Mine recently bought 2008 520XL also need to topup but not as bad as yours. Went to PM & said this is normal.
No choice go to JB "M-One"
They advise that for 5 series Black engine cover use 5W40, Silver engine cover use 0W40
Will try next servicing change to 5W40 original BMW engine oil at "M-One"

PML everything also say normal. But luckily they didn't do anything for you also, otherwise sure get tok. You can go to any outside workshop and try to troubleshoot the problem, cheaper also....

If top up is required around 8k km (after last oil change), it is normal. There is no diff btw 0w-40 or 5w-40.

Since yours is 4 pot, what was said might not be applicable.

By the way, for N52, it should be 5-30 with HTHS > 3.5.

Maybe it's just a blown head gasket only .....

if not? Shell Helix Ultra also can, buy the small 1 litre bottle to top up. But your ride quite new leh, how come so fast burn engine oil one? mine came on only after 20,000...i topped up and next day went to PML to change oil and then everything swee swee liao...

may have some truth to it....mine also 520i buddy, but so far after that one off incident 2 years ago? now all as per normal, and I change oil every 5 months even before it hits 10,000km....but then again, we never know man...now my headache is the right rear light assembly.... need to get the wirings grounded liao cos the connectors fried liao....sigh!

Today I go JB workshop M-One standing there to see they put 5W40 BMW original engine oil to the engine. This 520 engine only drink 4 and half lit oil.
I just want to confirm black cover engine really need to use 5W40 or not. Will update once I get the result.

No effect at 5W40 BMW original engine. Don't know what happen. Siean already at this car.
Trade in to PL & change new 520I F10 with good price. Got promotion. Getting the new car this coming Sat !

F10 520I at $ 230,800 all in. PI must be no business these month.
Also get high trade (i buy how much, they pay how much back to me, Heng la) for my existing 520I

Wrong, 0W and 5W has diff chemical spec (ex. boiling point, thickness, etc) hence there is a price difference.

General guidelines :
- new car with 3 years or less, 0W is recommended
- car > 3 years, use 5W (thicker I was told...)

For 40wt oil, who cares whether 5 or 0 as long as it is changed every 10k km.

For 30wt oil, it does matter. HTHS for O does not meet LL01FE/LL04 standard.

Ideally you should let your engine oil cool down before you top up. But i usually turn off engine then top up maybe 5mins later. Works for me.
