seems like there's no stopping them.... next year United!!

It's too early to call because Drogba & Essien's twin absence during African Cup will cause Chelsea to drop some points. Also, Man City could force another draw this weekend to make it 8 in a row. I predict a close finish between Man Utd & Chelsea, with MU pipping Chelsea in BPL and Chelsea winning against Barca in CL.

FA Cup Semis - Man Utd vs Man City, Aston Villa vs Blackburn

World Cup - France not seeded, but Argentina is.

By JERÉ LONGMAN Dec. 3 (New York Times) -- It is anyone’s guess how the 32 teams in the 2010 World Cup will be grouped by the draw Friday in South Africa, but one thing is for sure: the event will elicit sightings of things as far-fetched as U.F.O.’s and the Virgin Mary’s image on a potato chip. Soccer luminaries, with the help of the honorary hostess Charlize Theron, will pull plastic balls out of pots to determine the eight first-round groupings of four teams each. Someone will inevitably claim that the draw was rigged. No proof? No problem. Not since "Forrest Gump" have table tennis balls supposedly been so vulnerable to manipulation and sleight of hand. Television networks around the world will be on alert. They will replay the video forward and backward, in regular speed and slow motion, seeking evidence of plots and schemes, as if this were a sporting equivalent of the Zapruder film.

At the draw for the 1990 World Cup in Italy, Sophia Loren picked a ball that placed the United States in the host team’s group. Considering that the Americans had not played in the World Cup in 40 years, this struck some as akin to putting the Yankees in the same group as the winner of the Little League World Series. None other than the soccer legend Diego Maradona claimed the draw was rigged to favor the host Italians over defending champion Argentina. Those who saw conspiracy speculated that Loren had magnetized her rings to pick a certain magnetic ball out of the pot.

At the draw for the 2006 World Cup in Germany, the television network Sky Italia thought it saw duplicity in the way the former German soccer star Lothar Matthäus selected Italy’s group. The station claimed that the balls had been heated and cooled so that Matthäus knew which teams he was selecting as he placed Italy in a daunting group with the United States, the Czech Republic and Ghana. "The Italians are mad if they think that," Matthäus said at the time. "That is utter nonsense." Considering that Italy won the World Cup that year, Matthäus had a point.
Of course, soccer’s world governing body, known by its acronym FIFA, steadfastly denies that high jinks are involved. Outside experts say there is no proof that the process is illusory. "We are not David Copperfield, and Siegfried and Roy," Guido Tognoni, a former spokesman for FIFA, said in Las Vegas at the draw for the 1994 World Cup.

Yet conspiracy theories abound. In 2005, the issue was part of a final exam in a cryptology course at the University of Virginia. Part of the suspicion comes because soccer is a global sport that evokes national passions, said Mike Woitalla, the executive editor of Soccer America magazine. Americans do not usually root as a nation in a sporting sense, cheering instead for our alma maters and local professional sports teams. The Olympics are an exception, and the Super Bowl draws more interest in the commercials than the game. But much of the rest of the world reaches a fever pitch over soccer. "In America, you might have fans from Boston thinking they were robbed by a bad call, but in soccer it’s an entire country feeling that somebody treated them unfairly," Woitalla said. "It’s a fan’s feelings multiplied by millions."

Conspiracy theories regarding soccer are likely to flourish readily in countries where authorities and elites have often failed the public, said Andrei Markovits, a professor of politics and German studies at the University of Michigan. "I wouldn’t be surprised to see a much greater notion of conspiracy in countries like Argentina, Italy and Greece and much less in places like Sweden, Norway, Britain and Germany," said Markovits, author of the forthcoming book, "Gaming the World: How Sports are Reshaping Global Politics and Culture."

FIFA also has opened itself to charges of deception by arbitrarily changing the rules of the draw from one World Cup to the next. One time, performances in the two most recent World Cups are given priority in seeding teams. Another time, it is the three most recent World Cups that count. International rankings wax and wane in importance. Next time, who knows, the standard might be appearances on "Dancing with the Stars."

And it does not help matters that Friday’s draw comes amid a sprawling match-fixing scandal involving club teams in Europe and soccer officials. "I hate conspiracy theories," Markovits said. "They’re an easy way out for people seeking explanations for complex things. That said, I don’t think the draw is rigged, but I’m less likely to completely dismiss it as a crackpot simplification than I would have been three weeks ago." In truth, the World Cup draw is not as entirely random as the weekly Powerball lottery. FIFA seeks geographic diversity in each of the eight four-team groups. And it gives the host nation a top seed, believing that local interest is boosted if the host team stays alive. No home team has failed to advance beyond the first round.

For the 2010 World Cup, the host, South Africa, will have a top seed even though it is ranked 86th in the world. Thus it will avoid such powers as Brazil, Germany and Argentina in group play. "I never thought any of the draws were rigged," said Bruce Arena, who coached the United States in the 2002 and 2006 World Cups. "The only thing that seems odd to me is how the host country gets decent draws. They never end up in the Group of Death." Well, almost never. Arena also coached the United States at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Upon realizing that the opening match was against Argentina, he lamented about American naïveté, saying, "We’re too stupid to fix a draw."

City of Manchester in joy as Man City beats Chelsea 2-1. That means Man Utd is trailing only by 2 points. Tevez did Man Utd the favour by scoring the winning free kick. Weird to see Carrick played centreback and Fletcher as right back.

