I thought CM7 was already pretty obvious they wanted more PRs to convert to citizen. A couple of my friends are now seriously considering this option.

Most who cannot afford new car will continue to review their coe at 100k and japs car will be in demand. But 7-8 years from now, there will be huge shortage of Jap cars, conti ex to maintain while Korean cars not reliable to drive beyond 10 years. Report saying conti car exceed 50% of car population.

MINISTER Mentor Lee Kuan Yew 'has not quite been sold' on the idea of a 6.5 million population size in Singapore.

Instead, he projects for Singapore an optimum population size of five to 5.5 million for Singapore.

He said on Friday: 'I have not quite been sold on the idea that we should have 6.5 million.'

'I think there's an optimum size for the land that we have, to preserve the open spaces and the sense of comfort.'

MM Lee was speaking at think-tank Institute of Policy Studies's conference 'Scenerios for the Next Generation', which seeks to gaze into the crystal ball and discuss what Singapore will look like come 2030.

Speakers, including Cabinet ministers, academics and journalists, held forth on subjects such as how the economy should evolve, cultural trends, and the Singapore identity.

Over an hour-long dialogue with some 900 participants, MM Lee touched on issues ranging from whether Singapore has the talent pool to sustain a two-party political system, to the widening income divide.

One question, posed by the moderator, diplomat Tommy Koh, was whether Singapore is guilty of overbuilding.

A year ago, the Government had announced that it is making plans to accommodate a population of 6.5 million people - up from the current 4.5 million - in the next 40 to 50 years.

This sparked off worries about overcrowding.

Whatever policies they roll out will keep being changed... in the run-up to 2016 and after it. So I'd take this population thing with a pinch of salt.

In 2007, they were planning for 6.5 mil people in the next 40-50 years.
Now, 6 years later, they are planning for the same figure in 17 years' time.

nb the timeframe from 40-50 years now become 23 years.

This is some scare tactics for various purposes:-

1. Scare you to make you have more babies and enjoy being paid for that;
2. Punish you for not voting them;
3. Change the policy near 2016 and say "WE LISTENED TO YOU, WE ARE ON YOUR SIDE"

I think the population game is easiest or if not the only way for them.. The old guards sees the 30years down e road.. what legacy they build is time..,..The new guards has 0/20 visions.. Or 1mm vision.. They don't look ahead.. Even national issues like transports and cost can be messed up..

They got no bright ideas.. And even if we want to move the economy, it will take time..

Now they see that: Cost is going to go up affecting business if that's supply stops..but they fail to see the other light: Business will relocate anyway.. we just cannot fight the cost war with china,India,Malaysia,Indonesia for some industry...They try to reinvent another economy in recent years which fails.. (Other than the casino)...

We are quite entrenched now, every business (sme, mncs, govt)...that is the poison pills we have been swallowing.. It is not like our govt is freaking rich(yes, u can argue we have reserves..but that will take many many man years to calculate.. According to some "trusted source")..We also lost a lot of investments in recent years.. Without money, it doesn't help..

Since, we pride ourself as running e country as a company....in corporate world, we call it "CEO failure" and poor management... Like HP, Nokia, chesapeake, Avon ..etc.. (Are they brave enough to do a internal clean up? Doubt so, to many internal agenda)

Put it in simple terms... There is nothing for them to gain whichever way they go..

Basket... I thought it is common sense? Need foresight for this? You bring more people, you make sure you have enough houses for them and infrastructure to support first. Blinded by what ah? Even if "economy would grow brilliantly" is not expected, the bringing in of more people is because they are the one controlling this.

Even chicken rice uncle knows if he intends to sell 1 million plates more, he needs to have enough chicken and rice, enough utensils, enough XMMs to serve customers. I think we need more taxi drivers and kopitiam uncles in the parliament if the scholars can get blind-sided by "international events" (like who won the Oscar? Miss Universe?)...
