Re: This Brit said those take MRT are poor people
I think this Anton is tactless, and naughty, but the "stench" description has some validity.
I have heard ourselves commenting that some buses and trains are "smelly" because of FT/FW odours. Let's not kid ourselves and pretend that we have never heard that.
At times we are short of being crude and derogatory.
But come to think of it, most of us are Chinese, and the way we were brought up, not exactly tactful and civil.
Think about it - have you heard of "you still naughty, I will ask that Ah Poo Neh Neh to catch you?" You can replace Ah Poo Neh Neh and Baboo or Bayee and I guarantee you have been through this. Tell me you have not heard that...
When I was a teenager, I asked why my friends called our Malay friends KEOW THOR or HUAN NAH. He said dunno. Later stage I realise KEOW THOR means DIG SOIL (describing their affiliation with construction-related works). HUAN NAH refers to aborigines/natives, but most speaks with a negative connotation of uncivilised nature. Tell me you have not heard that...
Then we called our Indian friends KAY LENG or ORH PUAY in the army. At times, AH ORH. KAY LENG is fake dragon, and ORH PUAY or AH ORH denotes black skinned. We went through NS and even become friends after that despite calling these names. And AH NEH, or MAMA. Tell me you have not heard that...
And those jokes. See a Malay in a Merc? Ahmad. See an Indian besides a Merc? Wash car - where's his bicycle? Tell me you have not heard that...
We are all the same.
Just that some of us are more tactful on social media.
