Weird Sound on my E90

Re: Weird Sound on my E90

Hi... The problem you sites is at constant speed and this is irrespective of engine and gear selection ... This is not tires or bearings because they do not produce sounds at a narrow speed band ... The only part that can cause this is the front propeller bearing which is the 3 rd item that rotates at road speed and the wear can cause resonance at a fix speed .. It is not expensive but seldom fails on the E90 ... Change this and you should resolve the problem .. Cheers

Hi Ryan75,

Yes agree that Rodney is good. I visit him every now and then and even service my car there. But he's kinda swamped with loads of appointments hence feel Paiseh to ask for an appointment to trouble-shoot leh :(

Will see how...currently

Hi,

Got my lower bumper portion sprayed at J's Magic...great service.....dropped car at 10am and picked it up after 3 hours.....nice job by Terry and Leslie.

coming back to the sound issue....today went to 3 sponsor workshops..to triple confirm...and all of them narrowed it down to the fact that it is the rear differential....causing different sounds at different speeds...also was informed that my E90 2006 320i does not have propeller bearings :(

:yikess:The cost to replace this problematic rear Diff is SDG 2K for a used one and a spanking SGD4K for brand new one...and the beauty is that they can't gurantee that it will not come back.....great stuff man.....:whythis::angry:

maybe i go rob a bank or something and then go buy a new car from PML.....

Re: Weird Sound on my E90

Hello .. Sorry u not solve yr prob but the front prob bearing is the output flange of the auto:
See
RealOEM.com   BMW E90 320i GA6HP19Z output
Costing some $400.
However if you are sure it is from the diff and get someone to drive and u sit at the rear to confirm.. Then change a new unit !! Recon differentials are not the solution ...!

Hi Chris,

Thanks again Bro, you seem very tech savvy...nice. Never heard any1mentioning this b4...learning new stuff....and nice details with the diagram...do you know where i can get this replaced? do you know if any1 has replaced this? worth exploring this solution.....

cheers Bro

Re: Weird Sound on my E90

Hello ... I understand how some noise can be small but real pain when it is a good car like the E90, but if u must get it solved... There u are down to Tyres, wheeel bearings, diff and flange bearings .. U start with the cheapest right? Since u eliminated Tyres and wheel bearings, and in yr first posting you were so sure it was not the diff, there is only flange or prop coupling universal joint that rotate at the road speed ... Nothing else does!

Some garage will hoist yr car on ramp and accelerate to 80kph to check the diff but still, wheels are not loaded and sound may not appear. Anyway, u need to hear for sure before taking action. No point to eliminate by $$$$.

Solutions:
Diff- can drain oil and refill and hear the sound
Prop uni joint- can dismantle and service by oiling
Flange- can change

Problem is the workshops we frequent here are very good but for standard part change... Nobody likes to troubleshoot ...make no $$ and spend time... U prob need to visit an old school workshop or auto specialist....

Hope this helps!

Re: Weird Sound on my E90

Thanks again for a quality Post and Reply Bro Chris,

Yes bro, tyres and front wheel bearings have been ruled out as i have changed them. I am sure that its not the rear diff as that sound is a constant sound and increases from 40km/h onwards, but this weird sound only appears at speeds of 75km/h-85km/h, and i have tried sitting at the back seat to ensure this and it seems that this weird sound is coming from the front (engine bay) while the rear diff constant sound is always from the back. However its kinda difficult for me to confute what the guys at the workshop say, as i am not an expert...but with the inputs like what you have posted at least i can now respond back to them.
What they keep saying is that this is rear diff and that the sound changes as different speeds and at the right speed it becomes audible as it hits the right pitch....being audible to us and becomes inaudible (sound disappears at speeds above 85km/h) as the pitch of the sound increases hence becoming inaudible to our ears.....(and that's physics)....

However with your valuable inputs....of the possibility of flange or prop coupling, i will re-vist the workshop for a second opinion. Also to add, i have drained and changed my rear diff oil (using 75W140 RedLine) but did not change anything...both rear diff constant Whining sound and also this new weird sound did not go away.

And agree with you, no one wants to troubleshoot...R2D is good (as Rodney help troubleshoot a few things for me previously) but does not have the time and bandwidth....as R2D is swamped with many cars....so i am still in search for this old school workshops....and will keep all posted.

Thanks again Chris and most definitely all your inputs really does help.....

Cheers.

If i remember correctly, MA has another differential oil which will solve differential noise issue.. Maybe u wanna check it out? Cost alittle more as compares with stock differential oil..

They actually uses that for all their M rides..

Cheers ~~ :)
