to their narrow self-interests."

Senior Lee warned the recalcitrant pilots that he would "break heads" if necessary to stop potential industrial action against SIA.

Facts.

...and the point is....?

...However, without doubt, yes, agree control does gives stability. This control can only be applied in small society like ours....possibly..

Re: SMRT drivers refused to start work

Garmen reaping what they sowed! Letting Foreigners in and treating them better than Singaporeans but end up get bitten in the hand.

Empathize those passengers who suffered the endless wait for the buses all because garmen buay kan.

Re: SMRT drivers refused to start work

i think there's something good out of this episode, that is not to be too dependent on FT.
they strike, we are screwed, especially when its something to do with public transport or any other crucial services.

smrt hired them bcos they are cheaper labour cost but this is way more than what they can earn doing the same job in china.
they get smarter when they come SG and demand more.
never-ending if to give in cos there's never enough.
then again, the bus driving hours pretty shitty.
was chatting with a sbs bus malaysian driver, kpkb abt his working hours, rest time....sign contract liao...LL...etc.

Re: SMRT drivers refused to start work

the road today more safe......

...possibly yes, quotas for numbers allowed in ...maybe gone overboard...

...but juz 4 this case....dun think the affected Drivers think they r being treated better.....objectively.

....It's equal pay they r pursuing ....based on equal work with their peers...

...however, we r not totally able 2 see the whole picture ... Accommodation, be it dorms or buildings etc & other perks not reported, r cost to company as well...

....but, snow does not build over nite too...

I have to agree that we do not know which side is blacker...

But if we look back at the atrocities of these PRC SBS drivers over the past one year and until the gentle protest today, the garmen probably had time to react to tackle the root of the problem before today. Yet the focus have so often been about rising Coe, increasing or revising erp, increasing taxis available on the road during peak hours over the next few years to perhaps cause more congestion etc etc and none of which translates to solving our daily frustrations but only to add on to it.

My sis actually witnessed one of the accidents where a PRC driven SBS bus hit an old lady crossing a junction on green man and dragged her for a distance. She heard the old lady's screaming in such agony that she had a few sleepless nights! Guess wat, she was crossing the same junction and was just in front of that unlucky old lady!

Just like how MRT breakdowns have to blow up to such a massive scale and become national issue before actions are taken.

Well as Ken has highlighted, Senior Lee would have reacted very differently.

Re: SMRT drivers refused to start work

Malaysians get psid more maybe because they could speak English, Mandarin, Malay snd other dialects and more familiar with Singapore. For that I think its fair to pay them more.

The point is the CONSISTENCY of treatment to the same issue, or the lack of.

Both are GLCs, both situations arised from unhappiness within the employees. Both threatened to skip work - aka "strike".

The difference? SIA is a global brand name.

Re: SMRT drivers refused to start work

Malaysian are much better drivers than those ah tiongs anytime. In terms of culture and language, they are also MUCH closer to us than ah tiongs.

If a company has to pay the same salary for malaysian and ah tiong, they will prefer malaysian as it is way MUCH easier to get work permit, S Pass or wudever visa required to hire them.

The message to those ah tiongs must be clear; You are cheap labour, not a sought-after talent. Go work in foxconn if you are not happy with the salary in SMRT.

Re: SMRT drivers refused to start work

any deference to their strike/protest will attract copycats all around Sg...

Re: SMRT drivers refused to start work

of coz ... the word 'strike' carry severe penalty hor ... dun play play

If we are heading down to playing with semantics, then "car modifications" should be termed "visible and invisible beautifications of the vehicle".

Re: SMRT drivers refused to start work
