6.9mil population in 2030 / PM Lee admits govt lacked foresight

Re: 6.9mil population in 2030 / PM Lee admits govt lacked foresight

I remember very vividly what Malboro Tan said during the last GE campaign when there were much resentment on the property price rocketing....He said we have a lot of supply in the pipeline vs demand and worried that the price will crash one day if the gov were to built more HDB and offer more land tenders...At that time the price for 99yrs mass market condo is about 800/psf....now its 1200psf!!!!

Basket... I thought it is common sense? Need foresight for this? You bring more people, you make sure you have enough houses for them and infrastructure to support first. Blinded by what ah? Even if "economy would grow brilliantly" is not expected, the bringing in of more people is because they are the one controlling this.

Even chicken rice uncle knows if he intends to sell 1 million plates more, he needs to have enough chicken and rice, enough utensils, enough XMMs to serve customers.

Time to screw the PRCs before they screw you!

I have no qualms with foreigner as long we are attracting real talent..

One of my prc friend is a oil trader.. He says we are just mass importing.. Why? His neighbor in bukit timah is a farmer, they got rich because state govt buy their land and become billionaires.. They just here to buy house.. What can they contribute But ppl with good skillsets are not given residency faster.. Even he find it strange..

Australia goes by a point systems on immigration.. And it s points are tweak every year depending on e economy requirement .. It is open for criticism.. SG is close... Again suka suka set one..

SINGAPORE - At the age of 60, Mr Lee Hsien Loong has held his post for eight years - and would prefer not to stay beyond 10 more years.

And definitely not till he is 80. "I do not see myself as prime minister in 20 years' time," said Mr Lee."I think if I am, something has gone seriously wrong."

During an interview with current affairs website Singapolitics, Mr Lee, who turned 60 in February, was queried about his future plans. Did he see himself continuing as prime minister beyond 70, he was asked.

"I hope not," he replied with nary a pause.

"Seventy is already a long time more. And Singapore needs a prime minister who is younger, who's got that energy, and who is in tune with that very much younger and very much different generation."

People's Action Party leaders have stressed the need for leadership renewal at the highest ranks. Singapore's first two prime ministers stepped down when they were in their 60s.

Mr Lee Kuan Yew was 67 when he made way for Mr Goh Chok Tong in 1990, having served for 31 years. Mr Goh in turn relinquished his position to the current PM at the age of 63, after 14 years at the country's helm.

And just as Mr Goh had started scouring for PM No. 3 even before he took over, Mr Lee Hsien Loong too was looking out for his successor when he took office in 2004.

Barely two weeks after becoming prime minister, he declared in his maiden National Day Rally speech that one of his chief tasks was to launch an early search for Singapore's fourth-generation leader.

Since last year's general election, several new faces have moved to the Frontbench within the year and they have been described as being part of the fourth-generation leadership.

They include Education Minister Heng Swee Keat, Acting Community, Youth and Sports Minister Chan Chun Sing, Acting Manpower Minister Tan Chuan-Jin and Senior Minister of State for Education, and Information, Communications and the Arts Lawrence Wong.

During the interview, when asked if he saw colleagues in the present Cabinet who are prime ministerial potential, Mr Lee chose to keep any assessments to himself. He merely replied with a smile: "I think it's early days to say."

LTK is going to be very upset if he sees this......he then should be the future PM of Sg.

Of cos Svlvia Lim will beg to differ

Hnnor. I said before - PM should've picked Chen as Speaker, which will win over voters while creating a schism in WP... 反间计. But clearly he's no political strategist and never studied Sun Tzu.

Re: 6.9mil population in 2030 / PM Lee admits govt lacked foresight

I never see or hear CSM at all !! Yet people who take his pic on an MRT say he is future PM.

We have damn intelligent voters

Re: 6.9mil population in 2030 / PM Lee admits govt lacked foresight

Dunno man... should an opposition politician be judged solely by his speeches in Parliament? Surely there's a lot more going on behind the scenes, like lobbying ministries etc.

Re: 6.9mil population in 2030 / PM Lee admits govt lacked foresight

But if you are in the business of politics (and it is a business in Singapore to some extent), you can't just do things BTL. People will judge you based on what they see or hear and that is natural for most people and especially so for politicians.

You have to balance both doing and saying that you do. Packaging is important as well to help people decide, unfortunately.

Re: 6.9mil population in 2030 / PM Lee admits govt lacked foresight

Since when did any known politician do things quietly behind the scenes and then get voted?

All must AT LEAST do the obligatory and customary baby carrying.........

True, true. That means either the WP is daft and won't be re-elected, or they're more interested in *gasp* actually serving the people.

As opposed to business-as-usual political wayang

Could be trying to over-compensate the wayang... :p

Someone give them a knock!