Spurs failed to win away at Goodison Park. Everton was down 0-2, until Saha and Cahill equalised. Defoe missed a last min penalty.

Liverpool infertile again.

Re: The Barclays Premiership / Champions League Thread

All big teams lost points, except for Aston Martin and Arsene's Gunners.

Chelsea drew 3-3 at home with Everton
Man Utd lost 0-1 at home to Aston Martin
Liverpool lost 1-2 at home to Arsenal
Spurs lost 0-1 at home to Wolves
Man City drew 3-3 away at Bolton

Chelsea will have problem without Essien and Drogba, as well as Mikel Obi and Salomon Kalou soon. Conceded 10 goals in the last 4 games. 4 games without a win.

Man Utd has the biggest issue - Berbatov, Owen, Giggs and Valencia are just not good enuff to fill Ronaldo's shoes. Worse, the backline looks so depleted with Fletcher playing as right back. Previous game was Carrick as centre back !!!

Liverpool must have hated Arshavin.

Spurs can thrash Wigan 9-1, but cannot beat Wolves.

Looks like a two-horse race from now on.....................

Arsenal manager criticises tactical fouls in 2-0 defeat Drogba double takes Blues back to top of the league. A FRUSTRATED Arsne Wenger said his Arsenal team were completely dominant" despite their 2-0 defeat to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge that pushed his side nine points off the pace at the top of the Premier League.

Two first-half goals from Didier Drogba, who also hit the bar, ensured Chelsea reclaimed first place in the table, two points ahead of Manchester United. Carlo Ancelotti, the Chelsea manager, hugged every Chelsea player as they left the pitch in gratitude after a week that has put the club under intense scrutiny in the wake of the John Terry scandal.

However, Wenger claimed his was the only team interested in playing attacking football and accused Chelsea of making sneaky fouls to break up play whenever Arsenal had the chance to build a quick attack. Arsenal's loss follows the 3-0 home defeat to Manchester United a week previously, and could prove fatal to Wenger's hopes of winning the title. Wenger said: "You have to congratulate Chelsea but we did not get a demonstration of football. But Chelsea were very efficient. We had mountains of possession and could not create it into a goal. We had 70 per cent of the possession. We were not running after the ball for 90 minutes. We were not in a position where we were dominated. We were always in an attacking position and had to risk things going wrong. Our spirit was great. I am completely happy with the performance and the spirit. We didn't turn up against Manchester United. When we got into it [against Chelsea] we were completely dominant.

"They are very experienced at the back. They make the foul at the right part of the pitch, in the middle of the pitch, to stop a counter-attack. A little push, not enough to be a yellow card. They have a lot of tricks and are very experienced. They do that very well. They got one or two decisions from the referee." Arsenal have a dismal record against Chelsea and United in recent games. In Arsenal's last nine games against their two biggest rivals, they have managed one draw and eight defeats. Wenger agrees Arsenal, who have now gone four games without a win in all competitions, cannot afford another slip when they host Liverpool on Wednesday. "We are not in the best position but we will not give up," he said. Drogba put Chelsea ahead after eight minutes from close range and added a second, his 22nd of a prolific season, with a fine run and finish a quarter of an hour later.

Ancelotti disagreed with Wenger's assessment that the better team lost. "We deserved to win," he said. "You cannot only speak about the game and only speak of possession. We were in control." Terry suffered a dead leg in the second half, but played on with his left thigh strapped. He will see the club's doctors today and
Ancelotti wants him to play against Everton on Wednesday. However, if he is not fit enough, he may be allowed time off to visit his wife, Toni, in Dubai.

Arsenal could face an FA investigation after an object that looked like a coin was thrown at Ashley Cole from the away section of the ground.

Re: The Barclays Premiership / Champions League Thread

I wonder whether I was watching the same match that Wenger was watching. Vermealen, Gallas and co were 2nd best to Drogba, Anelka and even Malouda. Chelsea punished Arsenal during their lapses of concentration early on and all they had to do was soak up an infertile Arsenal attack for the rest of the match. I'm not hoping for any silverware for Arsenal this season, just hoping that Fabregas doesn't leave the team after WC.

Re: The Barclays Premiership / Champions League Thread

disappointed with arsenal. they must learn to create fouls when necessary.

for the second goal, how did they let lampard run with the ball for so long and no one foul him?

The midfield still has a hole ever since Vieira left. No defensive mid to cover the gap. Against teams with strong midfields, they are lost.........

Re: The Barclays Premiership / Champions League Thread

wenger needs to change his kiam kana mentality and splurge on 1 or 2 world class strikers

Re: The Barclays Premiership / Champions League Thread

If Arsenal lose to Liverpool midweek..it would really be a 2 horse race.

The match of the season for the neutrals: Chelsea vs Man City on 27th Feb...confirm sibei sexciting match.

The real winner last weekend was Liverpool for the 4th place ... Man City lost, Aston Villa and Spurs drew.
Well done, Chelsea and Man U ... two horse race now.

Re: The Barclays Premiership / Champions League Thread

I rather Chelsea win than Man U win...I cannot stand Man U fans gloating. Since SG got less Chelsea fans, they are lesser of two evils. My logic FTW
