ACU's E90 San Er Ling i (Photoshoot & MODS Diary)

Re: ACU's E90 San Er Ling i (Photoshoot & MODS Diary)

Second half of the DIY will be the lower part of the grill where it involve on taking apart the fin separated from the chrome 'U' shape border. This is a 'MUST' steps in order to have perfect wrapping results because each fin clip onto the chrome 'U' shape border.

There are 5 clips all together holding the black fin to the chrome 'U' shape. This clips are very fragile and will break if to much force applied. You need to be patient and gentle when doing it.

This is how a perfect wrap results look in close-up where all fin seat nicely over the sticker and another shot on whole piece. Ready to install and role.

Re: ACU's E90 San Er Ling i (Photoshoot & MODS Diary)

I liked to say thank you to Marcus Li aka our Best Automotive Photographer who spoke with me over the phone to share with me his personally experience DIY-ing his own E92 335i interior. Also thanks to Rodney @ R2D on sharing with me using the right plastic removal tools to safely remove those plastic trims panel. Your advice had greatly contribute to my successful of my interior trim DIY. :D

11/10/2009 on a shine hot Sunday, where everyone should be sleeping, sun tanning, shopping, go church, morning drive, etc. but I decided to dive with my passion and with all the best advice and theories I've collected so on this trims DIY, I decided to give it a try to DIY the whole interior trims with that awesome looking 3M Matt CF textured stickers. ;)

Morning preparation: 2 cans of Heineken, a hair dryer, pen knife and a roll of 3M Matt CF textured stickers. and plastic tools, sorry misse that from the photo :woottt:
4004491395_746d9c9f66_b.jpg

3 simple steps to remember,
  1. take out all trims.
  2. wrap it
  3. put it back.

Sound bloody easier, right? It took me 8hrs of hard work labour to complete all 4 door trim, 2 dashboard trim and the whole center piece console. Yes, it's solid 8 hrs +/- 10am-6pm on Sunday. well passion its blind. :woottt:

Cut the crab, here is the DIY dairies as POR. I decided to start out on the easier (I think it is) the rear door trims because its shorter one among all the trims there are 4 reverts that hold the trim to the door panel. see the green arrows. start where the pink arrow is pointing. DO NOT FORCE or PULL. use a plastic tools slowing slot in and push out towards your direction. FEEL it with your tools.
4004346719_9b27afe1c5_b.jpg

with the confident and experience gain from the 1st piece successful taken out, i continue to the follow side then the front set. The front trim go more holding reverts. 6 in total. starts digging where it pink arrow is pointing.
4005333862_f8527d51e2_b.jpg

then the front dashboard panels where air-con blowers are. same start out on the smaller piece which is on the driver side. its hold on to a different reverts designed compares to the door trims panel.

4005151830_e961509c90_b.jpg

the air-con blower its attached to the trim panels and I dare not try to remove it from the trim because its very complicated from the back. so i decided to leave attached and do the magic :chinese:

Re: ACU's E90 San Er Ling i (Photoshoot & MODS Diary)

As I successfully remove all 4 doors and the driver side air-con blower trims. I moved on the next challenge, the longest front dashboard panel trims. this trim had 3 wired connector (see the pink arrows in the picture). the center air-con blower section had 2 wire connector connecting the central-lock, DTC, hazard light button. One more its the Start/Stop button switch above the key hole. as simple as disconnect IDE cable from your computer hardware.;)

4004794005_7d01c0ffd2_b.jpg

Now left the center piece. I dig from the end closer to the arm rest to see if its removal like the rest of pieces. It came off easily than expected and slowing i dig slow towards the gear stick. there i stuck for quite sometime.
4005198156_403b3eeb4d_b.jpg

because there are 2 wires can be seem (see the pink arrow). I don't have a torch with me so I was thinking maybe I'll wrap it on the car. it will be harder but at least the side its expose and the sticker can be conceal nicely underneath.
4004422035_e7e2b31f1c_b.jpg

I'm a bit perfectionist, so I try another 30mins to understand whats the complications of the wires. it turn out to be similar to the wire connector as those on Start/Stop button. I remove the gear stick by putting it on N and pull HARD upwards and this is how the wire connect looks like with the stick off.
4005491110_577d44312d_b.jpg

Wahla, whole center piece came off after 45hrs wrestling on the connector and removing the stick.

after sucessfully remove the whole center piece, it removing the coin box, shifter housing and center holder possible. see picture for removal point. fpr the coin box, just unscrew it with torx tools and slowly work on the clips that hold on to it. DO NOT use force. be gentle and patient.

This round I started out on the center piece as I want to be able to go home if I can't complete it in a day. about 2 hrs spend just on the center pieces as there were many individual pieces all together.
